First find where the sound and picture stop matching: check the original recording in local playback, then make a representative test through the live encoder if you are sending that recording to YouTube Live. Those are different workflows, and the fix depends on where the mismatch first appears. YouTube’s live-stream guidance recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream and monitoring stream health; it does not prescribe a universal sync-offset value for prerecorded ASMR.
First identify which kind of YouTube stream you mean
An ordinary uploaded video
If you uploaded a prerecorded ASMR file as a regular YouTube video, troubleshoot the source file and its playback first. YouTube’s encoder instructions concern live-stream ingestion; they do not establish a repair procedure for an ordinary uploaded video. Compare the file in a local player with how it plays on YouTube to identify where the mismatch begins.
A prerecorded file sent through YouTube Live
If OBS or another encoder is playing a prerecorded file into a YouTube Live event, check the file locally and then run a controlled test through the same live setup. YouTube recommends tests that include audio and movement like those planned for the stream, and advises monitoring stream health and messages during the event. YouTube’s live encoder settings guide is relevant to this workflow.
Locate where the mismatch first appears
- Play the source file locally. Use the same file intended for the stream. Listen for the first clear sound cue and compare it with a visible action, such as a hand entering the frame or an object being tapped.
- Check the encoder output in a test stream. Use the planned playback and encoder setup, and include representative audio and motion. Monitor the event’s stream health and messages while testing.
- Check the viewer playback. Compare what viewers receive with the local file and encoder test. Note the first point at which sound and picture diverge, rather than assuming YouTube caused the problem.
- Record whether the offset stays steady. A consistent lead or lag differs from a mismatch that grows over time. Also note any dropped frames, disconnections, or connection warnings; those point to a parallel delivery issue, not necessarily the cause of a steady sync offset.
These checks narrow down the stage to investigate. The cited official guidance does not document a universal OBS sync-offset setting or a guaranteed fix for this exact prerecorded-ASMR case, so do not apply an arbitrary delay value without verifying the current controls in the encoder you use.

Check audio settings without treating them as a guaranteed fix
For live encoder input, YouTube’s current guide lists a sample rate of 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround sound. These are ingestion recommendations, not a documented cure for audio-picture desynchronization. Match the setting to your audio format and test the stream again with representative content.
Do not confuse stream latency with sync. YouTube defines latency as the delay between capture and presentation to viewers; changing latency does not, by itself, repair the relative timing of sound and picture. YouTube’s latency explanation describes this distinction.

When the stream also drops frames or disconnects
If the test shows dropped frames, disconnections, or unstable delivery, troubleshoot connection health separately from the audio-picture offset. OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign of an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Its connection troubleshooting guide recommends lowering video bitrate to fit stable upload speed and using a wired connection where practical.
- Lower the video bitrate if your stable upload speed cannot sustain the configured rate.
- Use wired networking where practical, then repeat the representative test.
- Reassess audio-picture timing independently. Connection improvements address stability; OBS’s cited guidance does not claim that they fix a steady sync offset.
What HLS latency does—and does not—tell you
YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments. The prescribed segment duration is 1–4 seconds, and shorter segments reduce latency. That is a capture-to-viewer delay consideration, not a documented audio-sync repair; changing segment duration should not be presented as a fix for sound and picture that are out of step.
