To fix audio and video sync issues with MediaPackage in a YouTube live stream, first determine whether sound is actually ahead of or behind the picture—or whether the entire stream is simply arriving late. Then compare audio and video at each available point in the signal chain: encoder output, MediaPackage input and output, YouTube ingest or preview, and viewer playback. Change only the stage where the offset first appears; MediaPackage is a downstream packaging service, not inherently a direct YouTube publisher.

First distinguish sync error from live latency

Describe the symptom precisely: Is audio ahead of the picture, behind it, drifting out of sync over time, or are both tracks merely delayed relative to the live event? An event-to-screen delay is not necessarily an audio/video sync fault. Encoding and decoding, network conditions, and player buffers can all add HLS delivery delay while sound remains aligned with picture. AWS explains HLS delivery terminology and latency sources.

AWS’s 2024 Media & Entertainment blog gives typical ranges of 12–30 seconds for regular HLS and 5–10 seconds for a Low-Latency HLS end-to-end workflow. These are workflow-dependent latency figures, not audio/video sync tolerances or guarantees for a particular stream. See the AWS Media & Entertainment blog.

Map every hop before changing settings

Write down the actual route from capture to viewer: source and encoder or transcoder, MediaPackage input, MediaPackage output, any relay or publishing component, YouTube ingest, and the playback device. AWS describes MediaPackage as receiving an upstream HLS stream and packaging it for downstream playback. YouTube separately documents encoder ingest using RTMP/RTMPS and HLS. The workflow may therefore need a component between MediaPackage and YouTube; do not assume MediaPackage itself publishes directly to YouTube.

AWS’s MediaPackage v2 flow documentation states: “An upstream encoder (such as AWS Elemental MediaLive) sends an HLS live stream using AWS Signature Version 4 to authorize request to your origin and your IAM channel policy.” The exact workflow and supported input details differ by MediaPackage version, so check the documentation for the version you operate: MediaPackage v2 live processing flow and MediaPackage v1 overview.

Locate where the offset first appears

Use a controlled test containing a clear visual transient and a sharp sound—for example, a visible hand clap. Compare recordings or measurements at successive points you can access: encoder output, MediaPackage input and output, YouTube preview, and viewer playback. This is a practical isolation method, not a vendor-validated MediaPackage procedure. Keep the test source and playback conditions consistent, and avoid changing multiple stages at once.

  • Already misaligned at encoder output: investigate capture timing, audio/video input mapping, clocks, and timestamps in the source or encoder.
  • Aligned at MediaPackage input but not output: inspect endpoint and track configuration, then verify the v2 timestamp mode and channel output-locking mode.
  • Aligned in packaged output but not in YouTube preview or playback: examine the component relaying or submitting the stream to YouTube, YouTube ingest health, and the downstream player.
  • Aligned everywhere but late on screen: treat this as a latency investigation rather than applying an audio delay to compensate for delivery time.

Check MediaPackage v2 timestamp behavior carefully

For MediaPackage v2, establish the existing output timestamp mode and output-locking mode before considering a change. The API defines two timestamp behaviors:

Mode Output timestamp behavior
PASSTHROUGH Preserves input presentation timestamps (PTS); this is the default if the mode is omitted.
REBASED_TO_CHANNEL_START Rebases output PTS relative to the channel start.

The timestamp mode is configurable only when output locking is NON_EPOCH_LOCKED, and it becomes immutable after endpoint creation. It is not a universal sync switch: changing it may be unavailable for an existing endpoint and should not be attempted without evidence that the divergence is at the packaging stage. Consult the MediaPackage v2 CreateOriginEndpoint API reference for the configuration constraints.

Account for multiple encoders and failover

If the workflow has redundant encoders, regional paths, or failover, alignment must be considered across encoders as well as within one output. AWS recommends locking video frames as early as possible; timestamp and picture alignment affect failover behavior. AWS describes embedded timecode or local LTC in cross-region workflows. That guidance applies to multi-encoder alignment cases; it does not establish that every single-encoder sync issue needs LTC hardware. See AWS MediaPackage workflow guidance.

Validate the YouTube ingest path

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the protocol and encoding settings actually in use. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Run a test with both audio and moving video, then monitor YouTube stream health and messages during the event. Requirements and recommendations can change, so confirm them in YouTube’s live encoder settings.

If the workflow uses YouTube HLS ingest

Check the HLS-specific requirements rather than applying assumptions from a continuous RTMP feed. YouTube documents TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. Its documentation also says HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP ingest. Switching ingest protocols may affect total delay, but it is not an audio/video sync correction unless measurements show that the protocol path is where the tracks diverge. See YouTube HLS ingest requirements.

Troubleshoot common outcomes

What you observe What to check next
Audio is consistently ahead or behind from the encoder onward Check source capture timing, encoder input mapping, clocks, and timestamps before changing MediaPackage.
Sync is good at input but wrong at packaged output Verify MediaPackage endpoint and track settings; for v2, check timestamp and output-locking modes against the endpoint’s configuration constraints.
Packaged output is aligned but YouTube preview is not Inspect the intervening relay or encoder, protocol-specific ingest settings, and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Only one viewer or device reports a problem Compare another player or device and check player buffering or decoding; a playback-specific issue does not by itself prove the packaged stream is wrong.
Both audio and picture arrive late but remain aligned Investigate end-to-end latency, including encoding/decoding, network conditions, HLS segmenting, and player buffers; do not treat latency alone as sync drift.
Sync changes during encoder failover Check frame locking and timestamp/picture alignment across the encoder outputs and paths.

Or let it run in the cloud

For uploaded recordings that should play continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than a repair for a live camera or a MediaPackage-to-YouTube signal chain. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports whatever quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
