If an app stopped working after a WMI repository rebuild, first identify the WMI namespace, class, or provider it needs, then restore that app’s registration using its own repair or vendor procedure. A rebuild can return WMI to its Windows baseline without restoring every application’s WMI additions. The failure alone does not prove that WMI is corrupt, so avoid resetting the repository again until you have confirmed the cause.

Why an app can fail after a WMI repository rebuild

A WMI repository reset restores the repository to its initial Windows installation state and recompiles MOF files designated for autorecovery. Application-specific classes or providers may not be part of that autorecovery set, so an app can lose a WMI dependency even when Windows WMI itself is available. Microsoft describes what a reset restores in its winmgmt command documentation.

That is one plausible explanation, not a diagnosis. WMI errors can reflect missing classes, provider failures, namespace or access problems, or issues elsewhere in Windows. A successful query for a standard class such as Win32_OperatingSystem only confirms that particular query; it does not establish that an unrelated application provider works. See Microsoft’s WMI troubleshooting guidance.

Diagnose the missing dependency before changing WMI again

  1. Capture the failure. Record the app name and version, Windows edition and build, exact error text or code, when the issue started, and what rebuild or reset command was run. Note whether the problem affects one app or several WMI-backed features. Review the app’s logs and relevant Windows event logs.
  2. Find the WMI dependency named by the error. Look in the app’s logs or vendor documentation for a namespace, class, or provider. If you have a specific dependency, test that one with the app’s documented query or diagnostic. Do not treat a generic WMI query as proof that every provider is healthy.
  3. Check repository consistency only if the symptoms warrant it. Open an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell window and run winmgmt /verifyrepository. This reports whether the repository is consistent. Use the result alongside the app-specific error rather than as a substitute for identifying the dependency.

Microsoft warns: “Under no circumstances should you delete the WMI repository as a first step; because deleting the repository can cause damage to the system or to installed applications.” The warning appears in its WMI troubleshooting documentation.

Choose the right recovery action

Salvage and reset are different operations, and neither is a generic fix for a missing application provider.

Command What it does When it fits
winmgmt /salvagerepository Checks repository consistency and, if inconsistent, rebuilds it while merging readable content. When there is evidence the repository is inconsistent and a salvage is appropriate.
winmgmt /resetrepository Restores the repository to its initial Windows installation state and recompiles MOFs designated for autorecovery. Only when a reset is specifically justified; it may remove application additions not included in autorecovery.

Microsoft documents these behaviors in the winmgmt command reference. Do not run another reset simply because one app reports a WMI error.

Restore the affected app’s provider or MOF

Use the application vendor’s repair, reinstall, or provider-registration instructions for the product and version you have. If the vendor directs you to compile a particular MOF file, mofcomp <file.mof> parses that file and adds its class and instance definitions to WMI. The MOF may be stored in the application’s directory rather than %windir%System32wbem; compile only the app-specific file identified by the vendor, not every MOF you find. Microsoft explains MOF compilation and the autorecover pragma.

A local MOF marked with #pragma autorecover is included in recovery. That mechanism does not retrieve MOFs from a remote computer, and recovery does not support arbitrary mofcomp switches. It is not a guarantee that third-party application classes will return after a reset.

Retest the original feature and handle remaining errors

  • Re-run the app’s original workflow and, if available, its specific WMI query or diagnostic.
  • Check the app and Windows logs for any remaining namespace, class, provider, or access errors.
  • If the provider or MOF is unclear, or compilation reports errors, follow the application vendor’s support procedure. Do not substitute a blanket DLL-registration script or another repository rebuild.

Microsoft notes that failed MOF compilation can leave the repository undefined in its WMI troubleshooting guidance.

Legacy example: a VMM 2012 namespace issue

Microsoft documented a narrowly scoped case in which System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 or 2012 R2 could show a Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2 host as “Needs Attention” after WMI was rebuilt. The documented cause involved the processing order of MOF removal and installation files, which could leave a namespace missing. Microsoft’s resolution for that specific VMM issue recompiles MOFs from %windir%System32Wbem while excluding files containing “uninstall,” then refreshes the host in VMM. This is a legacy, product- and version-specific workaround; do not apply it as a general MOF-rebuild script for other apps or current Windows releases.
