If an older PC game won’t launch on Windows, first check the game publisher or storefront for an update or title-specific fix. Next, try Windows’ Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. For other errors, follow the symptom: a missing DirectX DLL calls for Microsoft’s legacy DirectX guidance, an original-CD prompt may indicate disc copy protection, and a clean boot can test whether background software is interfering. These steps are diagnostic options, not guaranteed fixes for every game.
Start by identifying the game and the failure
Before changing settings, note the game’s exact title and edition, where you installed it from, your Windows version and build, and the complete error message. To check the Windows version, open Start, type winver, and press Enter. A screenshot can help if the message disappears quickly.
Also note whether the game worked before a recent Windows or driver change. These details help distinguish a compatibility problem from a missing component or a title-specific requirement.
Check for a publisher or storefront update
Look up the exact game title and error on the publisher’s official support page. If the game did not come from Microsoft Store, Microsoft recommends checking the publisher’s website for a newer or updated version. For a Store game, check for updates in Microsoft Store. Prefer an official patch or support instruction over an unofficial installer or community patch, which may not match your edition or installation source.
Try Windows’ Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, open the troubleshooter using this path:

- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Follow the prompts for the game, apply the suggested settings, and test whether it launches.
Windows changes to its architecture, security features, or requirements can affect older software, including after an upgrade. The troubleshooter is a reasonable first test, but its suggested settings are not guaranteed to work for every title.
Test compatibility mode carefully
For an older desktop game, compatibility mode may be worth trying if the troubleshooter does not help. Change one setting at a time, launch the game, and note the result. If the change makes things worse, undo it. Microsoft’s compatibility-mode example appears in legacy guidance for app crashes; it does not establish one Windows-version setting as right for every game.

If the error names DirectX or a missing DLL
When an error names DirectX or a file such as d3dx9_35.dll, check the system’s DirectX information by opening Start, typing dxdiag, and running the diagnostic tool. A newer DirectX version on the PC does not necessarily include every legacy DirectX 9 component an older game expects.
For this specific legacy-runtime issue, Microsoft points to the DirectX End-User Runtime and notes that installing it does not replace the system’s newer DirectX version. Follow Microsoft’s guidance for the missing d3dx9 DLL case. Do not download individual DLL files from third-party download aggregators.

If the game asks for the original CD
Some older disc-based games use copy protection that checks for the original game CD in the drive. Copying the game’s files to a hard drive or another storage location does not necessarily remove that check. Microsoft documents this behavior for particular legacy games, not every disc-based title; check your game’s own support instructions. See Microsoft’s article about games that still request a CD-ROM.
If the game requires physical media and your PC has no working optical drive, a USB DVD drive may be a possible way to connect one. Before buying, confirm that the drive supports the disc format and connection you need, and check whether the game’s support page reports copy-protection limitations. A drive may not overcome every compatibility problem.

If the launch or crash is intermittent, test for software conflicts
A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs, which can help determine whether background software is interfering with the game. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions.
If the game behaves differently in a clean boot, restore normal startup and investigate the service or program that may be involved. Clean boot is a diagnostic procedure, not a game fix by itself; do not broadly disable security protections as a workaround.

When to contact the publisher or storefront
If the game still will not launch, contact its publisher or storefront support with the title and edition, Windows build, installation source, exact error, and steps you have tried. Older games can have installation, disc-check, or compatibility requirements that general Windows troubleshooting does not resolve.
