First identify which symptom you have, then test one variable at a time—starting with a single local file in a duplicate scene. Historical user reports describe several different setups and do not establish a universal fix for current OBS releases.
First identify what “crashing” means
Before changing settings, note whether OBS itself exits, only the VLC Video Source stops responding, or the video stops while the source and OBS remain open. Those are different symptoms and may point to different parts of the setup.
- OBS exits: Save the crash report and the OBS log from a reproduction.
- The VLC source freezes: Record whether OBS remains usable and whether changing tracks or restarting the source restores playback.
- Playback stops: Check whether the file reached its end, whether looping is enabled, and whether a playlist advanced as expected.
Also record your operating system, OBS Studio and VLC versions, file formats, whether the source uses local files or a network stream, and whether it loops one file or changes tracks. These details help distinguish a repeatable source or media problem from an issue specific to one playlist or environment.
Reproduce the problem with a controlled test
- Duplicate the scene. Keep the original scene intact so you can compare results and return to your working setup.
- Reduce the test to one source and one file. For a local-media problem, remove other playlist entries in the duplicate scene and test one file. Do not treat this as a substitute for testing a network playlist if that is what fails.
- Run the test for a similar length of time. A problem that occurs only after several hours may not appear in a short test. Note when it starts and what the source and OBS do.
- Observe OBS memory use and save the log. Compare the same observations before and after any change. If OBS closes, retain its crash report too.
- Change one thing at a time. If you swap the source type and re-encode the file simultaneously, you will not know which change affected the result.
Test a local file in OBS Media Source
If the failing media is a local video, try the file in an OBS Media Source in the duplicate scene, rather than the VLC Video Source. Compare whether the file plays, whether the failure returns over a similar runtime, OBS memory use, and any differences in the OBS log or crash report.

A macOS user in a 2019 OBS forum discussion said Media Source looked promising for their video. That is an anecdotal lead, not proof that Media Source is more stable for every file, operating system, playlist, or network stream. It is not a like-for-like replacement when you rely on VLC-specific playlist or network-stream behavior. Read the OBS forum discussion about a VLC Video Source crash.
Check whether one file is responsible
Confirm the file is playable
Try opening the file independently in a media player. If it does not play there, verify that the file is complete and valid before treating OBS as the cause. A 2023 GitHub issue described an immediate crash after an invalid file was added to VLC Video Source and the properties were closed; that reproduction involved macOS 13 and OBS 29.1.3, and differs from a delayed failure after hours. It shows why validating the media is a useful diagnostic step, not that invalid files explain every crash. See the invalid-file crash report.

Compare the original with a re-encoded copy
If one looping file appears to trigger the problem, make a separate re-encoded copy and test it in the same scene under the same playback conditions. Keep the original so you can compare the two. In one 2019 forum case involving a looping file, a user reported that re-encoding appeared to resolve the crash. That individual outcome is not a guaranteed fix. Format alone does not establish the cause. A historical GitHub issue records substantial memory growth during FLV playback on macOS 10.15.4 with OBS 25.0.8. The report is specific to that older setup; it does not show that FLV universally causes crashes or that your problem is a memory leak. See the historical FLV memory-growth report.

If you use a network playlist
Keep a network playlist test separate from a local-file test. One 2020 forum report described a YouTube playlist received as a VLC network stream freezing after about an hour and requiring the source to be replaced. That case does not establish how all network protocols behave, nor does it provide a confirmed fix for local media. Read the network-playlist freeze report.
- Record the exact network source and whether OBS itself remains responsive.
- Test a local file as a control, but do not assume that a result with local media explains the network stream.
- Note whether playback resumes after replacing or restarting the source, and capture the log around the failure.
What historical reports do—and do not—show
OBS forum reports from 2019 and 2020 and GitHub issues concerning OBS 25.0.8 and OBS 29.1.3 describe failures in particular media and platform setups. They support checking the source type, file validity, format, and memory behavior; they do not establish a current release-wide defect or justify a universal version upgrade, VLC downgrade, driver update, or hardware purchase.
