If your iPhone won’t charge, start with the outlet, cable, and adapter, then check the charging port and the phone’s temperature or charging settings. A liquid-detection alert is different: unplug the cable and let the connector and accessories dry before trying wired charging again.
1. Check the outlet and every connection
Plug the charger directly into a wall outlet, then make sure the cable is firmly connected to the iPhone, power adapter, and outlet. Try another outlet if there is no response. Apple also lists a computer or other power accessory as possible power sources; its troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for firm connections. Apple’s charging troubleshooting steps.
2. Inspect the cable and test a known-good one
Check the cable and its connectors for fraying, breaks, bent parts, or heat damage. Apple says not to use damaged accessories. Swap in a cable and charger that you know work; changing one item at a time can help identify which part is faulty.
- For iPhone 14 and earlier, the usual wired connection is USB-C-to-Lightning.
- For iPhone 15 and later, use a USB-C cable.
Connector type alone does not establish that an accessory is compatible or undamaged, so test with a known-good cable and adapter.

3. Try a compatible wall adapter
iPhone can charge with an Apple USB power adapter or another compatible adapter. If you are troubleshooting, connect the phone to a compatible wall adapter rather than relying on an unfamiliar power source. Apple names a 20W USB-C adapter as its reference adapter for MagSafe charging; that recommendation is specifically for MagSafe, not a claim that every wired charging problem requires a 20W adapter. 4. Restart the iPhone
Restart the phone, reconnect the charger, and see whether the battery indicator changes. If the iPhone will not turn on or shows only a battery icon, use the force-restart sequence for your particular model in Apple’s charging support article. Button sequences vary by model, so follow the instructions for your device rather than trying a sequence at random.

5. Check for debris in the charging port
Look for visible lint or debris in the bottom charging port. If you see an obstruction, remove it carefully, then reconnect the cable firmly without forcing it. Apple recommends checking for debris and ensuring a firm connection; cleaning is not guaranteed to resolve every charging fault.
6. Stop wired charging if you see a liquid alert
If the screen displays “Liquid Detected” or “Charging Not Available,” disconnect the cable. Charging while the connector is wet can corrode its pins and cause permanent damage. Let the iPhone connector, cable ends, and any accessory dry before reconnecting. Do not treat the alert as an ordinary cable problem or keep retrying wired charging while moisture may be present. If wired charging is unavailable while the connector dries, a dry Qi-certified wireless charger can be used as an alternative. Keep the phone and wireless charger dry as well.
7. Check temperature and charging settings if it stops near 80%
An iPhone can pause charging above 80% if it becomes too warm. Move it to a cooler place and allow it to cool; charging can resume when the temperature returns to an acceptable range. Charging behavior can also be affected by battery settings:

- Optimized Battery Charging may delay charging beyond 80% in some circumstances.
- Charge Limit is available on iPhone 15 and later and may be set to stop charging at a chosen level.
So an apparent 80% ceiling does not necessarily mean the cable or battery has failed. Check the iPhone’s Battery settings for the options available on your model. Apple describes these charging behaviors in its battery charging guidance.

MagSafe and Qi-certified wireless chargers offer another way to charge a compatible iPhone. If wireless charging works but wired charging does not, that is a useful clue that the issue may be with the cable, adapter, or wired port; it does not by itself identify the exact fault. If the phone still will not charge after these checks, the port is visibly damaged, or a liquid alert returns every time you connect a cable, contact Apple Support, an Apple Store, or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. For an unsupported-accessory alert, Apple recommends connecting directly, checking and clearing debris, restarting, trying another cable or charger, and installing the latest iOS; see Apple’s troubleshooting guidance.
