Then follow the video through the stream mapping, any filtergraph, the video encoder, and YouTube’s ingest preview. Audio working only confirms that an audio path is reaching the stream; it does not confirm that video is being captured or sent.
Trace where the video disappears
Use FFmpeg’s startup log and YouTube’s live preview to locate the break before changing settings at random. Run your existing command with its normal inputs, then inspect the log from the beginning. Keep the stream key private if you share any part of the command.
- Input: Does the intended input list a
Video:stream? - Mapping: Does the
Stream mapping:section route that input video to an output video stream? - Filtering and encoding: If video is mapped, does the filtergraph produce output and does the chosen encoder initialize?
- Ingest: Does YouTube’s live preview show moving video?
The first stage that fails points to the next check. YouTube cannot create source video that FFmpeg did not send.
Check whether FFmpeg sees video in the input
In the log’s Input #... sections, find the entry for the source you expect to provide video. It should list a Video: stream as well as any audio stream. If the intended input lists audio but no video, changing YouTube’s settings or output mapping will not restore a video stream that FFmpeg never received.

Investigate the source selection, capture-device choice, input format, and input options. Capture devices support particular formats, and the way to list or select those formats depends on the device and operating system; check the relevant FFmpeg device documentation rather than assuming one set of options applies everywhere. Verify the output mapping
Read the Stream mapping: lines in the log. Confirm that the video stream from the intended input is mapped to the output. FFmpeg selects streams automatically when no -map option is supplied. Once you specify -map for an output, you control its stream selection manually; an audio-only mapping, wrong input index, or incorrect stream selector can leave audio working while video is excluded. Use those selectors only if they match your actual input listings. Input numbers and stream indices vary by command. If video and audio come from the same input, the appropriate selectors will differ.
Follow video through any filtergraph
If your command uses -filter_complex, check that the graph produces a video output and that the output label is mapped. For a graph whose video output is labeled outv, that might include:
-map "[outv]"
Do not add that option blindly: the label must exist in your graph, and the graph’s input selectors must match the probed inputs. FFmpeg gives unlabeled complex-filter outputs special handling, so inspect the graph and the log rather than assuming that every output needs the same mapping.

Investigate the video encoder and output format
If the log shows video mapped to the output but video still fails, look for encoder initialization errors and check the selected video encoder, FFmpeg build, dimensions, frame rate, and pixel format. An encoder may be unavailable in a particular build or may not accept the input’s format. FFmpeg’s encoder documentation lists encoder options and supported formats; the required conversion depends on the actual input and encoder. FFmpeg codec and encoder documentation
Do not treat -c:v copy as a universal fix. Stream copy does not decode and re-encode the video, so it cannot perform a filter-based pixel-format conversion. If the encoder requires a different format, diagnose the specific compatibility error before choosing a conversion or changing the encoding path.
Confirm video at YouTube’s ingest
Once FFmpeg is sending video, check the live preview in YouTube’s live control room before starting a public broadcast. Test with representative audio and visible movement. YouTube’s encoder guidance says: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the ingest settings that apply to your stream. If the ingest preview has sound but no moving picture, return to FFmpeg’s mapping and video-encoder output; transcoding for viewers cannot supply video missing from the incoming stream.

Changing ingest protocol is not a general remedy for missing or unmapped video. YouTube documents HLS as an ingest option for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support; HLS has its own format and encoder requirements and higher latency. Consider it only when the codec or content calls for it, not as a substitute for fixing the input, mapping, or encoder. YouTube live encoder settings and ingest guidance

What to include when asking for help
The exact correction depends on the command, inputs, FFmpeg build, and error. If you ask for troubleshooting, share:
- The full command with the YouTube stream key and any other credentials removed.
- Your FFmpeg version and build information.
- The relevant
Input #...stream listings andStream mapping:lines. - Any video encoder or filtergraph errors from the log.
- Whether YouTube’s preview shows a still image, a black frame, or no video at all.
