There is no single FFmpeg flag that fixes every stream that stops after its first playlist video. First identify what the command is reading: an FFmpeg concat-demuxer script, an HLS manifest, or a YouTube playlist downloaded by yt-dlp and piped into FFmpeg. Then check whether the process exits, the input stops advancing, or video simply disappears at the transition.
Identify which playlist your command uses
Start with the complete shell command, especially the input after each -i, and capture the log lines around the transition. These workflows are different and need different checks:
- Local concat list: FFmpeg reads a text script listing media files, usually with
-f concat. - HLS: FFmpeg reads an
.m3u8manifest, or produces HLS segments for upload. A manifest is not a concat script. - yt-dlp pipe: yt-dlp downloads or processes playlist entries and sends media through standard output to FFmpeg. Check whether yt-dlp advances and whether the pipe stays open.
Note whether FFmpeg exits at the transition or remains running without producing video. That distinction, plus the full command and transition logs, is needed to identify the specific failure; the title alone does not establish a root cause.
If FFmpeg reads a concat-demuxer script
Check the list format and input path
A basic concat-demuxer script looks like this:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'video-01.mp4'
file 'video-02.mp4'
If relying on automatic format detection, the header must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 on the first line. Check that the second file is actually listed, that relative paths resolve from the expected working directory, and that the FFmpeg command points to this script. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters correctly. The FFmpeg formats manual documents the concat demuxer syntax and its sequencing behavior.

Compare the media streams before using stream copy
Inspect the first and second files with ffprobe or FFmpeg input logs. Compare stream count, codecs, time bases, dimensions, sample rate, channel layout, and other relevant parameters. FFmpeg’s concat-demuxer documentation states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” If the files differ, a clean transition with -c copy is not assured: stream copy passes encoded packets through rather than normalizing incompatible media.
If the files are incompatible, prepare them with common stream properties or consider the concat filter. The demuxer is appropriate for compatible inputs and stream-copy workflows. The filter works on decoded media and can support processing or normalization, but may require re-encoding, which takes compute and can change quality. FFmpeg explains the distinction in its FAQ on joining video files.

Verify durations and transition timestamps
The concat demuxer uses each file’s duration to place the next file’s timestamps and adjusts timestamps globally. Incorrect or unavailable duration metadata can cause artifacts or timing trouble at a boundary; differing stream lengths can also create gaps. If you know a file’s actual duration, the script’s duration directive can override the stored duration. Verify the value from the media or a reliable probe rather than guessing. See the FFmpeg formats manual for duration and timestamp behavior.
If yt-dlp feeds FFmpeg
In this workflow, yt-dlp and FFmpeg have separate jobs: determine whether the downloader advances to the next playlist entry and whether its output pipe remains open before changing FFmpeg output settings. yt-dlp documents playlist processing and standard-output piping in its usage documentation and embedding and piping guidance.

- Capture yt-dlp’s progress output and check whether it reports moving to the next entry.
- Test the downloader output independently to see whether the next item is reached.
- Test the downstream FFmpeg command separately, then inspect where the combined pipeline stops.
- Confirm which program is responsible for iterating over playlist entries. A pipe handling one media item does not, by itself, establish that the downloader or another part of the workflow will advance through a playlist.
Do not add arbitrary retry flags without the error output: first locate whether the failure is in playlist iteration, the pipe, or FFmpeg’s handling of the media.
If the input is an HLS manifest
Do not put concat-demuxer script syntax into an HLS manifest or treat the two formats as interchangeable. Establish whether FFmpeg is reading a source HLS playlist or creating segments for a live upload. YouTube’s HLS live-ingestion guide describes requirements for uploaded media playlists and segments; those publishing requirements do not, on their own, explain a local concat-list failure.

What to include when asking for a specific fix
A useful diagnosis needs the command, the relevant input format and files, and evidence from the transition. Share:
- The complete command line, with credentials and stream keys removed.
- The playlist script or a short redacted excerpt, if the input is a concat list.
- The FFmpeg and, where relevant, yt-dlp version.
- Probe details for the first two media files, including streams and durations.
- Log output from just before and after the transition, and whether FFmpeg exits or remains running.
Without those details, a specific corrected command would be a guess. A community report describing a broadcast stopping at transitions illustrates the symptom, but does not establish a general FFmpeg defect or a universal cause.
