If your FFmpeg stream drops when Indian broadband fails, first find out whether the source/encoder failed or the outbound internet path did. FFmpeg retry flags may help with supported protocol operations, but they cannot restore a live publishing session reliably in every outage—and no software setting can send video while your internet connection is down. Check FFmpeg’s output, a local recording, CPU load and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health before changing settings.
Diagnose which part of the stream failed
Separate three possible failure layers: the video source or encoder, YouTube’s ingest connection, and the broadband route from your location to the internet. A dropped YouTube stream does not by itself identify which layer failed.
- Record the failure. Note the time, FFmpeg version and build, the relevant end of FFmpeg’s error output, and whether FFmpeg exited or remained running. Redact the YouTube stream key from commands, logs and screenshots before sharing them.
- Check the source and local output. If you are archiving the stream locally, inspect the recording around the interruption. A healthy local recording suggests the source and encoding may have continued even if YouTube stopped receiving the feed.
- Check the encoder and system. Look for encoder errors and unusually high CPU load. YouTube recommends checking the encoder, CPU load, dashboard errors and a local archive.
- Read YouTube’s stream-health messages. Open the stream in Live Control Room and note the specific error or health warning. Compare its timing with FFmpeg’s output and any local recording.
- Test the outbound connection. If the encoder appears healthy but the feed is not reaching YouTube, test the internet connection. YouTube’s guidance says, “If you find issues with your Internet connection, contact your Internet service provider to troubleshoot.” YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide describes connection checks.
A failed outbound connection test alongside a healthy local encode points toward the connection or ISP path, rather than an encoder setting. No India-specific broadband outage statistic or recovery time is established here, so the cause and duration of an individual outage must be diagnosed locally.

FFmpeg documents protocol-level options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries and reconnect_delay_total_max. Their availability and effect depend on the protocol and the installed FFmpeg build. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and the help for your actual build.

Do not assume that an option documented for reopening or retrieving a network resource will automatically resume an RTMP live output after broadband drops. Distinguish reconnecting an input from reconnecting the publishing output. Check which protocol operation is failing and whether that protocol supports the option; a flag that applies to the input does not repair a failed output connection.
If FFmpeg exits, a process supervisor or restart script can relaunch it, but that is a separate recovery strategy—not a guarantee that YouTube will resume the same live session cleanly. Test the behavior before relying on it, and avoid launching duplicate or competing publishing sessions when the previous one may still be active.

Choose a bitrate for the connection you actually have
Use measured, sustained upload capacity rather than a nominal broadband plan speed. YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate and running a preflight with representative movement and audio, then monitoring stream health. Its encoder recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate; for H.264, the current table accessed 2026-10-03 lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p60, and 3 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for 1080p30. These are encoder-setting recommendations, not measurements of Indian ISP performance or guarantees of connection stability.
YouTube’s guidance is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Use its encoder settings and bitrate recommendations to select settings for your codec and output format.

- Test a representative stream at the resolution, frame rate, codec and audio settings you intend to use.
- Choose a bitrate that your sustained upload can support, and leave practical headroom for variation and other household traffic. YouTube does not publish a fixed headroom margin for this scenario.
- Monitor stream health during the test. Lowering bitrate may ease congestion or an under-capacity link; it will not fix an ISP outage that removes the connection altogether.
Understand YouTube’s backup ingest option
YouTube’s Live Streaming API provides primary and backup ingest addresses for supported ingest protocols, and permits sending the same content to the backup address. This adds a destination option at YouTube’s ingest end; it is not a second internet connection. If the broadband path from your encoder is down, it cannot carry the feed to either address. For failover to work properly, YouTube requires the primary and backup streams to use matching settings, including resolution, video and audio codecs, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency and audio parameters. YouTube states, “Your primary and backup streams must have the exact same settings for failover to work properly.” The YouTube live-stream error guidance explains this requirement. A matched backup ingest can address an ingest-path problem; it cannot compensate for a broadband outage on the encoder’s side.

When a second internet path may help
If diagnosis shows the primary ISP route is the failure point, a genuinely separate internet service may keep publishing possible when the primary route fails. Whether it will help depends on local coverage, power, data allowance and whether the alternate provider shares infrastructure with the primary route. Those conditions are location-specific, so verify them before relying on a mobile-data or other alternate connection. This is a connectivity principle, not a recommendation for a particular provider or device.
