If that stops the dropouts, replace the suspect cable; if not, test another port or device. A link light alone does not confirm that a cable or connector is working reliably.
Reseat the Ethernet plugs and check for damage
- Unplug the cable from the computer or other device and from the router, switch, or wall jack.
- Inspect both plugs and jacks for a broken retaining latch, bent or missing contacts, debris, or visible damage.
- Reconnect each end until the plug is fully seated and its latch holds. Cisco’s Catalyst port-flap guidance likewise recommends removing and reinserting the connector to ensure it is fully seated: Troubleshoot Port Flaps on Catalyst 9000 Switches.
If a latch is broken or a jack is visibly damaged, the connection may not stay secure. Do not force a damaged plug into the jack.
Swap in a known-good Ethernet cable
Temporarily replace the cable with one that you know works. Keep the same devices and ports so the cable is the main change. If the dropouts stop, retire the suspect patch cable rather than relying on a damaged or poorly terminated connector. Cisco recommends cable substitution when investigating link flaps, and Fluke describes poor RJ45 plug termination as one possible patch-cord fault: Cisco’s Catalyst guidance and Fluke Networks’ patch-cord testing overview.
A replacement cable is a useful isolation test, not a guaranteed fix for a faulty device port or wall jack. Choose a patch cable appropriate for your existing connection; a Cat 6 cable is one common replacement option.

Use the result to locate the fault
- The known-good cable works: The original cable or its termination is the likely cause. Replace it.
- The problem stays on one port: Try another device port or endpoint if available. If the dropout follows a particular port, that port, jack, or connected device may need attention.
- The problem persists across cables and ports: The cause may be elsewhere in the endpoint or network equipment. If you use a managed switch, an administrator can review link events and interface counters; supported equipment may also offer copper cable diagnostics.
Cisco’s Catalyst 9000 guidance covers these checks for applicable managed switches. Its platform-specific diagnostic commands are not universal and should not be run on unrelated home routers or devices.
Understand what a link light or cable tester can tell you
A link indicator reports link state; it does not certify the cable’s performance. A marginal cable can establish a link yet still cause errors or repeated link loss.

A basic continuity tester can reveal some broken conductors, but a simple one-to-one wire map may miss split pairs. Fluke explains that split-pair faults can be difficult to identify and can impair reliable communication. If you test cables regularly, look for a wire-map tester that explicitly detects split pairs: Fluke Networks on split-pair faults.
Which troubleshooting step should you choose?

When to get help
Contact the device or network provider, an administrator, or a qualified technician if the jack is damaged, the fault consistently follows one port, or substituting a known-good cable does not isolate the cause. On a managed switch, share the affected port and the times of the dropouts so an administrator can check relevant link events and counters.
