If your .eth name stopped resolving after an ENS upgrade, first check the network and the resolver currently assigned to the name. ENSv2 can replace an older Public Resolver with PublicResolverV2, while leaving address, text, avatar, or other records needing a separate copy. Restore those records in the resolver the name actually uses, then test both forward and reverse resolution from more than one client.
What changed when the ENS name stopped resolving?
An ENS name does not contain its address and profile information by itself. The name points to a resolver contract, and applications query that resolver for records such as an Ethereum address, text fields, an avatar, a content hash, or other service data. The resolver assigned to the name is therefore the contract that applications must query and the contract that authorized record writes must target.
After an ENSv2 migration, a name can point somewhere different from the resolver expected by an older wallet or decentralized application. A known Public Resolver may be replaced with PublicResolverV2. In other migrations, the v1 resolver can be cleared and a resolver supplied in the migration data. Migration of the resolver pointer does not necessarily copy every record automatically, so the name can appear to exist while returning no address, an old address, or incomplete profile data.
There are two separate failure domains:
- Protocol state: the name, resolver assignment, and records stored on-chain.
- Client state: the wallet, dapp, ENS library, selected network, or cached resolver address used to read that on-chain state.
A client can fail even when the name is correct on-chain. An ENS library that predates ENSv2, or an integration that assumes all names share one resolver address, may query the wrong contract. Conversely, a modern client can expose a real on-chain problem such as a cleared resolver or missing records.

Before changing anything: establish the correct chain and account
Use the chain where the name is registered
Connect the account that manages the name and select the network where the name and its records are registered. Record that chain before making changes. A wallet or dapp querying another network can show an unresolved result even though the name resolves correctly on the registration chain.
Do not switch networks merely because an application defaults to a particular chain. Read the chain shown by ENS Manager or your ENS-aware lookup, and make the repair there. If you manage records on a supported network but test from a client connected elsewhere, you are comparing different contract state.
Use the account with management authority
The account that can edit records may be the owner, a manager, or an authorized account, depending on how the name is configured. Connect that account to ENS Manager before attempting a resolver or record change. A read-only wallet can still inspect a problem, but it cannot complete the repair.

Repair the name step by step
1. Inspect the resolver actually assigned to the name
Open ENS Manager, the official interface for names using a supported Public Resolver, or another ENS-aware lookup that displays the resolver assignment. Read the resolver currently attached to the name; do not substitute an address copied from an older integration, a bookmark, or an earlier transaction.
Write down the resolver address and chain shown by the interface. This is the address your applications should query now. It is also the contract that authorized record writes must use. If a wallet or dapp displays a different resolver, treat that difference as a client or cache problem until the on-chain assignment is verified.
2. Check whether ENSv2 migration replaced or cleared the resolver
Compare the current assignment with the resolver used before the upgrade. ENSv2 migration can replace a known Public Resolver with PublicResolverV2. For some migrated names, the v1 resolver is cleared and a resolver supplied in the migration data becomes authoritative. Either case can make an integration built around the old address return an empty result.

A changed resolver is not automatically an error. The important question is whether the name now points to the intended resolver and whether the required records exist there. Do not reset a valid v2 assignment just because it differs from an address stored in application code.
3. Confirm that the resolver supports the records you need
List the records that must work after the upgrade:
- the cryptocurrency address used for forward resolution;
- text records such as email, URL, description, or social-profile fields;
- avatar data;
- content-hash data for decentralized websites;
- any additional coin addresses or service-specific records your applications use.
Read each required record from the resolver currently assigned to the name. An empty field in the new resolver is different from a failed lookup: the first means the record is absent, while the second may indicate the client is querying the wrong chain or contract.
4. Copy or recreate the records in the current resolver
If the resolver changed and the required records are missing, copy or recreate them through ENS Manager or the supported write path for that resolver. Enter the values exactly as intended, especially hexadecimal addresses, content hashes, and case-sensitive text used by third-party services.
Resolver assignment and record updates are separate operations. A successful migration transaction may have changed which contract is authoritative without copying every address, text, avatar, or content-hash value. Do not assume that seeing the new resolver means the old records followed it.

Submit the write transaction from the account that manages the name. Wait for the transaction to confirm on the same chain selected in step one. If the interface offers several pending writes, allow each one to confirm before starting another; otherwise you may test an intermediate state or misread a pending transaction as a failed repair.
5. Test forward resolution
Forward resolution is the name-to-address direction. Resolve the .eth name in ENS Manager and in an independent ENS-aware client, then compare the returned address with the address record you restored. Also check the specific text, avatar, content-hash, or coin records your application needs.
If ENS Manager returns the expected values but one wallet or dapp does not, the on-chain repair is probably complete. Compare the failing client’s network, ENS library version, and cached resolver data with the working client. A client that still uses a pre-ENSv2 assumption may need an update from its publisher rather than another change to your name.

6. Test reverse resolution and primary-name display
Reverse resolution runs in the opposite direction: it maps an address to a name. Wallets and dapps often use it to display a primary name beside an address. A reverse record alone is not sufficient. The returned name must forward-resolve to the same address before an application should display it as the primary name.
To test this, ask an ENS-aware client for the reverse name associated with the address, then forward-resolve that returned name. If the forward result differs from the original address, the client should reject the primary-name display. This check prevents a stale, mistyped, or incorrectly configured reverse record from being presented as an identity.
7. Collect evidence before escalating
If the name fails across independent clients after the resolver and records are correct, collect the following information:
- the exact ENS name;
- the chain selected during the test;
- the resolver address currently assigned on-chain;
- the record values that are missing or incorrect;
- transaction hashes for the resolver or record updates;
- the wallet or dapp versions that fail and the clients that succeed;
- the time of the latest test.
Provide this public evidence to ENS support or the affected application’s support channel. Never include a seed phrase, private key, wallet password, signing request that you do not understand, or any other secret.
Old resolver versus upgraded resolver
The following distinctions help identify whether the failure is a migration-state problem or an application-compatibility problem.

Protocol state versus client state
Use a working-client comparison before changing on-chain data again. If one independent ENS-aware client resolves the name and another does not, the discrepancy is usually outside the name itself.

Why a wallet or dapp can fail independently
Applications do not all resolve names in the same way. A wallet may bundle an ENS library that predates ENSv2. A dapp may have assumed that every name used one shared resolver address, rather than discovering the resolver assigned to each name. Another client may cache a resolver address for a period of time and continue querying it after migration.

These assumptions produce several misleading symptoms:
- the name is shown as unresolved even though ENS Manager returns an address;
- an old address appears after you changed the record;
- text or avatar data is blank while the address works;
- an edit appears to succeed in an interface but has no effect because the transaction targeted an obsolete resolver;
- reverse resolution works, but the client refuses to show a primary name because its forward check fails.
Do not “repair” a client-only failure by repeatedly changing the resolver. First prove the current assignment and records with an independent read. Then report the failing application, its version, selected chain, observed resolver address, and transaction or lookup details to its maintainers.

Forward resolution: name to address
Forward resolution answers, “Which address does this ENS name designate?” The client reads the address record from the resolver assigned to the name. This is the check needed when a payment screen, profile, or dapp cannot find the expected account from a .eth name.
Verify the exact chain and resolver first, then compare the returned address character by character with the intended value. For applications that use non-Ethereum records, test those coin-specific records separately; a correct Ethereum address does not prove that every other record survived migration.
Reverse resolution: address to name
Reverse resolution answers, “Which ENS name is associated with this address?” A reverse record can point to a name that is misspelled, expired, no longer controlled, or no longer forward-resolves to the same address. That is why a client must perform the forward confirmation before displaying the result as a primary name.
When diagnosing a display problem, record both values: the address used for the reverse lookup and the name returned. Then forward-resolve that name on the same chain. A mismatch identifies a record-consistency issue, not merely a missing user-interface label.

The name is unresolved everywhere immediately after migration
Check the chain and read the resolver assignment. If the resolver is empty, points to an unintended contract, or the migration transaction is not confirmed, correct that state through the supported ENS Manager workflow. If the resolver is correct, inspect whether the address record was copied into it.

The address works, but the avatar, text, or website does not
Read each missing record individually from the current resolver. Recreate only the missing values, confirm the write transaction, and test again. Do not infer that a successful address lookup proves that profile and content records exist.
An old address keeps appearing
Compare the old result with the current on-chain address record. If the chain has the new value, the application is likely using cached data, the wrong network, or an outdated resolver address. Refresh the client, select the recorded chain, and report the stale result if it persists.
Record updates do not change what applications read
Inspect the transaction destination and the resolver assigned at the time of the write. A write sent to the former resolver can confirm on-chain while leaving the active resolver unchanged. Repeat the update through ENS Manager or the supported write path that targets the currently assigned resolver.

Forward-resolve the returned name. If it does not return the same address, the wallet is correctly refusing to treat the reverse result as a verified primary name. Correct the forward address record or the reverse record, then test both directions again.
Verification checklist after the repair
Use this checklist only after every relevant transaction has confirmed:
- The wallet is connected with the account that manages the name.
- The selected chain is the chain where the name and records are registered.
- ENS Manager shows the resolver currently assigned to the name.
- The assigned resolver is the intended resolver, whether it is a Public Resolver,
PublicResolverV2, or a resolver supplied by migration data. - The address record exists in that resolver and matches the intended address.
- Required text, avatar, content-hash, and other records exist in that same resolver.
- Forward resolution returns the expected values in ENS Manager.
- An independent ENS-aware client returns the same forward values.
- Reverse resolution returns the expected name for the address.
- Forward resolution of that reverse name returns the original address.
- Any failing wallet or dapp has been tested for network selection, ENS library age, and cached resolver data.
When the problem is not safe to fix by guessing
Resolver changes and record writes alter on-chain configuration. If you cannot identify the managing account, cannot determine which chain contains the name, or cannot tell whether an interface is targeting the assigned resolver, stop before signing another transaction. Use read-only inspection to establish the current state and obtain help with the public evidence listed above.
Likewise, do not approve an unfamiliar contract call merely because it is labeled as a migration or recovery operation. The repair should be understandable: you should know which name is being changed, which resolver is being assigned or written to, which records are being set, and which account is authorizing the transaction.
What a complete fix looks like
A complete repair has three independent confirmations. First, the name points on-chain to the intended current resolver. Second, the records required by your applications have been copied or recreated in that resolver. Third, forward and reverse tests agree from the correct chain, while at least one independent client confirms the result. If those conditions hold and one wallet or dapp still fails, the remaining issue is client compatibility or caching rather than an unresolved ENS record.
