Then check the tip and charge, test in another app, and reconnect the Pencil if it has stopped responding. These checks help separate an app-specific glitch from a pairing, iPad, or Pencil problem before you consider service.
1. Confirm your Apple Pencil and iPad are compatible
Identify the exact Apple Pencil and iPad models before troubleshooting. Pairing and charging methods differ between Pencil models, and a model that is not compatible with your iPad will not work properly. Use Apple’s current Apple Pencil compatibility and pairing guidance to check your precise iPad model rather than relying on the Pencil generation name alone.
One specific pairing requirement: Apple Pencil (1st generation) needs a USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter and a compatible cable to pair with iPad (10th generation). Follow Apple’s model-specific instructions for your setup.
2. Check the tip and battery
Make sure the tip is secure and in good condition
Check that the Pencil tip is firmly attached. A loose or worn tip can contribute to delayed input, missed strokes, or unexpected lines, according to Goodnotes Support’s troubleshooting guidance. If the tip is visibly worn or damaged, replace it with a tip compatible with your exact Pencil model. Apple notes that a Pencil tip wears down with use and should be replaced to help avoid damaging the iPad screen (Apple’s safety and handling guidance). A replacement tip is not a guaranteed fix if skipping continues.

Check whether the Pencil needs charging
If the Pencil is unresponsive or working intermittently, check its battery. For Apple Pencil (USB-C), Apple documents checking the battery in the Batteries widget or in Settings; it charges through a compatible iPad’s USB-C connector or with a USB-C cable and power adapter. See the iPad User Guide’s Apple Pencil charging instructions. For other Pencil models, use the charging method specified for that model in Apple’s pairing guidance.
3. Find out whether one app is causing the uneven lines
Try writing a few lines in Apple Notes, Freeform, or another app that supports Apple Pencil. If the Pencil works normally elsewhere, focus on the app where the issue occurs: check its settings and install available updates. For Goodnotes specifically, its support team suggests turning off Accessibility Zoom as a diagnostic step; see Goodnotes’ troubleshooting steps.

If the same skips or missed strokes occur across multiple apps, the problem is less likely to be limited to one app. Continue with the connection checks below; if the issue persists, contact Apple Support for device-level help.
4. Reconnect an Apple Pencil that has stopped responding
Use the connection method for your particular Pencil model. Apple’s general pairing troubleshooting sequence is:

- Connect the Pencil to the iPad as directed for its model, and leave it connected.
- Restart the iPad while the Pencil remains connected.
- Check that Bluetooth is turned on in Settings.
- If the Pencil appears in Settings > Bluetooth, tap its information button and choose Forget This Device.
- Reconnect the Pencil using its model-specific method, then tap Pair when the option appears.
If Pair does not appear, leave the Pencil connected for one minute so it can charge, then try again. For Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (2nd generation), remove the iPad case or cover and retry pairing. Apple lists these steps and advises that service may be needed if the Pair button still does not appear after troubleshooting; see Apple’s pairing instructions.

Seek Apple Support if skipping continues across apps after you have checked the tip and charge and restarted the iPad. If the Pencil will not pair and Apple’s steps do not make the Pair button appear, Apple says service may be needed. Avoid buying a replacement Pencil based on symptoms alone; these checks do not establish that the Pencil itself is faulty.
