If the AirTag appears in Find My but its location is not updating, check the timestamp and status: Find My may be showing the last known location rather than a current one.
First determine whether pairing failed or the location is stale
Open Find My and select Items. If the AirTag is missing there or setup never finished, use the connection checks below. If it appears but the map has not changed, note the location timestamp and any status message before troubleshooting.
Apple explains that an item’s location updates when it connects to the Find My network. If Find My cannot locate it, the app shows where and when it was last located. Turn on Notify When Found if that option is available, and allow Find My notifications so you can be alerted if the item is detected again. See Apple’s explanation of Find My location statuses.
Check the iPhone or iPad before resetting the AirTag
Pairing depends on the Apple device’s software, connectivity, location permissions, account setup, and Find My settings. Work through these checks, then try adding the tag again.

- Update iOS or iPadOS. Apple’s September 15, 2026 setup guide says first-generation AirTag setup requires iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later; AirTag (2nd generation) requires iOS or iPadOS 26.2.1 or later. Check Apple’s current AirTag setup requirements because minimum versions can change.
- Turn on Bluetooth and Location Services. In Settings, open Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure Location Services is on. Find My needs location access; enable Precise Location for the most accurate location.
- Check Apple Account setup and sync. Finish setting up your Apple Account if prompted. If iCloud sync has paused and your device asks you to resume it, do so.
- Check Find My settings. Make sure the Find My network and iCloud Keychain are enabled.
- Confirm internet access. Connect to a strong Wi-Fi or mobile data network, then restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Retry the setup animation if it disappeared. Put the device to sleep and wake it, unlock it, and wait 15 seconds for the animation to reappear. Keep only one unpaired AirTag close to the device while adding multiple tags.
Apple says Find My can contain up to 32 items, counting shared items and accessories as well as certain AirPods according to their device-specific item counts. If you have reached that limit, remove an item you no longer use before trying to add another.
Check the AirTag battery only if Find My reports it is low
A low-battery notification may appear on the iPhone, and Find My shows Low Battery beneath the AirTag’s name. If you see that status, replace the cell; a location delay by itself is not a reason to buy a battery.

Apple specifies a CR2032 lithium 3V coin battery. Install it with the positive side facing up, and check that the package explicitly says Compatible with Apple AirTag. Some bitterant-coated CR2032 batteries might not work. Apple also warns that coin cells can cause choking or other injury, so keep the battery away from children. Follow Apple’s AirTag battery replacement instructions.
Reset the AirTag only after simpler checks fail
Reset procedures differ by generation, so identify whether you have the first-generation AirTag or AirTag (2nd generation) before starting. Both procedures involve removing and reinserting the battery and listening for sounds. Apple warns that AirTags and their battery parts can pose a choking hazard to small children.

First-generation AirTag
- Press down on the stainless steel battery cover, turn it counterclockwise, and remove the cover and battery.
- Put the battery back in and press down until it makes a sound.
- Repeat removing and replacing the battery until five sounds have played. The fifth sound differs from the earlier sounds; it confirms the AirTag is ready to pair.
- Replace the cover, aligning its three tabs with the slots, then turn it clockwise until it stops.
AirTag (2nd generation)
- Press down on the stainless steel battery cover, turn it counterclockwise, and remove the cover and battery.
- Reinsert the battery and press down until it makes a sound. Keep pressing for two more seconds, then remove the battery and wait 12 seconds.
- Repeat that replacement, press, and removal cycle four more times. The fifth sound indicates the AirTag is ready to pair.
- Replace the cover, align its three tabs with the slots, and turn it clockwise until it stops.
Use Apple’s generation-specific AirTag reset instructions if the sequence or sound confirmation is unclear.
Resolve an AirTag linked to someone else’s Apple Account
An AirTag can be associated with one Apple Account at a time. If it belonged to another person, that person must remove it from their account before you can use it. If the former owner removed it while the AirTag was out of Bluetooth range, Apple says the AirTag also needs to be reset before it can be paired with another device. Resetting does not replace the requirement for the former owner to remove it from their account.

What an AirTag location delay means
An AirTag does not send a continuous GPS feed. Nearby Apple devices can detect it over Bluetooth and relay its approximate location through the Find My network, which Apple describes as anonymous and encrypted and made up of over a billion Apple devices. If the tag is not detected by the network, its map point may simply be the last known location.
Apple says Find My may show a last known location for up to seven days when it cannot show a current one. After more than seven days without the AirTag sending a location through the network, the app shows No location found. If a device is online but unable to send its location—for example, because of a Location Services issue—the status can read Not sharing location • Online. These labels describe different conditions; neither means that the map is receiving a fresh AirTag location.

If the AirTag may be nearby
Use Play Sound in Find My to help locate a nearby AirTag. Precision Finding may also be available when the AirTag is close and you have a supported iPhone. These features help locate an item nearby; they do not make the Find My network report a distant tag sooner. Apple’s iOS 26 User Guide explains the available locating options.
