Most FSR 4 crashes and visual defects are solved by matching a supported Radeon RX 9000-series GPU with a current game and Adrenalin driver, then clearing shader and profile state before changing image settings. If that does not help, disable overlays, injectors, HDR, VRR, and frame generation in a controlled sequence so you can identify the interaction causing the failure.
What FSR 4 is—and what must be true for it to work
AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) combines temporal upscaling with optional frame generation. It reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render and, when enabled, can create intermediate frames for smoother motion. Those stages depend on the game’s implementation, DirectX 12 behavior, the display pipeline, and the graphics driver; a fault in any one of them can look like an FSR problem.
Hardware eligibility is the first check. AMD’s launch announcement made FSR 4 exclusive to Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards. Later Adrenalin 25.9.1 release notes say FSR 4 can be enabled in most games that support FSR 3.1 with DirectX 12, but “most” does not mean every title or every patch. The game must expose a working FSR 4 integration, and its version must match the driver’s supported path.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Requirement | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| GPU | Radeon RX 9000-series card | FSR 4 support is restricted to this generation according to AMD’s launch documentation. |
| Game API | A title with an official FSR 4 implementation, generally through its DirectX 12/FSR 3.1 support path | FSR 4 is not a universal driver switch for games that do not integrate it. |
| Driver | A current AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition package | Known issues and compatibility change between driver releases. |
| Game build | The latest patch offered by the developer | FSR code, shaders, and anti-cheat or overlay behavior can change with a patch. |
AMD originally announced more than 30 FSR 4 games at launch and 75 planned for later that year. Those are launch-era figures, not a current support count. Always check the individual game’s settings and patch notes rather than assuming that an FSR 3.1 title has FSR 4 in every build.

Identify the failure before changing settings
Use the symptom to choose the shortest useful test. A crash, a display-timing flicker, and temporal ghosting can have different triggers even when they appear after the same menu change.
| Symptom | Likely interaction to test first | Safe first change |
|---|---|---|
| Crash at launch or immediately after enabling FSR 4 | Unsupported combination, stale shader cache, injector, or driver timeout | Update, clear shader state, remove hooks, then test the default FSR 4 preset. |
| Rapid flicker or alternating frames | HDR, variable refresh rate (VRR), fullscreen mode, overlay, or frame generation | Test one display with HDR and VRR off, then compare fullscreen modes. |
| Shimmering, crawling edges, or ghost trails | Over-aggressive sharpening, a lower quality mode, or temporal/frame-generation artifacts | Reduce sharpening, use a higher-quality mode, and disable frame generation for a comparison. |
| Broken HUD, menus, or text | Game integration, ReShade/mod injection, or a presentation-mode conflict | Remove injectors and mods, then compare borderless and exclusive fullscreen. |
Follow this recovery sequence in order
1. Update the driver, patch the game, and reboot
Install the current Adrenalin package for your Radeon card, apply every available game update, and restart Windows. Do not assume that a driver labeled “optional” is irrelevant: AMD’s 25.6.3 optional release notes include a game-specific FSR 4 texture-flicker issue, while the 25.9.1 notes include a different FSR 4 crash/timeout issue. The known-issue list and supported-game matrix are version-specific.
After rebooting, launch the game once with no other troubleshooting changes. If the symptom has disappeared, record the versions that worked. If it remains, continue without changing several options at the same time.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →2. Confirm the GPU and the game’s actual support
Check the installed GPU model in Windows or Adrenalin and confirm that it is an RX 9000-series product. In the game’s graphics menu, look for an explicit FSR 4 option rather than assuming that a generic “upscaling” label uses it. Verify the title’s patch notes or support documentation for FSR 4 and DirectX 12.
If the card is not in the RX 9000 series, FSR 4 is not an eligible feature according to AMD’s launch requirements. Do not try to force it through a configuration file or injector; that creates an unsupported test and can introduce crashes or corrupted output unrelated to the game’s supported path.
3. Reset shader cache and the game profile
Close the game completely. In AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, use the built-in shader-cache reset control. If the game documents its own shader-cache reset, follow that procedure as well. Then restore the game’s profile to default values and launch again.

The first run after a cache reset may compile shaders and stutter briefly. That is expected; let the process finish in the same repeatable scene you will use for comparison. Avoid changing quality, sharpening, ray tracing, frame generation, and display mode during this first retest. A clean baseline tells you whether stale compiled data was the trigger.
4. Remove software hooks and injectors
Temporarily disable Radeon overlays, recording features, in-game FPS counters, third-party overlays, ReShade, graphics injectors, and mods. These tools intercept rendering or presentation calls and can conflict with a new upscaler or frame-generation path.
Run the game with only its own FSR 4 implementation enabled. If it works, re-enable one external component at a time, restarting the game between tests. The component that recreates the fault is the actionable conflict; leave it disabled, update it, or use a supported alternative.
5. Establish a controlled FSR 4 baseline
Choose the game’s default FSR 4 preset and normal sharpening. Pick a repeatable scene—such as the same save location, benchmark run, or quiet camera pan—and capture a screenshot or short video. Change one variable per run: quality mode, sharpening, frame generation, or ray-tracing load.
Write down each result. If a problem appears only after one change, you have a reproducible trigger rather than a general “FSR is broken” diagnosis. Keep the working baseline available so you can recover quickly after each test.
6. Isolate HDR, VRR, displays, and fullscreen mode
Display timing can make a rendering defect look like alternating frames or brightness pulsing. Test with HDR off, VRR off, one monitor connected, and the game in its alternate fullscreen mode. For example, compare borderless fullscreen with exclusive fullscreen if both are offered.

Also test the exact action that precedes the fault: launching with HDR already enabled, switching HDR while the game is running, alt-tabbing, or moving the window between monitors. Restore your preferred display settings after you identify the trigger. If the issue exists only in one combination, report that combination instead of describing it as universal flicker.
7. Check the known-issue entry for your driver version
Read the release notes for the installed Adrenalin version and the immediately newer package. AMD’s 25.6.3 notes document texture flickering or corruption in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered with FSR enabled on a Radeon RX 9070 XT. AMD’s 25.9.1 notes document intermittent application crashes or driver timeouts in WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers when FSR 4 is enabled on Radeon RX 9000-series products.
These entries are examples of title- and version-specific defects. If your game appears in a known-issues list, changing every local setting may not remove the defect; use the documented workaround, update when AMD or the developer ships a fix, and include the exact release-note version in any support request.
8. Escalate with a reproducible evidence package
When the clean baseline still fails, collect the details a developer or AMD Support can act on:
- Game name, exact patch or build, and distribution platform.
- Radeon GPU model, Windows build, and Adrenalin driver version.
- FSR 4 quality mode, sharpening value, frame-generation state, and ray-tracing state.
- Resolution, HDR and VRR state, monitor count, and fullscreen mode.
- Every overlay, recording tool, ReShade preset, and mod that was enabled or disabled.
- The precise reproduction steps, frequency, and the scene or save where it occurs.
- A screenshot or video showing the artifact, plus crash or timeout information if available.
Send the package to the game developer and AMD Support. “It crashes with FSR” is difficult to triage; “it times out only in this scene with driver version, frame generation on, HDR on, and overlay disabled” is a testable report.
Fix crashes and driver timeouts
Crash on launch
- Update Adrenalin and the game, then reboot.
- Confirm an RX 9000-series GPU and official FSR 4 support.
- Reset the shader cache and restore the game profile to defaults.
- Disable overlays, ReShade, injectors, and mods.
- Launch with the default FSR 4 preset and frame generation off.
If the game starts after step five, re-enable frame generation and external tools separately. If it still fails before the menu, capture the versions and send them to support rather than repeatedly changing unrelated graphics options.

Crash or timeout when enabling FSR 4 in-game
Start from a working native-resolution or other-upscaler configuration, enter a repeatable scene, and enable only FSR 4. If the change causes the failure, reset the cache again, remove hooks, and test the same scene with frame generation disabled. A timeout limited to one game may match a known driver entry; a timeout across several supported games points more strongly to a system-level interaction that needs a clean baseline and support logs.

Stop flicker and alternating frames
Flicker that follows HDR, VRR, or alt-tab
Disable HDR and VRR, use one monitor, and compare borderless with exclusive fullscreen. Test alt-tab only after the scene is stable. If one display mode eliminates the flicker, keep it as a temporary workaround and report the exact combination. Do not change quality mode and display timing in the same run, or you will not know which change helped.
Flicker that appears only with frame generation
Turn frame generation off while keeping the same FSR 4 quality mode. If the alternating frames stop, compare motion in a static scene with frame generation on and off. This isolates the generated-frame path from the upscaler itself. Keep overlays and recording disabled during the comparison because they can alter presentation timing.
Title-specific texture corruption
Texture flicker or corruption in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on an RX 9070 XT with FSR enabled is listed in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 25.6.3 release notes. If your configuration matches that entry, record the driver version and follow newer release notes for a fix instead of treating the texture defect as proof that the GPU is failing.
Reduce shimmering, ghosting, and unstable detail
Use quality mode as an image-stability test
Compare FSR 4 quality modes in the same static scene. A higher-quality mode supplies more input detail and may reduce crawling edges or fine-detail breakup, while a lower-quality mode generally gives the renderer less information. This is a test axis, not a universal ranking: the best choice depends on the game’s implementation, output resolution, and scene.
Lower sharpening before changing resolution
Excessive sharpening can make temporal noise look like shimmer and can exaggerate ringing around text or thin geometry. Reduce sharpening one step at a time, capture the same camera view, and stop when fine detail looks stable without becoming soft. Keep the quality mode fixed while testing sharpening.

Separate upscaling artifacts from frame-generation artifacts
Disable frame generation and inspect slow camera movement, foliage, particles, and characters crossing the screen. If ghost trails remain, the issue is in the upscaling or game motion-vector path. If they appear only when generated frames are enabled, report the frame-generation state and test with that feature off until a driver or game update addresses it.
Repair broken HUD elements and menus
HUD corruption often indicates an integration or presentation conflict rather than a defective GPU. Disable ReShade, mods, and overlays first, then compare borderless and exclusive fullscreen. Verify that the game’s own FSR 4 implementation is selected and that no configuration file is forcing an unsupported renderer.
Check static menus as well as gameplay. If menus are broken but the 3D scene is clear, capture both views; the developer may need to fix a UI render layer that is not handled correctly by the game’s FSR 4 integration.

| Test axis | Keep constant | Change | Observe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality mode | Resolution, sharpening, frame generation, display timing | One FSR 4 quality preset | Fine-detail stability versus rendering performance in the same scene. |

Run each comparison long enough to reproduce the symptom, but change only one column at a time. A setting that looks better in a different scene is not a reliable fix.
When an upgrade is—or is not—the answer
If your current card is outside the Radeon RX 9000 series, buying an FSR 4-compatible Radeon GPU is a hardware eligibility decision, not a troubleshooting tweak. If you already have an eligible card and the defect is limited to one game or one driver release, an upgrade is unlikely to be the first remedy: update software, reset state, remove hooks, and check known issues first.
Before considering hardware replacement, reproduce the problem with a clean profile, no overlays or mods, current software, and a documented display configuration. A fault that disappears under those conditions is more likely an interaction than physical GPU failure.
Prevent the problem from returning
- Keep a note of the Adrenalin and game versions that work together.
- After a driver or game update, test one known scene before restoring overlays and mods.
- Keep a clean FSR 4 profile available for comparison with your customized profile.
- Change one variable at a time and save screenshots of stable and failing states.
- Read each new driver’s known-issues section for your games before switching features back on.
FSR 4 troubleshooting is therefore a compatibility and isolation exercise: verify RX 9000 hardware and official game support, update both software components, reset compiled state, remove rendering hooks, and then isolate image quality, frame generation, and display timing. That process distinguishes a fixable local configuration from a title- or driver-specific defect that needs an update.
