If people can’t hear you when you use AirPods with a Samsung Galaxy phone, first find out whether the problem is the phone’s built-in microphone, the AirPods connection, or a particular calling app. Record a short clip with Bluetooth off, then compare a call with AirPods connected against another call context. AirPods can work as a Bluetooth headset on Android for listening and talking, but that does not guarantee identical controls or behavior across every model and app.
1. Check that the AirPods are connected for the call
Apple says AirPods can be used as a Bluetooth headset with a non-Apple device: you can listen and talk, but Siri is unavailable. That confirms basic Android compatibility, not that every Galaxy model, AirPods generation, Android version, or calling app handles audio identically. Apple’s AirPods pairing guide explains how to pair them; the case’s pairing procedure varies by generation.
If the AirPods are already saved in your Galaxy’s Bluetooth list, check whether they appear connected before placing a test call. If the connection seems unreliable, disconnect and reconnect them, or remove the saved pairing and pair them again using the instructions for your AirPods model. Menu labels and locations can vary by Galaxy model and software version.
2. Test the Samsung phone’s microphone with Bluetooth off
This separates a possible phone-microphone problem from a Bluetooth-call problem. Samsung’s troubleshooting procedure recommends disconnecting external devices, turning Bluetooth off, and recording a short sample with Voice Recorder or Camera. - If the recording is clear: the phone’s built-in microphone is working in that test. Focus next on the AirPods connection, the calling app, and call settings.
- If the recording is silent or distorted: troubleshoot the Galaxy microphone independently of the AirPods, following Samsung’s support guidance.
Samsung advises against using compressed air to clean the phone’s microphone because it can damage the device. A recording test is more useful than assuming a blocked or broken phone microphone from a call symptom alone.
3. Compare a phone call with another calling app
With AirPods connected, make a brief test call. If possible, compare it with a call in a different app. Note whether the other person hears silence, muffled speech, or intermittent audio, and whether the issue occurs in every call context or just one.

If the built-in recording is clear but only one app has the problem, check that app’s mute state and update it; reinstalling may be appropriate if the issue persists. Samsung recommends updating apps when troubleshooting app-specific problems. Different apps are not guaranteed to handle Bluetooth audio the same way, so a failure in one app does not by itself prove the AirPods microphone is faulty.
4. Try Galaxy Mic mode only if it is available
On select Galaxy devices and supported call contexts, Samsung offers Mic mode during a call. Samsung’s instructions describe opening Quick Settings during the supported call and selecting Mic mode. The available choices are:

- Full spectrum: captures voice and background sounds.
Availability depends on the device and call context. Samsung lists supported situations such as particular Phone or Contacts calls and speakerphone VoIP calls; not every Galaxy or call exposes the control. If Mic mode is absent, Samsung says the feature may not be supported on that device or in that context. 5. Check simple connection and call settings
Samsung’s call-troubleshooting material for Galaxy Buds—not AirPods—mentions connection strength, wearing position, surroundings, software updates, settings, and accidental muting. These are reasonable low-risk checks for a Bluetooth call, but Samsung’s Galaxy Buds instructions do not establish AirPods-specific behavior or controls.

- Keep the Galaxy phone nearby and retry the call after reconnecting the AirPods.
- Check that the calling app is not muted and that the AirPods are seated normally.
- Retry in a quieter place if background sound may be interfering with the conversation.
- Check for available software updates for the phone and calling app.

Apple documents choosing an AirPods microphone in settings on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The reviewed official guidance does not confirm that Samsung phones provide the same left, right, or automatic microphone control, so do not assume there is an equivalent Android setting. Apple’s instructions are specifically for its supported Apple-device settings: change settings for AirPods or AirPods Pro.

When to contact support
If the Galaxy’s standalone recording is silent or distorted with Bluetooth off, use Samsung’s support path for a phone microphone issue. If that recording is clear but calls fail only when using AirPods, give support the AirPods generation, Galaxy model, Android and One UI versions, and the calling app where the failure occurs. Those details help distinguish a phone issue from a connection or app-specific problem.
