When AirConsole will not work in a car, troubleshoot in this order: confirm that the vehicle, country and subscription are eligible; launch the in-car AirConsole Games app; pair each phone with the displayed QR code or connect code; then fix network quality, phone compatibility and battery-saving interruptions. The car screen is the console (the “Big Screen”); each phone is a separate controller.
Understand which part is failing
AirConsole uses two connected roles. The vehicle infotainment display runs the game as the Big Screen, while a smartphone supplies the controls. The phone does not pair to the car like a Bluetooth gamepad. Instead, it joins the game session by scanning a QR code on the vehicle display or by opening the AirConsole app (or airconsole.com) and entering the connect code shown on that display.
This distinction matters because a failure at one layer can look like a failure at another. A car that is not eligible cannot launch the game service; a game that launches but shows no controller is a phone-pairing problem; a controller that connects and then freezes is usually a network, browser, app or phone-state problem.

AirConsole says it can only be used when the vehicle is parked. Complete setup and play with the car in Park, not while driving.

1. Confirm the car is eligible before troubleshooting the phone
Do this check first. If the vehicle, market or subscription is unsupported, repeating QR scans will not solve the problem.
Supported model and model-year checks
AirConsole’s current supported-car list includes Volkswagen Golf, T-Roc, Tiguan, Tayron, Passat Variant, ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 and ID.7 Tourer models. It also lists Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Audi Q3 (model year 2026) and Audi Q5 (model year 2025). A model name alone is not a guarantee: equipment, software version and country availability can narrow eligibility.
Country and subscription
Availability is country-specific. Listed Volkswagen vehicles require an active VW Connect Plus subscription. Check the supported-car list for your country and verify that the connected-services subscription is active before investigating controller symptoms.

- The exact vehicle model and model year appear on AirConsole’s supported-car list.
- The vehicle is in a country where the service is offered.
- The required connected-services subscription is active (for the listed Volkswagen setup, VW Connect Plus).
- The infotainment system has current software and access to its in-car app store.
- The car is parked before you open or configure AirConsole.
2. Launch AirConsole correctly on the vehicle display
For a supported Volkswagen, open the vehicle’s entertainment package or in-car app store, install AirConsole Games from the VW In-Car Shop, and launch it. The game screen should then display a QR code and a connect code. Keep that screen visible while players join.

If AirConsole Games is missing from the store, do not treat that as a controller fault. Recheck country, model, software and subscription eligibility. A missing app can indicate that the vehicle is outside the supported configuration.
3. Pair a phone as an AirConsole controller
- Park the vehicle. Put the car in Park before opening the game or pairing phones.
- Start AirConsole Games on the Big Screen. Wait for the QR code and connect code to appear.
- Use the AirConsole phone app when possible. AirConsole recommends the app because it is faster and generally provides a more reliable controller experience.
- Scan the QR code. Use the phone camera in good light and follow the prompt to open the AirConsole app or the service in a browser.
- Enter the code manually if scanning fails. Open the AirConsole app or airconsole.com yourself and type the connect code shown on the car display.
- Wait for the controller screen. Once accepted, the phone should show the controls for the game running on the vehicle display.
- Repeat for other players. Each player uses a separate phone and the same connect code displayed for that game session.
Multiple phones can join one session with the same code. The first phone that connects becomes the Main Controller, or host. If one person needs to host the game, have that phone join first.
4. Fix a QR code or connect-code failure
The camera does not recognize the QR code
- Hold the phone steady and move it until the code is sharply focused.
- Improve cabin lighting and clean the phone camera lens.
- Try the camera again rather than repeatedly tapping an old notification.
- If it still fails, open the AirConsole app or airconsole.com manually and enter the displayed connect code.
The code opens the wrong page or nothing happens
Install or open the AirConsole app instead of relying on a camera redirect. If you use a browser, type the service address manually and enter the current code. A code belongs to the active game session, so use the code currently visible on the vehicle screen rather than one saved from an earlier session.
One phone connects but another does not
Check that every player is using the same, currently displayed connect code and a different phone. The first connected phone is the Main Controller; later phones should join the same session instead of starting a new one. If the display has returned to its start screen, relaunch the game and use the new code.

5. Check phone and browser requirements
An old operating system, unsupported browser or an overloaded phone can prevent the controller page from loading or responding.

Close unrelated apps and browser tabs before connecting. Do not switch away from the controller during loading or play; leaving the controller app can interrupt its session or make controls feel delayed.
6. Fix a connected controller that lags or disconnects
AirConsole says most disconnects happen when the console device and controller lose internet connectivity. Work through these checks without changing several variables at once.
Stabilize the network
- Keep players on the same Wi-Fi network as the console where that network arrangement applies.
- If the car is using mobile data, verify that the data allowance has not been exhausted.
- Move the vehicle to a location with stronger mobile coverage. Underground garages are a common example of a place where coverage is poor.
- Check that the connection can meet AirConsole’s 8 Mbps minimum recommended speed (AirConsole, 2026).
A controller can remain visibly connected while commands arrive late if the link is congested. Improve the signal before repeatedly reconnecting phones.

Reduce phone workload
- Close background apps and unused browser tabs.
- Keep the AirConsole app or controller tab in the foreground.
- Avoid switching to messaging, camera or other apps while a game is loading or running.
- Use the AirConsole app rather than a mobile browser when the app is available.
Prevent power-saving interruptions
If the phone enters low-battery mode, disable that mode for the session and connect the phone to power. A USB car charger is a practical optional accessory. Battery-saving restrictions can suspend the controller app or reduce network activity, which appears as lag or a sudden disconnect.
Refresh the correct side
When the connection still does not recover, refresh the console browser window if the Big Screen is running AirConsole in a browser, or restart the AirConsole app. Then launch a fresh session and have each phone join with the new QR code or connect code. A stale session code may not accept controllers after the display has been refreshed.

Some cars reach AirConsole through an infotainment or phone-projection layer. If the car cannot establish Android Auto or CarPlay at all, fix that layer first; AirConsole troubleshooting cannot repair a failed projection connection.
Android Auto
For wireless Android Auto, Google recommends leaving Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled while pairing. Perform setup with the vehicle in Park. First verify that the phone and car are compatible and that mobile-data coverage is adequate. Once Android Auto itself connects reliably, return to the in-car AirConsole launch and controller steps.

CarPlay
For CarPlay, Apple recommends checking the USB cable for a wired connection, or the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi link for a wireless connection. If CarPlay does not open automatically, select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display. Restart the iPhone and car, confirm that Siri is enabled, and check Screen Time restrictions. You can forget the car in the iPhone’s CarPlay settings and add it again, then check for vehicle-stereo firmware updates.
These projection checks are separate from the AirConsole QR-code pairing. A phone may have working CarPlay or Android Auto but still need to join AirConsole with the session code shown on the Big Screen.
8. Diagnose by symptom

9. A clean restart procedure
Use this sequence when several symptoms occur at once or the cause is unclear:

- Close the AirConsole controller app or browser tab on every phone.
- Close background apps and disable low-battery mode; connect phones to a USB charger if available.
- Check mobile coverage, Wi-Fi arrangement and remaining data allowance.
- On the vehicle, refresh the console browser window or restart the AirConsole app.
- Wait for a new QR code and connect code.
- Connect the intended Main Controller first, then have additional players join with separate phones using that same new code.
- If the service is still absent or unavailable, return to the vehicle model, country and subscription checks instead of repeatedly resetting phones.
10. What to verify before contacting support
Record the exact vehicle model and model year, country, infotainment software version, active connected-services subscription, phone model and operating-system version, whether the app or browser was used, and whether the problem was launch, pairing, lag or disconnection. Note whether the vehicle was in a garage or another low-coverage location and whether the phone was in low-battery mode. These details identify the failing layer more quickly than a description such as “AirConsole does not connect.”
The reliable path is therefore sequential: eligibility, in-car launch, QR/code pairing, network, phone software and battery state, then Android Auto or CarPlay if projection itself is failing. Keep the car parked throughout setup and play.
