Most Abiotic Factor launch failures can be narrowed down by symptom: a splash-video freeze usually needs the splash file removed, a runtime error points to Visual C++ repairs, and a crash or “Fatal Error” shortly after launch calls for requirements checks, DX11, file verification, and mod removal. Work through the general fixes first, then use the procedure that matches the exact message or screen.
Use this troubleshooting order first
Do these steps in sequence. They are low-risk, address the most common causes, and make later diagnosis easier.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Close non-essential software. Temporarily disable overlays, hardware-monitoring utilities, recording tools, RGB controllers, and other background programs that hook into games. Re-enable them one at a time after Abiotic Factor works.
- Verify the installation in Steam. Steam can replace missing or corrupted installed content that causes crashes.
- Update Windows and your graphics driver. Install the current driver for your GPU and restart afterward.
- Compare your PC with the published requirements. Hosting multiplayer needs somewhat more CPU capacity than simply joining a game.
- Try the DX11 launch option. This is the developer’s recommended fallback for lower-end systems and many launch crashes.
- Lower graphics settings and use an SSD. These changes reduce startup and streaming pressure.
- Remove third-party mods. Uninstall them and clear leftover mod files if needed.
- Apply the symptom-specific fix below. The splash-video, Visual C++, and SECURE CRT procedures target different failure points.
- Report an unresolved problem to the Abiotic Factor Bug Hub. Include the exact error, hardware, Windows version, launch mode, and steps already tried.
Check whether your PC meets Abiotic Factor’s requirements
A system can start other games successfully and still fail Abiotic Factor if it falls below one of these requirements. The Steam listing accessed on October 20, 2026 specifies the following:

To check your hardware, press Win+R, enter dxdiag, and review the System and Display tabs. In Task Manager, open Performance to see installed memory, CPU model, GPU model, and disk type. Keep at least the stated 10 GB free; Windows updates, shader caches, and save data also need working space. The developer notes that hosting multiplayer has slightly higher CPU requirements, so a machine near the minimum may launch more reliably as a client than as a host.

The Steam listing shows 96% positive English reviews from 29,164 reviews as of October 20, 2026. That is a store-sentiment statistic, not evidence that crashes are rare on every configuration.
Fix a black screen or freeze on the splash video
If the game opens to a black screen or stops while the introductory splash video is loading, remove that video file. This is the developer’s specific workaround.
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click Abiotic Factor and choose Manage > Browse local files.
- Open
AbioticFactoru005cContent Movies. In a normal Windows path this is the game folder, followed byContentu005cMovies. - Delete
ABF_SplashScreens.mp4. - Launch the game again.
If the game still does not start, verify the files in Steam. Verification can restore the deleted video and repair any other missing or corrupted content. If the video itself is what triggers the freeze, delete it again after verification and retry. Do not delete unrelated folders or save data.

Repair Visual C++ launch errors
A missing or damaged Microsoft Visual C++ runtime can stop the game before its window appears. Repair both architectures, even on 64-bit Windows, because games and supporting components can use either one.
- Press
Win+R, typeappwiz.cpl, and press Enter. - Find Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64).
- Right-click it, choose Change (or Modify), select Repair, and complete the installer.
- Repeat the process for Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x86).
- Restart Windows and test Abiotic Factor before changing other settings.
If one entry is absent, install the current Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable packages from Microsoft, then restart. Use Microsoft’s official installer rather than an unofficial download site.
Handle “Fatal Error” and crashes shortly after launch
Start with the DX11 option
When Steam offers multiple launch choices, select Play Abiotic Factor (DX11 for Lower-End PCs). DX11 is the correct first test when DX12 crashes, the game closes immediately, or the system is close to the minimum GPU or CPU requirement. After a successful launch, you can test DX12 later if your hardware meets the recommended specification.

Verify files and reduce graphics load
In Steam, open the game’s Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Wait for Steam to finish, then restart Steam and launch with DX11. If it starts, lower demanding settings such as resolution, shadows, effects, and view distance before trying DX12 again.
Check drivers, Windows, and storage
- Install pending Windows updates and reboot.
- Install the latest stable driver for your GeForce or Radeon GPU.
- Move the game to an SSD if it is installed on a slow or failing hard drive.
- Keep free space beyond the game’s stated 10 GB requirement so Windows and the game can create temporary files.
Remove third-party mods completely
The developer does not provide official support for third-party mods. A mod can remain incompatible after a game update even when the base installation is intact.
- Uninstall or disable every Abiotic Factor mod through the mod manager or installation method you used.
- Close Steam completely, including its notification-area process.
- Inspect the game folder for files and directories added by mods and remove only those belonging to the mods.
- Use Steam’s file verification to restore official files.
- Launch an unmodified copy before reinstalling any mod. Add mods back one at a time so a failure can be identified.
If you cannot determine which files were modified, back up your saves, uninstall the game, delete the remaining installation folder, reinstall, and verify the files. Keep the save backup separate from the installation directory.

Fix a SECURE CRT Fatal Error
A SECURE CRT Fatal Error is associated with the game’s GameAnalytics logging path. Try the documented launch option first:
- In Steam, right-click Abiotic Factor and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, find Launch Options.
- Enter
-disablegameanalytics. - Close the Properties window and launch the game.
If the error remains, inspect the log named ga_log.txt in %localappdata%/AbioticFactor/Saved/. Paste that path into File Explorer’s address bar. If the folder is not visible, enable View > Show > Hidden items in File Explorer. The developer’s alternatives are to address or delete ga_log.txt, add the local AbioticFactor folder to Windows Security exclusions, or allow AbioticFactor.exe through Controlled Folder Access.
Security exclusions reduce protection, so use the narrowest folder or executable exception possible, only on a copy of the game obtained from Steam, and remove the exception if it does not resolve the error. Do not disable Windows Security globally.

When antivirus blocks the game
An antivirus alert can be a false positive. First, let the security product identify the exact file and check whether it is inside the official Steam installation. Then verify the game files or reinstall it, and whitelist the Abiotic Factor installation only if you trust the files and the alert is clearly erroneous. Relaunch after the security change. If the warning names a file outside the game directory, do not whitelist it automatically; scan the system and investigate that file separately.
Choose DX11 or DX12

DX11 versus DX12 is not a universal quality verdict. The correct choice depends on your driver, GPU, Windows build, and whether one API is triggering the crash. Keep the stable option while diagnosing; change only one variable at a time.
Steam verification and clean relaunch procedure
Use this branch when the error is inconsistent, appears after an update, or does not match the splash, Visual C++, or SECURE CRT symptoms.
- Exit Abiotic Factor and Steam.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Steam without launching other games or overlays.
- Right-click Abiotic Factor, choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files, and wait for completion.
- Update Windows and the GPU driver if either has a pending update.
- Launch with DX11.
- If the game reaches the menu, lower graphics settings and test a new session before loading a heavily modified save.
Verification can download replacement files and may restore files removed by the splash-video workaround or a mod. It does not repair Windows components, graphics drivers, failing storage, or incompatible third-party software, so continue with the relevant section if the crash returns.
What to collect before reporting a bug
If the documented workarounds do not solve the problem, submit a report through the Abiotic Factor Bug Hub. A useful report lets the developer separate a game defect from a system-specific configuration issue.

The developer’s pinned troubleshooting post, dated May 2, 2024 and last edited July 22, 2025, directs players to the Abiotic Factor Bug Hub when the suggested solution and general troubleshooting methods do not resolve the problem. No single workaround is guaranteed for every PC, so preserve the exact error and configuration details when escalating.
