A freeze exactly at each MP4 loop boundary usually points to the source’s timing, audio/video duration mismatch, or loop behavior. A freeze at unpredictable times instead calls for checking FFmpeg output and CPU load, YouTube Live Control Room health messages, and the stability of your upload connection. Start by identifying the pattern; the right fix depends on the evidence.
1. Pin down when the freeze happens
Before changing FFmpeg flags, note the time of each freeze and whether audio continues. Also check whether the problem appears in a local recording or preview, or only in the YouTube stream.
- At every loop boundary: investigate the loop option, source timestamps and keyframes, and whether audio and video have different durations.
- Once after a period of running, at random times, or increasingly often: check FFmpeg warnings and progress, CPU load, YouTube’s timestamped health errors, and outbound upload stability.
- Only some viewers report buffering: compare their reports with the encoder preview and Live Control Room health. Viewer-side buffering alone does not identify the cause.
Use the pattern to choose what to inspect next rather than assuming one cause. Without your exact command, FFmpeg logs, file stream layout, and YouTube health messages, no single fix can be confirmed.
2. Check that FFmpeg is looping the intended input
FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output. Put -stream_loop -1 immediately before the MP4’s -i, not after it. For file playback intended to behave like a live source, -re can pace input reading in real time. Verify option placement and behavior against the FFmpeg version installed on your system and the output command you are using. FFmpeg documents its command-line option scope at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html; a focused guide discusses looping examples and source-related caveats at video.stackexchange.com/questions/12905/repeat-loop-input-video-with-ffmpeg.

If the loop does not repeat at all, first confirm that -stream_loop -1 is before the -i for the file you want repeated and that the input can seek back to its beginning. Do not move options around indiscriminately: their position determines which input or output they affect.
3. If the pause happens at every join, inspect the MP4
Compare audio and video durations
Check whether the MP4 contains audio and compare the duration of its audio and video streams. If audio outlasts video, the video may hold its final frame at the join while the audio continues. That is a plausible explanation to test, not a diagnosis that applies to every file. If audio is not needed, test a loop without it and observe whether the boundary pause changes.

Check timestamps and keyframes
Looping by stream copy can depend on the source’s keyframes and timestamps. Inspect the file’s stream layout and timing, then test a remuxed copy as a diagnostic. A remux can help distinguish a source-container or timestamp issue from other causes, but it is not guaranteed to eliminate a boundary hold.
Do not assume that re-encoding or adding timestamp-generation flags will fix a duration mismatch. First establish whether the audio, video, or timing behavior actually changes at the join.

4. Compare FFmpeg output with YouTube’s stream health
While the stream is running, inspect FFmpeg’s input/output mapping, warnings and errors, progress, and CPU load. If you are saving a local archive, check whether its playback shows the same freeze. Then compare those observations with the preview, health indicator, and timestamped messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube explains how to review stream health and encoder messages at support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702.
- The local output is also frozen or FFmpeg reports errors: focus first on the source, mapping, command, and encoder workload.
- The encoder preview looks healthy but the live result does not: investigate outbound connection quality and upload capacity. YouTube says a healthy preview alongside a poor live result can indicate an outbound connection problem; contact your ISP if connection faults persist.
- YouTube reports a specific configuration error: use that message to guide the correction instead of applying a generic recipe.
5. Match the stream to YouTube’s ingest guidance
Use the settings appropriate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are actually sending. YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which must not exceed four seconds. The same guidance provides bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose from the matching row rather than treating one bitrate as universal: YouTube’s live encoder settings.

YouTube’s error guidance also covers configuration-dependent faults involving codec or profile, resolution, bitrate, audio/video stream count, interlacing, and GOP or keyframe interval. Check the exact Live Control Room message and correct the setting it identifies. If your upload connection cannot sustain the selected output, reduce resolution or bitrate to a level it can maintain, using YouTube’s guidance for that configuration: YouTube Live encoder error messages.
YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and movement similar to the real stream, monitor stream health, and review messages during the event. A short test can reveal a mismatch before you rely on the stream.
6. Troubleshoot RTMPS connection errors
If the failure is a connection timeout or certificate error rather than a loop-boundary pause, confirm that the server URL matches the one shown in Live Control Room and that your encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends checking the URL, protocol, and required port when troubleshooting these errors: YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
7. Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you observe | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The file does not repeat | Position of -stream_loop -1 relative to the target -i; whether the input can seek to the beginning |
Place the loop option immediately before the relevant input and verify the input’s seek behavior. |
| A brief hold at every join | Audio/video durations, source timestamps, keyframe placement | Inspect the actual streams; test without audio if unnecessary, or test a remuxed copy. |
| The freeze is intermittent or gets worse over time | FFmpeg errors and progress, CPU load, local output, timestamped YouTube health errors, upload capacity | Use the evidence to distinguish encoder workload, ingest configuration, and connection stability. |
| YouTube flags a setting | The specific codec, profile, resolution, bitrate, stream-count, audio, interlace, or keyframe/GOP message | Correct the reported issue and use the matching YouTube guidance; lower output demands if upload capacity is insufficient. |
| RTMPS timeout or certificate error | Live Control Room URL, protocol, encoder RTMPS support, and port requirement | Confirm each against YouTube’s RTMPS instructions. |
