If your YouTube livestream ends when an MP4 reaches its last frame, make the playback source continue: enable repeat, queue another video, or add suitable filler. YouTube receives a live feed from your encoder; it does not automatically replay a finite video. Also check Live Control Room’s auto-stop setting and confirm the encoder is still sending content.
Why the livestream stops at the end of an MP4
A prerecorded MP4 is finite. When playback reaches its end, the player or encoder may stop producing video; if the encoder then stops sending content, the YouTube livestream can end too. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains that a stream ends when content stops being sent from the encoder. The exact end-of-file behavior depends on the playback and encoder software, rather than a universal YouTube setting. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
A separate factor is auto-stop. If enabled, this option lets the encoder stop the YouTube stream when it stops streaming. Check it rather than assuming the stream will stay open after the source runs out. Manage live stream settings
Fix it: keep the source playing and the encoder sending
- Open the media source or playlist in your player or encoder. Find its repeat, loop, or playlist controls. The labels and exact steps vary by software; YouTube’s help pages do not document controls for specific third-party applications.
- Enable repeat or arrange a next item. Loop the MP4, queue another video, or add an intended slate or other filler so playback does not run out. For a playlist, make sure there is another item ready and that playback continues between items.
- Verify the encoder’s output. Confirm it remains connected to YouTube and continues sending video and audio after the MP4’s endpoint. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a stream URL and stream key configured in the encoder; start the encoder to send the feed, and stop sending content from it when you intend to end the stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- Check Live Control Room settings. Inspect auto-start and auto-stop for the stream. YouTube notes that reused stream settings carry these selections forward, so check them on a reused setup too. If you want to control the live session manually in Live Control Room, confirm auto-stop is not causing the encoder’s end-of-file behavior to end it. Manage live stream settings
- Preview before going live. Confirm the source keeps playing through the point where it previously stopped, then monitor audio and video during the stream. YouTube recommends checking the preview, confirming accessibility through the channel and watch pages, and checking that a local archive file continues growing. Diagnose what you see
| What happens | Likely area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The stream stops at the same point each time, at the MP4 endpoint | Playback ended or playlist ran out | Enable repeat, queue another item, or add appropriate filler. Check whether the encoder continues sending a feed; this is a diagnostic inference from the documented feed lifecycle. |
| The encoder stops and the YouTube stream ends together | Encoder end-of-file behavior or auto-stop | Check the playback source’s end behavior and the stream’s auto-stop option in Live Control Room. YouTube settings guidance |
| The stream fails at varying times, unrelated to the file’s length | Network or encoder stability | Review stream health messages, upload capacity, and local archive growth. Leave upload bandwidth headroom; YouTube recommends 20% headroom. YouTube live streaming tips Streaming tips |
| YouTube still shows the stream as live, but viewers see a frozen or blank image | Playback output or encoder scene | Check the source and encoder preview and monitor whether the encoder is producing video. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify how to recover a scene in a particular app. |
Settings that matter—and ones that do not fix an ended file
For an encoder stream, YouTube recommends keyframes at a 2-second frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are general stream-quality settings, not a remedy for a playlist that has run out. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused as headroom. A network disruption can break a stream, so check upload capacity and stream health if failures happen at inconsistent times. More headroom cannot make a finite MP4 loop; playback must still continue. YouTube streaming tips
Choose a continuous-playback method
For a do-it-yourself setup, compare whether the player or encoder can loop or schedule media, maintain continuous output between files, and use YouTube’s ingest workflow. Also consider whether it requires a computer or dedicated hardware to remain on. YouTube’s guidance does not establish a best third-party product, so choose based on the controls and reliability you can verify in your own setup.
