A yellow border around your screen is often Windows’ visual indicator that an app is capturing or sharing it—not a sign that your monitor is damaged. Stop the capture or sharing session first, then check the app that started it. If the outline appears only during a Snipping Tool action or remains after capture apps close, use the targeted checks below.
Why is there a yellow border around the screen?
Windows Graphics Capture can display a small yellow border around the display or app being captured. Microsoft says the border reminds the user that the visual is being shared or may be recorded. It is a capture-status cue, not, by itself, evidence of a monitor or graphics hardware problem. Microsoft’s Windows Developer Blog explains the capture behavior.
The border can appear during screen recording, screen sharing, or another capture operation. Its exact appearance and controls may vary by Windows build and application, so first note what action was underway and what area is outlined.
How to remove the border during capture or sharing
- Stop the session in the app that started it. End screen sharing, recording, or capture using that app’s on-screen controls. If the border disappears, the capture session was its trigger.
- Check Xbox Game Bar. If Game Bar is recording, press Windows key + Alt + R to stop recording. Microsoft documents this shortcut for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its Game Bar recording guide.
- Check Snipping Tool. Press Windows key + Shift + S to start a still snip or Windows key + Shift + R to start a video snip; if either operation is active, finish or cancel it. These shortcuts are listed in Microsoft’s Snipping Tool support guide.
- Check conferencing and recording apps. If the border began when you joined a meeting or started a recording, stop sharing or recording in that app rather than changing monitor settings.
If the border appears during a Snipping Tool operation
Open Snipping Tool’s settings and look for Show snip outline; a Microsoft Q&A community answer recommends turning it off when the outline is associated with a snip. The setting and its effect can depend on the app and Windows version, and changing it is not a universal way to remove the yellow border used for an active Windows capture session. If the border stays after capture apps close
Close desktop overlay tools
Quit PowerToys if it is running, then check whether the border disappears. A Microsoft Q&A user reported that quitting PowerToys cleared a border and speculated that ZoomIt was involved; this is an individual report, not confirmation that either tool causes every persistent outline. Restart Windows Explorer as a troubleshooting attempt
If the outline remains after you have ended capture and closed relevant apps, you can try restarting Explorer. This is an anecdotal remedy reported for a lingering Snipping Tool border, not a guaranteed fix:

- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer in the process list. If needed, select More details first.
- Select Windows Explorer, then choose Restart. The taskbar and desktop may briefly disappear and return.
Can Windows turn off every yellow capture border?
No single universal Windows switch is established for removing every capture border. Microsoft’s Windows Graphics Capture API describes a borderless-capture option, but the capturing application must request user consent; if the user declines, the border remains during capture. The option is therefore controlled through an app’s capture flow, not a guaranteed system-wide setting. Microsoft GraphicsCaptureAccess API documentation.

- When it appears: during sharing or recording, during a snip, or even when no capture action is underway.
- What it outlines: a captured window or display, a snip area, or the desktop more broadly.
- Which app is active: Game Bar, Snipping Tool, a conferencing or recording app, or an overlay utility such as PowerToys.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 both have documented Game Bar capture workflows, and Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide covers both operating systems. That does not establish identical border controls across every build or app version. If these checks do not identify the trigger, note your Windows version and the app or action that makes the border appear before seeking version-specific help.
