Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your Windows PC appears stuck after hibernation, first press its power button—the wake method supported by the computer—and give it time to resume. If it still does not respond, determine whether it was actually hibernating or shut down, then work through the display, device, and power diagnostics below. Keyboard, mouse, lid, and network wake are not supported on every PC or from every power state.
Confirm whether the PC was hibernating
Hibernate is not the same as sleep or a conventional shutdown. In hibernation, Windows saves the session to a hibernation file and the computer enters the ACPI S4 power state; it appears off until the saved session is restored. Sleep is a different power state.
Fast Startup can make a shutdown confusing: it uses a hibernation file for a hybrid shutdown, but that is not the same transition as hibernating an active user session and waking it later. Microsoft explains the distinctions in its System power states documentation. If you are not sure what happened, note whether you selected Hibernate, Sleep, or Shut down before applying a fix intended for a failed hibernate resume.
Try the computer’s supported wake method
- Press the PC’s power button once, following the instructions for your model, and wait for the display and session to return.
- If that does not work, consult the computer’s manual or manufacturer support page for its documented wake behavior. Microsoft notes that wake capabilities vary by computer and device; do not assume that opening the lid or pressing a keyboard or mouse button will wake a hibernating PC. See Microsoft’s guidance on shutting down, sleeping, or hibernating a PC and its power-state documentation.
Check whether Windows resumed but the display or a device did not
If the PC seems to be running but the monitor, keyboard, mouse, or another connected device is unresponsive, treat that separately from a complete resume failure. Disconnect and reconnect the affected device. If it remains unavailable, restart the PC when possible, then check for current drivers for the device. Microsoft recommends these steps for devices that malfunction after waking from sleep or hibernate: Microsoft support guidance.

Use powercfg to inspect available states and wake information
Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt and run the following commands. They report power configuration and wake information; they do not guarantee a diagnosis of every failed hibernation resume. Microsoft documents these options in its Powercfg command-line options.
| Command | What it reports | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
powercfg /a |
Sleep states available on this PC. | Use it to see which states Windows reports as available; it does not establish why a particular resume failed. |
powercfg /lastwake |
Information about what woke the system from the last sleep transition. | This is history from a prior wake event, not necessarily an explanation of a hibernate attempt that did not resume. |
powercfg /devicequery wake_armed |
Devices currently configured to wake the system. | A device appearing here does not mean it can wake the PC from every power state. |
powercfg /waketimers |
Active wake timers. | This lists timers; it does not identify the root cause of an unresponsive resume. |
Test hibernation configuration carefully
As a controlled configuration test, you can disable and then re-enable hibernation from an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt. Microsoft documents the powercfg /hibernate options in its Powercfg reference.

- Run
powercfg /hibernate off. - Run
powercfg /hibernate onto re-enable the feature.
While hibernation is off, you cannot put the PC into hibernate. Windows requires a hibernation file to hibernate, so restore the setting afterward if you want to use the feature. This is a documented configuration action, not a guaranteed repair for a resume problem.

If the PC still fails to resume, contact the computer or motherboard manufacturer: wake behavior depends on the machine, its firmware, the device, and the power state. Provide the exact PC model, Windows version and build, relevant driver versions, and what happens to the power button and display during an attempted resume. Microsoft directs users to their computer documentation or manufacturer for model-specific wake behavior and device drivers in its PC power guidance.
