Start with a graphics reset and try launching Windows Explorer from Task Manager. If that fails, use Safe Mode to investigate a driver or startup problem, then try System Restore if a restore point predates the failure. These steps help distinguish likely causes; the symptom alone does not identify one.
Choose a recovery path
| Option | Best suited to | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics reset or Explorer launch | A temporary display stall or a desktop shell that did not start | May not help if the underlying cause is a driver, startup conflict, or damaged profile |
| Safe Mode | Separating basic Windows operation from driver or startup issues | Requires access to Windows Recovery Environment |
| System Restore | A failure that followed a recent system change | Requires a restore point from before the problem |
| Registry Shell check | A potentially incorrect desktop-shell setting | Higher risk; an incorrect registry edit can worsen startup or logon behavior |
| Upgrade or replacement | A lasting support and security solution if the PC cannot be maintained safely | May require time, expense, and app or data migration |
Try a graphics reset and start Explorer
- At the black screen, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver.
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and open Task Manager.
- If Windows Explorer appears in Task Manager, select it and choose Restart.
- If Explorer is not listed, select File > Run new task, type
explorer.exe, and press Enter. If the desktop appears, the shell had not started successfully.
Use Safe Mode to isolate a driver or startup problem
From Windows Recovery Environment, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then choose Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking. Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files, drivers, and services.
If the desktop works in Safe Mode, investigate a recent display-driver change, startup service, or other startup conflict. In Safe Mode, open Device Manager and update the display adapter driver; if the problem began after a driver update, use its rollback option instead. A recent software or settings change may also make System Restore a better next step than changing several settings at once.
If you cannot reach Windows Recovery Environment, these instructions do not provide an alternate route into it; avoid guessing at recovery options that could affect your files.

Use System Restore for a recent change
If a restore point was created before the black screen began, System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs to that earlier point while leaving personal files intact, according to Microsoft. It is intended to reverse a recent system change, not to replace a backup of important files.
Check the Shell setting only if you are comfortable editing the registry
Microsoft’s shell troubleshooting guidance points administrators to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon and says the Shell value should be explorer.exe. Back up the registry before making any change. If you are unsure how to do that or confirm the value, do not edit it: an incorrect registry change can make Windows harder to start or sign in to.

Understand the Windows 8.1-specific Userinit issue
Microsoft documented a specific Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 logon defect in which Userinit.exe failed, preventing it from starting Explorer.exe after credentials were entered. Microsoft’s historical resolution was update rollup 2887595 in November 2013. This documented issue is one possible explanation, not evidence that it is the cause of every black screen with a cursor.

Before attempting a reset or reinstall, copy important files to a USB flash drive or external hard drive. Windows 8.1 support ended on January 10, 2023. Microsoft says it no longer provides technical support, software updates, or security fixes for Windows 8.1, and there is no Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. If the computer cannot be maintained safely, moving to a supported Windows release or replacing the hardware is the durable option.
