If your internet stopped working after a storm, the router may not be the cause. The fault could be a loose or damaged cable, a modem or fiber ONT that has not reconnected, or an ISP outage. Check the equipment and connections, restart the modem or ONT before the router, then test where the connection fails before resetting or replacing anything.

1. Check power, lights, and cables

  • Make sure both the router and the upstream modem or fiber ONT have power. Note which indicator lights are on, off, or flashing; their meanings vary by model.
  • Check that the Ethernet cable from the modem or ONT is firmly seated in the router’s WAN or Internet port, not a regular LAN port. Look for loose plugs or visible cable damage. TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking this connection: TP-Link router troubleshooting.
  • If you have another known-good Ethernet cable, try it as a comparison. Do not open the router or power adapter. If equipment is wet, visibly burned, smells scorched, makes unusual sounds, or has damaged wiring, stop using it and ask your provider or the manufacturer about safe replacement.

2. Restart the modem or ONT before the router

Restarting in this order gives the upstream connection time to come back before the router tries to use it. Buffalo’s instructions for internet failures after severe weather or lightning-related power outages are to turn off both devices, wait one minute, turn on the modem, wait for its lights to settle, then turn on the router and allow several more minutes for the connection to stabilize. The exact lights and timing can differ by model; consult its manual. See Buffalo’s storm-related connection guidance.

  1. Turn off the router and modem or ONT.
  2. Wait one minute.
  3. Turn on the modem or ONT and wait until its indicators settle. This may take several minutes.
  4. Turn on the router and wait several more minutes for it to reconnect.

Ofcom’s UK consumer guidance also recommends rebooting broadband equipment, including a router, mesh units, and the ONT used for full fiber: Ofcom broadband advice.

  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Devices connect to Wi-Fi, but none can reach the internet

This points toward the router’s WAN connection, the modem or ONT, or the ISP—not necessarily a failure of the Wi-Fi radio. On Windows, a successful ping to the router confirms that the computer can reach the router, but the problem may still be farther upstream. Microsoft explains this distinction in its Windows network connection troubleshooting guide.

Test the upstream connection directly if your ISP allows it

If practical, connect a computer to the modem with Ethernet and check whether internet service works. Follow your ISP’s instructions: some services need specific settings or activation for a direct connection. TP-Link’s guidance is to contact the ISP if the modem still cannot provide internet after a restart; if internet works with the router removed, investigate the router path, including its WAN cable and settings (TP-Link troubleshooting).

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

4. Check the router’s internet status and settings

If your model has a management page or app, look for its Internet or WAN status. TP-Link says a WAN IP address of 0.0.0.0 means the router has not received a valid address from the modem. Check the cable and modem connection first; the label and interface differ among router models (TP-Link troubleshooting).

Do not change PPPoE, static IP, DNS, or MAC settings unless you know the values your ISP requires. A storm-related outage alone is not evidence that these settings need changing.

  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Also check how your network is arranged before changing router mode. Some provider-supplied gateways already perform routing. Buffalo advises using access point mode on compatible Buffalo devices when the upstream device acts as a router, and router mode when it does not. The right choice depends on the device and ISP setup; ask your provider if you cannot identify the gateway’s role. Do not transfer one manufacturer’s mode-switch instructions to another model (Buffalo guidance).

5. Contact the ISP or router support based on the test results

  • Contact your ISP if the modem or ONT will not reconnect, an ISP-approved direct connection test fails, or you suspect a local outage.
  • Contact the router manufacturer if upstream internet works but the router has no Wi-Fi, does not respond, or continues to show a WAN fault after you have checked its connection.

Have the router and modem or ONT model numbers, the indicator-light status, and the steps you tried ready. Ofcom’s UK guidance discusses rebooting and provider support for broadband problems: Ofcom broadband advice.

6. Use factory reset only after simpler checks

A factory reset removes the router’s configuration, so you may need to set up the network again from scratch. Consider it only after checking the cables, restarting the equipment, testing the upstream service, and verifying the router’s mode. Follow the instructions for your exact model rather than a generic button-press sequence. TP-Link places reset after earlier troubleshooting; Buffalo also directs users to model-specific guidance (TP-Link; Buffalo).

7. Check compatibility before replacing the router

If the ISP confirms service is working and the manufacturer’s model-specific checks do not restore the router, ask whether your provider offers a supported replacement before buying one. Check that any replacement supports your connection type and provider, and account for setup cost and the coverage your home needs. Ofcom warns UK consumers that using their own router can be harder to set up and may not be supported by the provider (Ofcom broadband advice).

Mesh equipment can help with weak Wi-Fi coverage in a larger home, but it will not fix a failed WAN connection or an ISP outage. Ofcom notes that mesh can cost more and that using too many units can worsen problems. Treat it as a coverage option, not a storm-outage remedy (Ofcom broadband advice).
