If a website screenshot from headless Chrome looks too dark, first check whether the page is responding to prefers-color-scheme: dark. Explicitly request the light color scheme before capturing, then verify what the page sees. If the theme is already light, check the capture environment and whether the page finished rendering; screenshot transparency settings do not switch a site to light mode.
1. Check which color scheme the page sees
Sites commonly use the CSS media query prefers-color-scheme to choose light or dark styling. Headless Chrome does not guarantee that a page will use the light theme. Ask the page which preference is active before changing other screenshot options:

2. Force light mode before capturing
Playwright offers two ways to request light rendering. Set the preference when creating a browser context if every page in that context should use it; use page.emulateMedia() when you need page-level control or want a test to switch schemes. Set the preference before navigation and capture so the page can render against it.

Set light mode for the whole context

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });To verify after applying the setting, rerun the matchMedia check from the first section. Playwright also accepts dark; passing null resets color-scheme emulation. The Page API marks no-preference as deprecated, so prefer an explicit light or dark value.

Combined Playwright example
This combines the documented context setting, navigation, media-query check and capture. It is an example assembled from documented APIs, not a reported test result. Provide url and an already launched Playwright browser in your script:

await context.close();3. Keep transparency separate from the site theme
In Puppeteer, omitBackground hides the browser’s default white background so the screenshot can have transparency. It defaults to false and does not apply to JPEG. It does not set prefers-color-scheme or make a site use its light theme. Use the browser’s color-scheme emulation for the theme, and omitBackground only when you specifically want a transparent background. Details are in Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions reference.

4. Stabilize the page and capture environment
Wait for the page to reach the state you need
A screenshot taken while content is still loading may not represent the finished page. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigating with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' before capture:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });This is a useful starting point, not a universal guarantee: some sites keep network activity running, and the reviewed documentation does not establish one delay that works for every page. For dynamic content, wait for the specific content or state your capture needs rather than assuming a fixed pause is sufficient. See Puppeteer’s Screenshots guide.

Keep visual comparisons in the same environment
When the preference is light but screenshots still differ, compare captures using the same host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source and headless or headed mode. Playwright notes that all of these can affect rendering, and recommends using the same environment as the visual baseline. Its Visual comparisons guide explains the limitation.
Match viewport and device scale
Keep viewport and device scale settings consistent between captures. Playwright’s deviceScaleFactor is the device scale factor and defaults to 1. It can change output sampling and dimensions, but the documented material does not identify it as a correction for dark color rendering. See the BrowserType API for context options.

5. Troubleshoot persistent dark screenshots
