First determine whether the screenshot MCP server rejected the tool request or whether the capture succeeded and the target website displayed an access-denied page. Then use the exact error detail to check the right credential, project, workspace, or operation permission.
First identify where the 403 occurred
Check the MCP client’s full response, not just the status code. Note the server name and endpoint, whether the client reports an HTTP transport response, a structured tool error, or an OAuth denial, and whether the screenshot tool returned successfully.
- The MCP call itself failed: investigate the MCP endpoint’s authentication and authorization settings.
- The call succeeded but the image shows an access-denied page: investigate the target website’s access controls separately. A successful capture of a forbidden page is different from an MCP request rejected by the server.
This distinction is a practical diagnostic step; exact behavior and error reporting vary by provider. Google Developer Knowledge MCP, Microsoft Foundry, and screenshot-service documentation describe different sources of forbidden responses, so do not assume one provider’s fix applies to another. Check the endpoint and credential first
Confirm that the client is configured for the intended MCP endpoint and uses a transport the service supports. Verify that the required credential is sent on discovery and tool calls, is still active, and belongs to the project or workspace associated with that endpoint.

Do not guess the header format. Authentication conventions differ: ScreenshotEngine documents a bearer Authorization example, while Microsoft Playwright Workspaces specifies an x-api-key header containing the raw token, without a Bearer prefix. Using one service’s convention with another can cause authorization failures. Check the relevant vendor instructions, including Microsoft Playwright Workspaces documentation.
Match the error to the provider’s authorization model

- If the API has not been used for the project, enable the Developer Knowledge API.
- If the error says
API target restriction, update the API key’s allowed targets to include the API. - If Application Default Credentials (ADC) are being used and the error identifies a missing quota project, configure the
X-Goog-User-Projectheader. - If that header is present but the response is still 403, check whether the account has
roles/serviceusage.serviceUsageConsumeron the quota project. - If OAuth returns
access_deniedwhile the app is in external testing mode, add the account as a test user.
These are Google-specific cases, not requirements of the MCP protocol generally. Follow the error-specific instructions in Google’s MCP documentation.
Microsoft Foundry project access
If Microsoft Foundry returns Forbidden or Access denied, check the caller’s project IAM role assignment and whether that role grants the attempted operation. Microsoft notes that a newly assigned role may take time to propagate; if access was just changed, allow for propagation before retesting. See Microsoft Foundry guidance.

Tool-specific abilities and workspace ownership
A valid token may lack permission for the particular operation. ScreenshotBuddy documents tokens with operation abilities—for example, a token may allow screenshot capture but not PDF creation, producing a 403 when the disallowed tool is called. Check the service’s token scopes or abilities against the exact operation that failed; see ScreenshotBuddy documentation.
For Microsoft Playwright Workspaces, verify that the token owner can create browser sessions, use the same credential consistently, and avoid passing a session ID across users or workspaces. Retest without changing unrelated settings
- Record the original error text and the operation that produced it.
- Change the one setting indicated by the error, such as an API restriction, role assignment, test-user list, token ability, or workspace credential.
- If the client caches credentials or session state, reconnect or refresh authentication as appropriate for that client.
- Run one small test capture or repeat the same tool call. Compare the new response with the original.
If the 403 remains, give the service administrator the timestamp, endpoint, operation, request or correlation ID if available, and a redacted error body. Never include API keys, bearer tokens, or other secrets in logs or support requests. Retry and support procedures differ by service; follow that provider’s guidance.
