A Windows 10 update that pauses at a percentage has not necessarily failed: Microsoft says download time depends on connection speed, network settings, and update size. Start with power, internet, storage, and the Windows Update troubleshooter before trying repairs. Keep in mind that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date.
Before troubleshooting, protect your files and check the basics
Save open work. Before advanced repairs or recovery steps, back up personal files to a separate location. A USB flash drive can hold a copy of files or serve as recovery media, but it does not fix Windows Update itself. Disconnect unnecessary external drives before retrying an update.

- Connect the PC to power and confirm the internet connection is stable.
- Use an account with administrator access if the repair or update requires it.
- Unplug external storage, docks, and other hardware that is not needed to operate the PC.
- Check that the date and time are correct; incorrect clock settings can interfere with Windows Update.
- Verify that the system drive has enough free space.
For an upgrade, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide specifies at least 16 GB free for 32-bit Windows or 20 GB for 64-bit Windows. Those figures apply to the guide’s upgrade/storage context; they are not a universal minimum for every routine update.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 10, use the legacy Settings path:
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Under Get up and running, select Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and restart the PC when the troubleshooter finishes.
- Return to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Microsoft also describes an automated Windows 10 option through the Get Help app. See Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance for the current instructions.

What to do when the update is stuck at a percentage
Windows Update stuck at 0% or 100%
A reading at 0% or 100% alone does not establish that installation has failed. Restart the PC, check the internet connection, and confirm free space. If the progress remains unchanged, run the troubleshooter above and check for updates again.
Windows Update stuck at 51–99%
Microsoft says an update’s duration varies with connection speed, network settings, and update size. If the percentage remains unchanged rather than progressing, check again after allowing time for the update, or run the troubleshooter. Avoid repeatedly interrupting an installation that may still be working.
How to fix a Windows 10 update error code
Use the displayed code to choose a relevant next step rather than applying every repair. Microsoft’s mappings describe possible causes, not a certain diagnosis:
| Error code | Possible cause Microsoft identifies | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| 0x8007000d | Update files or cache corruption | Follow Microsoft’s instructions for the code; consider the cache reset below if the simpler steps fail. |
| 0x800705b4 | An update took too long or was interrupted | Check connectivity and retry after running the troubleshooter. |
| 0x80240034 | Incomplete update or connection issue | Check the connection, then retry Windows Update. |
| 0x800f0922 | Insufficient space or component issues | Check available storage and follow Microsoft’s code-specific guidance. |
| 0x800F081F, 0x80073712, 0x80246007 | Corrupted or missing files, or an incomplete download | Retry after the basic checks; use system-file repair only if simpler steps fail. |
| 0x80070422 | Windows Update service is disabled or stopped | Follow Microsoft’s instructions for checking the service. |
| 0x80070020 | Another program or process is blocking the update | Close unnecessary programs and retry; consult Microsoft’s code-specific steps if it persists. |

Reset the Windows Update cache if basic fixes fail
Do this only when simpler checks and the troubleshooter have not resolved a likely cache-related problem. Back up personal files first. Microsoft documents a Services-based method:
- Open Start, type
services.msc, and open Services. - Find and stop Windows Update.
- Delete the files inside
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Return to Services and start Windows Update again.
- Restart the PC and check for updates.
Microsoft also documents an advanced Command Prompt alternative that stops BITS and Windows Update, renames the SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 folders, restarts the services, and reboots. It requires administrator permissions; follow Microsoft’s exact commands rather than improvising them. See the Microsoft guide.
Repair Windows system files as a later step
Use these Microsoft-documented commands only if simpler troubleshooting has failed and you are comfortable with administrator-level command-line work. Open Command Prompt as an administrator, run each command separately, and let it finish before starting the next:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthsfc /scannow
When both complete, retry Windows Update. Microsoft’s guidance for these advanced procedures is available in its Windows Update troubleshooting article.

If Windows will not start after an update
If the problem began after a recent update and Windows no longer starts properly, Microsoft says uninstalling that update may help. Use Windows recovery options and try less disruptive options before Reset this PC, which is more disruptive. Back up personal files before repair or reset steps whenever possible. A recovery drive or manufacturer recovery media can support recovery preparation, but neither directly fixes an update that is merely stalled.
See Microsoft’s guidance on recovery options in Windows and creating a recovery drive.
What Windows 10 support ending means for updates
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft Support states: “After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.” Troubleshooting can address an update that fails to install, but it does not restore the ended support or guarantee ongoing free security fixes. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support-end notice.
