An Unsupported badge is not a diagnosis or an irreversible block. It means Valve does not currently consider the game playable on Steam Deck, and the Store page identifies the specific compatibility requirement that is not met. Read that detail first, then update SteamOS, restart, verify the files, and test an appropriate Proton version for Windows games. Check the game’s operating-system and hardware requirements before spending time on launch options. Reserve SteamOS recovery for system-wide faults, not one game that fails to start.
The sequence below is designed to separate a damaged installation, a Proton problem, an unmet requirement, and a broader Deck fault while keeping each change reversible.
What the Unsupported badge actually means
Valve’s Deck Verified system places games in four categories: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Valve describes the Unsupported image this way: “The game is currently not considered playable on Steam Deck.” That wording is important. It is a compatibility warning based on Valve’s current testing and requirements, not a statement that every installation will fail or that Steam has disabled the game.

| Category | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Verified | Valve’s checks indicate the game meets the Deck requirements tested for the rating. |
| Playable | The game can run, but Valve identifies one or more details that may require adjustment. |
| Unsupported | Valve does not currently consider the title playable on Steam Deck. |
| Unknown | Valve has not assigned a completed Deck compatibility assessment. |
Ratings can change when SteamOS, Proton, or the game itself is updated. An Unsupported rating can therefore describe the current state without predicting how a later release will behave. Conversely, a game that once launched can stop working after a game, Proton, driver, or SteamOS change.

Find the reason behind the rating
Open the game’s Steam Store page and expand Steam Deck Compatibility. Valve directs users to this section for Playable and Unsupported titles. Record the unmet item before changing settings. The detail may identify a launcher, controls, anti-cheat system, text legibility, performance, or an unsupported operating system. Those causes require different responses; treating the badge as if it always meant “choose another Proton version” wastes time.
Use this decision order before changing advanced settings
Work from the least disruptive test to the most consequential. The table shows what each stage is meant to establish and what it can affect.
| Stage | Scope | Evidence it provides | Data-risk profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Read compatibility detail | One game’s Store listing | Which requirement Valve says is unmet | No system change |
| Update, restart, disable Desktop Mode additions | Deck-wide software stability | Whether a stale OS or third-party application was involved | No reset or erase operation |
| Verify game files | One installation | Whether corruption or an incomplete download is present | Does not invoke SteamOS recovery |
| Force a Proton version | One Windows game | Whether the selected compatibility layer changes launch behavior | A reversible per-game compatibility setting |
| Check OS and hardware requirements | Game-versus-Deck fit | Whether the title supports the current platform at all | No software change |
| Try a launch option | One game’s startup command | Whether a video-setting or engine startup conflict is involved | Remove the option to undo it |
| Escalate with logs and versions | Title-specific or Deck-wide diagnosis | Information a developer, Proton maintainer, or Steam Support can act on | No local reset |
| SteamOS recovery | The operating-system installation | Whether the OS itself is corrupted or cannot boot | Reset and re-image actions can remove local data |
Step 1: Read the game’s compatibility detail
In Steam, navigate to the game’s Store page, open Steam Deck Compatibility, and write down the exact warning. Keep the wording available while you troubleshoot. “Launcher” points toward a separate startup program; “controls” suggests input mapping or an interface that was not designed for the Deck; “anti-cheat” can indicate a service that does not support the Deck environment; “text legibility” and “performance” describe usability rather than a corrupted install; and “unsupported operating system” is a platform limitation rather than a missing file.
This step also prevents a common mistake: assuming that an Unsupported badge identifies a single universal failure. Two games with the same badge can fail for entirely different reasons, and the appropriate fix for one may do nothing for the other.
Step 2: Update SteamOS, restart, and remove variables
Install every available Steam update
- Open Steam > Settings > System.
- Under software updates, install all updates offered by Steam.
- Allow the update to finish completely before launching the game again.
Updates can change the Steam client, SteamOS components, drivers, and Proton files that sit between the game and the hardware. Testing an old client after reading a new compatibility rating can produce a result that no longer reflects the current software.
Restart from the Steam menu
- Open the Steam menu.
- Select Power > Restart.
- After the Deck returns to the game mode interface, launch the title without changing another setting first.
A full restart clears a stuck client or background process and gives you a clean baseline. If the title launches after the restart, do not add launch options or swap Proton versions unnecessarily; keep the working configuration and test again only after a future update.
Temporarily disable Desktop Mode additions
Exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, then retry the game. Valve lists this as an early stability step because an overlay, compatibility utility, script, or background service can alter startup behavior. Disable only the additions you installed yourself; do not remove system components. If the game works with those applications disabled, re-enable them one at a time to identify the conflict.

Step 3: Verify the installation
Run Steam’s integrity check
- Open Library and highlight the affected game.
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the check and replace any damaged or incomplete files it can identify.
An immediate crash, a return to the library, or a game that never reaches its launcher can result from corruption or an incomplete download. Verification tests that possibility without changing your SteamOS installation.
Interpret a verification warning correctly
Steam may report that one or more files failed verification. Valve notes that local configuration files are intentionally not replaced, so that message alone does not prove the game is broken. Let Steam finish, launch the game once, and compare the result with the original failure. If the same crash remains, continue to the Proton and requirements checks rather than repeatedly verifying the same files.
Step 4: Test Proton deliberately for a Windows build
Force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool
- In Library, highlight the game and open Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose the latest Proton release available in the list.
- Close Properties and launch the game.
Valve documents this path for enabling Proton on a specific game. Proton translates many Windows game calls for SteamOS, but it is not a guarantee that every Windows-only title will run. A current Proton release is a sensible first test because it includes the latest compatibility fixes available to your Deck.
Understand what Steam may download
If the installation contains only a native Linux build, forcing Proton can cause Steam to download the Windows build instead. That download is expected behavior, not evidence that the Deck is damaged. Give Steam time to finish, then test the game. Do not change Proton versions and launch options simultaneously: change one variable, retest, and record the outcome so you know which setting mattered.

Proton can improve compatibility with Windows software, but it cannot make every title compatible. A game may depend on an anti-cheat service, launcher, operating-system feature, or hardware capability that the Deck does not provide. If the Store page identifies one of those requirements, a Proton swap may leave the failure unchanged even when Proton itself is functioning correctly.
Step 5: Check operating-system and hardware requirements
Compare the Store requirements with the Deck
Read the game’s listed operating-system and hardware requirements on its Store page. Check whether the title expects Windows-only components, a launcher that is not supported on the Deck, anti-cheat support, graphics features, or performance beyond what the hardware can deliver. The Unsupported detail and the formal requirements answer different questions: the first describes Valve’s compatibility assessment, while the second describes what the publisher expects from a platform.
Interpret “not available on your current platform”
Steam’s platform message says: “This error message means that the game is not supported on the operating system that you are currently using.” If you see that wording, treat it as an operating-system support issue rather than a damaged download. Proton may provide a path for some Windows games, but the message is a warning that the title does not natively support the OS currently running on the Deck.

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
Do not keep reinstalling a game whose requirements exclude the Deck. First determine whether the developer or community documents a supported Proton configuration. If no compatible path exists, the Unsupported badge is accurately describing a platform limitation.

Step 6: Use launch options only for a specific startup symptom
Enter an option in the correct place
- Open Library and select the game.
- Open Properties > General.
- Find the Launch Options field.
- Enter one option, close the dialog, and launch the game.
Valve describes launch options as a way to recover from incompatible video settings. Its examples include -autoconfig, -windowed, and -novid. These examples are not universal fixes. Many options in Valve’s documentation are specific to particular Valve engines, so copying them to an unrelated game can do nothing or make startup behavior worse.
Keep the test reversible
Use a launch option only when it matches the symptom—for example, a game that appears to start but fails while selecting a display mode. Remove the option if it changes nothing or worsens the launch. Test one option at a time and keep a note of the original field so you can return to a clean configuration.
Step 7: Escalate with evidence that others can use
Collect the minimum useful record
- The exact on-screen error or the point at which the game stops launching.
- The Proton version selected, if you forced Proton.
- The SteamOS version installed on the Deck.
- The complete text shown under Steam Deck Compatibility.
- Whether file verification completed and what Steam reported.
- Whether the game behaves differently after a restart or with Desktop Mode applications disabled.
This record distinguishes a title-specific compatibility failure from a Deck-wide software fault. It also prevents support staff from repeating steps you have already completed.
Choose the right support channel
For a Proton-specific failure, consult Steam Play community discussions and the Proton GitHub bug database, searching for the game name, the error text, and the Proton version. For a launcher, anti-cheat, control, or game-content problem, contact the game’s developer with the same details. Open a Steam Support ticket when Deck-wide troubleshooting is exhausted or when the client, SteamOS, or installation process itself appears to be failing.
Include the evidence in the first message rather than reporting only “Unsupported will not launch.” A developer can investigate a title-specific defect; Steam Support can investigate a client or platform problem; Proton maintainers need the compatibility-layer version and a reproducible symptom.

Know the available recovery actions
Valve documents several SteamOS recovery choices: rollback, factory reset, erase-user-data, and re-image or repair. These tools address broad operating-system corruption, repeated failures across many games, or a Deck that cannot boot normally. They are not the first response to one game carrying an Unsupported badge.

Why recovery is a last resort
Reset and re-image actions can remove local data. Using them to chase a single title can turn a game-compatibility problem into a data-recovery problem without changing the title’s operating-system, anti-cheat, launcher, or hardware requirements. Before selecting any destructive option, confirm that multiple unrelated games or core Steam functions are failing and that ordinary updates, restart, file verification, and support escalation have not resolved the broader fault.
Common failure patterns and the next test
The game returns to the library immediately
Start with updates, a restart, and file verification. If the installation is intact, test the latest Proton release for a Windows build. An immediate return with an anti-cheat or launcher warning in the compatibility detail points toward a title-specific limitation rather than a missing local file.

Steam remains on “Preparing to Launch”
Complete the update and restart sequence, then verify the files. If the game is Windows-only, force Proton and wait for any required build download to finish. If the loop continues, record the Proton and SteamOS versions and escalate instead of repeatedly restarting the same download.
The game opens but is unusable
A controls, text-legibility, or performance warning describes usability that may not meet Deck expectations even when the executable starts. Check the compatibility detail and hardware requirements. A launch option such as -windowed is appropriate only when the symptom is an incompatible display mode; it is not a general solution for unsupported controls or anti-cheat.
Only this game fails
Keep the investigation at the game level: compatibility detail, file verification, Proton selection, requirements, and developer or Proton support. Do not reset SteamOS for an isolated title failure.
Many games fail after an update
Look beyond the individual game. Install SteamOS updates, restart, disable Desktop Mode additions, and document the SteamOS version and the games affected. If failures span unrelated titles or the Deck has boot problems, Steam Support and the documented recovery options become more relevant than per-game launch options.

It is a practical hard stop when the unmet requirement is an operating system, anti-cheat service, launcher, or hardware capability that the Deck cannot provide and no supported Proton path is documented. It is not a hard stop when the detail points to a reversible configuration issue, a damaged download, or a Proton version that has not yet been tested. The Store page’s compatibility text, not the badge alone, tells you which case you have.
Follow the sequence in order, change one setting at a time, and stop when the evidence shows a platform limitation rather than a fixable local fault. That approach gives you the best chance of launching the game without risking the rest of the Deck.
