Start with SteamOS updates, a full restart, and a test with third-party apps or overlays disabled. If the game still fails, check its Deck Verified rating, verify the installed files, and test an appropriate Proton version for Windows games. When a game launches but stutters, lower the graphics preset and then the most demanding individual settings. This order separates corrupted files, compatibility problems, software conflicts, and excessive system load without changing several variables at once.
Use this order to identify the problem
A Steam Deck title can fail before its window appears, hang at Preparing to Launch, or start normally and then stutter. Each symptom points to a different class of fault, but the safest diagnosis is sequential: change one condition, retest, and record the result. Do not assume that a game marked playable will behave like a Verified title, or that one Proton release is best for every Windows game.

Install SteamOS updates and restart
Valve’s first-line remedy for system instability is to install available SteamOS updates and restart the Deck. An update can replace a broken runtime component, while a restart clears processes left behind by a previous game or desktop application.

- Open Steam and choose Settings.
- Select System, then Software Updates.
- Install every available SteamOS update and wait for the device to finish applying it.
- Open the Steam menu, choose Power, and select Restart.
- After the Deck returns to Gaming Mode, launch the problem game before opening other applications.
If you installed utilities, launchers, overlays, or other software through Desktop Mode, exit or disable non-essential items for this test. A clean restart is important: merely closing the game does not necessarily stop a background process that can interfere with launching.

Read the Deck Verified rating as a diagnostic clue
On the game’s Steam store or Library page, inspect the Deck Verified badge. Valve uses three categories:

The badge describes expected compatibility and configuration effort, not a permanent guarantee for every build, save, server, or peripheral. A Verified title can break after a game update, and a Playable title can work well once its documented manual step is completed. Note the badge when reporting a problem so support can reproduce the same expectation.
Verify the installed game files
Steam identifies corruption in extracted game files as a common reason a title will not launch. Verification compares the local installation with Steam’s known content and replaces missing or damaged data. It does not erase your cloud saves, but it can redownload files, so use a stable connection and allow the process to finish.
- Open Library and highlight the affected game.
- Open the game’s gear or menu button and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the scan and any download, then restart the game.
Steam may report that one or more files failed verification even after a successful repair. Some files are local configuration files that should not be replaced; that message alone does not prove the installation is still broken. The useful test is whether the game launches after Steam finishes its corrective download.

Choose and test a Proton version for Windows games
Windows games running through Steam Play use Proton, Valve’s compatibility tool. If a Linux-native build is installed, forcing Proton can cause Steam to download the Windows version instead, so check the download size and installed content before proceeding.
- From the game’s Library page, open the gear or menu and select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton version shown as installed or available, then close the dialog and launch the game.
- If the problem began after a game or Proton update, repeat the test with another installed Proton version and record the result.
Do not pick a version solely because it is newest. Compare each test on the factors that matter to your title:

Change only the Proton selection during this comparison. If one release fixes the launch while another fixes graphics or online access, keep the version that meets the game’s actual requirement and document it for future troubleshooting.

A game that starts and then stutters is usually a load problem rather than a launch problem. Valve recommends first selecting a lower graphics preset or adjusting individual settings to decrease system load. Apply the broad preset before fine-tuning so you can tell whether the overall workload is the cause.

- Set the game’s overall preset to Low or the next lower option.
- Retest the same area or activity that stuttered; use a repeatable save or location.
- If performance improves, raise one setting at a time, beginning with the least costly visual option.
- If stutter remains, lower resolution or render scale, then shadows, effects, and view distance.
- Choose a frame-rate target the Deck can hold consistently rather than one it reaches only in quiet scenes.
Judge the result by frame-rate consistency, image quality, battery impact, and text legibility. A setting that produces a higher peak but frequent drops is usually worse than a lower, steady target. Check the game’s stated system requirements and its Linux or Proton support as well; titles near or below their requirements can have both launch and performance problems.
Remove software conflicts and retest cleanly
Steam lists interfering software as a possible cause of an immediate launch failure. Overlays, performance monitors, custom launchers, and desktop utilities can hook into a game before its window appears. Disable non-essential third-party applications and overlays, restart the Deck, and test the title again.
- Close applications installed or started from Desktop Mode.
- Disable overlays and injectors that are not required by the game.
- Do not change Proton, graphics settings, and background software in the same test; otherwise you will not know which change helped.
- After the clean test, re-enable tools one at a time if you need them, launching the game after each change.
If the game works only with a particular utility disabled, keep that finding in your notes and check whether an updated version of the utility is available. The goal is to identify the conflict, not to remove every tool permanently.

Use a symptom-specific decision path
It returns to the Library immediately
Complete the update and restart steps, disable third-party software, and verify the files. If it is a Windows title, test Proton versions after the file check. A return to Library with no message is useful evidence: record whether the game displayed a launcher, a splash screen, or nothing at all.

It stays on “Preparing to Launch”
Restart first, then verify the installation. Check whether Steam is downloading a required runtime or Windows build after you forced Proton. If the title recently worked, test another installed Proton release and note exactly which one changes the behavior.
The launcher opens but controls do not work
Check whether the title is Playable rather than Verified. Some games expect mouse, touchscreen, or keyboard input in their launcher even though gameplay supports a controller. Follow the game’s required manual configuration before treating the failure as a crash.
It crashes after a few minutes
Lower the preset and demanding settings, then test without overlays or background utilities. If the crash appears only in one game, verify files and compare Proton versions; if several games fail after the same SteamOS change, prioritize system updates and support evidence.
It runs, but text is unreadable or the image is too soft
Raise resolution or render scale only after establishing a stable frame-rate target. If that causes renewed stutter, keep the lower workload and increase text or interface scale inside the game where available instead of raising every graphics option.

Keep a reproducible test record
Write down the information that changes between tests. This prevents circular troubleshooting and gives Steam Community discussions or Steam Support enough context to identify a title-specific issue.
- Exact error text, including capitalization and numbers.
- Deck Verified category shown for the game.
- SteamOS version installed when the failure occurred.
- Proton version selected, or confirmation that the default tool was used.
- Whether the game is installed on internal storage or a removable card.
- Whether verification found and downloaded replacement content.
- Whether disabling third-party applications changed the result.
- The graphics preset, resolution or render scale, and frame-rate target used for performance tests.
- The game version or the date on which the problem began, if known.
Use the same save, level, or menu when comparing performance. A different scene can have a different workload, making an apparent fix misleading.
When to escalate to Steam Community or Support
Escalate after updates, a restart, a clean software test, file verification, and the relevant Proton or graphics tests fail. Valve directs unresolved users to the game’s Steam Community discussions and Steam Support. Search discussions for the exact error and current game version rather than relying on an old workaround.

- Run Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- For a Windows game, use Properties > Compatibility and test the latest Proton version, then another installed version if needed.
- For poor performance, lower the preset and then resolution, shadows, effects, view distance, or the frame-rate target.
- Record the error and configuration, then use Steam Community or Steam Support if the failure persists.
