Start with the low-risk fixes: install every SteamOS update, restart the Deck, and close third-party Desktop Mode applications. Then check the game’s Deck Verified details and system requirements, verify its files, and select a Proton version for Windows games. For stuttering or low frame rates, lower the heaviest graphics settings and watch the performance overlay to find the limiting resource. Use launch options and Proton logs only for a specific, understood symptom; if the staged checks fail, give Steam Support precise version and error details.
This order matters. It separates a temporary client problem from a compatibility limitation, damaged files, a Proton regression, or hardware that is simply being asked to do too much. Change one meaningful variable at a time and keep notes, so you can return to the last configuration that worked.
Use this order before changing advanced settings
A Steam Deck game can fail because of a temporary SteamOS or Steam client problem, a compatibility limitation, damaged game data, an unsuitable Proton build, or settings that overload the hardware. Changing several things at once makes it difficult to identify the cause. Work through these checks in order and retest after each meaningful change.
- Update SteamOS: open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install every available update.
- Restart the Deck: choose Steam > Power > Restart after the update has finished.
- Close Desktop Mode extras: before restarting, exit or temporarily disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode. Background overlays, tuners, launchers, and scripts can interfere with the Steam client or a game.
- Retest the game without other changes: launch it from the normal Library entry and note exactly what happens: an immediate return to Play, a crash after a launcher, missing video or audio, a “Preparing to Launch” loop, or a game that starts but runs poorly.
Steam Support recommends updates, a restart, and disabling third-party applications as the first stability step because it clears transient client, runtime, and background-process problems without altering the game installation.

Make the first test repeatable
Use the same launch path and, for a performance issue, the same save or demanding scene each time. Note whether the failure happens before a window appears, after a publisher or account launcher, at the first loading screen, or only after entering a world. Record whether the Deck is online, whether a game update is pending, and whether the behavior changed after waking from sleep. These observations are more useful than a general report that the game “doesn’t work.”
Check whether the game is supported on Steam Deck
Open the game’s Store page or Library compatibility details before forcing a runtime or copying launch commands from a community post. Valve uses four labels, and each describes a different starting point rather than a permanent guarantee.
| Label | What Valve’s review means | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game works well on Steam Deck out of the box. Review criteria include support for the Deck’s default 1280×800 or 1280×720 resolution, sensible default settings, legible text, controller input, a seamless launcher experience, and Proton support for the game and its middleware. | Use the default configuration first. If it fails, treat the failure as a problem to isolate rather than assuming a special tweak is required. |
| Playable | The game runs, but may require manual user adjustments. The details can identify a launcher, input, display, text, or other limitation. | Read each warning and apply only the adjustment it calls for. A Playable title may need a different Proton build or graphics settings. |
| Unsupported | Valve currently classifies the game as not functional on Steam Deck. | Do not expect lower graphics settings to make it compatible. You can look for a later compatibility change, but there is no supported configuration that guarantees it will run. |
| Unknown | The title has not been checked by Valve’s compatibility review. | Use the game’s requirements, its runtime (native Linux or Windows through Proton), and reproducible testing to judge it. Unknown is not the same as working or broken. |
Read the detailed compatibility notes
Select the compatibility label to see why the game received it. Notes about a separate launcher, controller navigation, a nonstandard resolution, video playback, or middleware are more useful than the label alone. Compatibility is ongoing: game updates are published every day, and improvements to Steam Deck or Proton can make a previously Unsupported title playable. Record the date and label when troubleshooting because the result can change after an update.
Do not read “Verified” as a promise of a particular frame rate or visual preset. It means Valve found the title works well with the Deck’s normal experience. Conversely, “Playable” does not mean that every user will encounter a problem; it means the review found a manual adjustment may be needed. “Unknown” simply means there is no Valve review to rely on, so requirements and observed behavior matter more.
Confirm requirements and the installation state
Compare the store requirements realistically
Read the game’s store-page system requirements and compare them with the Deck and the workload you are asking it to run. A computer at or near a game’s minimum requirements may experience launch or performance problems; “meets minimum” is not a frame-rate promise. A demanding game can start successfully and still suffer sustained low frame rates, shader-compilation hitches, or slow scene loading.
Use the requirements as a warning threshold, not a pass/fail certificate. A game may list a minimum operating system, processor, graphics device, memory amount, or storage requirement that does not describe the exact workload of a busy scene. Also distinguish a game that fails immediately from one that launches and then cannot maintain acceptable frame pacing; the first points toward compatibility or files, while the second often points toward settings or system load.
Check for updates and file problems
Let Steam finish any pending game update before changing compatibility settings. If the game’s Properties page offers a file-integrity or update action, run it and wait for the result. This is the appropriate check for missing or damaged data.

After the check, launch once with the normal configuration. If Steam reports repaired or reacquired files, retest before selecting another Proton build. If it reports no problem, move to compatibility and runtime checks rather than repeating the same verification indefinitely.
Do not treat a reinstall as a universal fix. Reinstall only after updates and file checks indicate damaged or missing data, or when Steam Support directs you to do so. Reinstalling a title that is Unsupported, blocked by a launcher, or limited by hardware does not change that underlying condition.
Choose a Proton version for a Windows game
Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows-exclusive games on Linux. A Windows build may work with the Steam-supplied default Proton version, while another build fixes a regression or introduces a different incompatibility. Change one version at a time and keep a record of the result.
- In Library, highlight the game.
- Press the Deck’s Menu button.
- Choose Properties > Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton build supplied by Steam, then close Properties and launch the game.
- If it still fails, return to the same menu and test another installed Proton build individually. Note the exact build and the symptom it changes.
Start with the latest supplied build because it includes current fixes, but do not assume it is best for every title. If an older installed build is the only one that launches reliably, leave that build selected and retest after a game or SteamOS update. A Proton change can solve a launch regression while creating a different issue, such as a broken launcher, missing media, or controller behavior.
Test the default or latest build first, then make a small comparison table for any alternatives: Proton version, whether the game reaches the menu, whether video and audio work, controller behavior, and performance in the same scene. Stop when you have a reproducible working choice. Installing or testing every available build at random adds variables without improving the diagnosis.
| Runtime path | Typical decision | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Native Linux build | Use the game’s default Steam configuration unless its compatibility notes specify a problem. | Game version, SteamOS version, and the exact failure point. |
| Windows build through Proton | Try the latest Steam-supplied Proton, then one other installed build at a time if needed. | Each Proton build tested and whether it launched, crashed, or changed performance. |
Fix stuttering, low frame rates, and slow rendering
For a game that launches but performs badly, first reduce the workload instead of adding launch commands. Start with the game’s Steam Deck preset if one is provided. If it has no Deck preset, lower the overall graphics preset and then the most expensive individual options.
Lower the settings that usually cost the most
- Reduce resolution or render scale if the game offers those controls.
- Lower shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, ambient occlusion, and view distance before reducing texture quality. Texture reductions can help memory pressure, but they may make the image less clear without fixing a CPU bottleneck.
- Reduce crowd density, simulation distance, or physics quality in a CPU-limited game.
- Disable expensive ray-tracing features when present.
- Use a sensible frame-rate cap if frame pacing is unstable. A lower, consistent target is preferable to an uncapped rate that repeatedly hits a limit.
Apply one group of changes, play the same demanding scene, and compare. A setting that improves an indoor scene may not solve a busy outdoor area, so test a repeatable location rather than relying on the first few seconds after launch.

Prioritize image-quality settings according to the bottleneck. Resolution, render scale, lighting, reflections, volumetrics, and shadows generally affect the GPU most. Crowd counts, simulation distance, and physics can burden the CPU. Texture quality primarily changes memory use and clarity. This is a comparison method, not a guarantee that every game assigns the same cost to every option.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use the performance overlay to identify the limit
Open the Deck’s performance overlay from the Quick Access menu and watch it while reproducing the hitch or slow section. The overlay helps distinguish a frame-rate cap from a saturated CPU or GPU, thermal behavior, or a short shader-compilation hitch. If the GPU is continuously busy, lower resolution and visual effects first. If the CPU is the limit, reduce simulation, crowd, or view-distance settings. If neither is saturated and the hitch occurs only when new effects appear, it may be shader compilation rather than a setting that can be eliminated entirely.
Compare sustained behavior with a brief spike. A momentary hitch while a new effect is compiled is different from a low frame rate that persists through the entire scene. Run the same route after changing one setting and watch frame pacing, not just the highest number shown. A cap can make delivery more consistent, but it cannot remove a bottleneck that occurs below that cap.
Lowering settings creates more load headroom; it cannot make an Unsupported game compatible. A Playable game may still need the manual setting described in its compatibility note even after its graphics load is reduced.
Use launch options only for a known symptom
Steam launch options can help recover from incompatible video settings and troubleshoot a broad range of issues, but random environment variables copied from posts can mask the original problem. Use one option, test it, and remove it if it produces no measurable improvement.

Recover from a bad video configuration
When a game immediately crashes after a graphics change, use the game’s Properties page and its Launch Options field to apply the specific recovery option documented for that game or by Steam Support. Clear the field after the game starts and reset the in-game setting normally. Do not leave an unneeded option active across updates.
Create a Proton diagnostic log
For a Windows title that fails under Proton and needs support-level diagnosis, open Library > game > Menu > Properties, enter the documented variable in Launch Options, and launch the game. Proton documents this form:

PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
The variable must appear before %command%. Proton writes a debug log that can help identify the failing runtime, launcher, or middleware. Remove the option after collecting the log; it is a diagnostic switch, not a performance tweak. Share the log only with a support channel that requests it, and include the game and Proton versions so the output has context.
Do not combine the log variable with several untested options. A clean run with only the logging switch gives support a clearer record of what happened. If the game launches normally without the switch, compare that result and remove the switch rather than assuming the log itself fixed anything.
Match the fix to the symptom
| Observed symptom | Most useful next check | Avoid doing first |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate return to Play | Update and restart; read the compatibility notes; verify files; then test Proton builds for a Windows title. | Stacking launch options or reinstalling before the file check. |
| Stuck on “Preparing to Launch” | Close Desktop Mode applications, restart, complete pending Steam and game updates, and test the latest Proton build if applicable. | Assuming the title is compatible because it reaches the preparation screen. |
| Crash after a separate launcher appears | Read the Playable/Verified note for launcher requirements and test the Proton build associated with the working result. | Changing graphics settings that the launcher never reaches. |
| Missing video, audio, or media playback | Check compatibility details for middleware and media notes, then compare another Proton build. | Adding unrelated performance variables. |
| Persistent low frame rate | Lower the preset and expensive settings, reproduce the same scene, and watch CPU/GPU behavior in the overlay. | Expecting a compatibility label to guarantee a particular frame rate. |
| Short hitches when new effects appear | Retest after shaders have had time to compile and compare frame pacing in the same area. | Declaring the game permanently broken from one brief hitch. |
Separate launch, compatibility, and performance failures
A title that never reaches its menu has a different decision path from one that reaches gameplay but renders slowly. For a launch failure, prioritize updates, restart, compatibility notes, files, and Proton. For a performance failure, keep the working runtime and change graphics load while observing the overlay. For a launcher or media failure, read the middleware notes and compare Proton builds before touching image-quality settings.

Escalate after you have installed updates, restarted, reviewed the compatibility details, checked requirements and files, tested an appropriate Proton build, and reduced graphics load where relevant. Steam Support can act more quickly when the report is reproducible and specific.
Include:
- The exact game name and whether it is native Linux or running through Proton.
- Your Steam Deck model and SteamOS version.
- The current compatibility label and the detailed warning text.
- The Proton build selected and every other build you tested.
- The exact failure point, such as an immediate return to Play, a launcher crash, missing media, or a frame-rate drop in a repeatable scene.
- Whether the problem began after a game, Proton, or SteamOS update.
- The result of the file-integrity check and any error text.
- A Proton log when support requests one, generated with
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%.
For Steam Play-specific issues, Steam’s launch guidance also points users to community discussions and Valve’s Proton bug database. Treat anecdotal tweaks there as experiments: prefer a reproducible setting and change only one variable at a time.
Include timestamps or dates when they clarify the change, such as “worked on the previous Proton build, failed after the game update.” A short reproduction recipe—open the game, choose a save, enter a named area, then observe the crash—helps distinguish a universal launch failure from a scene-specific performance problem.

Keep a working configuration stable
Once a title launches and performs acceptably, write down its SteamOS version, game version, Proton build, frame-rate cap, and key graphics settings. Avoid changing several of these before an update, because a later regression is easier to identify when you have a known-good baseline. Revisit a forced Proton selection after game or SteamOS updates; the build that fixed an earlier regression may no longer be necessary, while a new update may require a different one.

Compatibility labels and behavior are time-sensitive. A Verified result describes Valve’s current review, not a lifetime guarantee, and an Unknown or Unsupported result can change as the game, Proton, or SteamOS is updated. Keep the troubleshooting record tied to the date and versions you actually tested.
Quick decision checklist
- Install SteamOS and game updates.
- Close third-party Desktop Mode applications and restart.
- Read the current Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown details.
- Compare store requirements and complete Steam’s file-integrity check.
- For a Windows title, test the latest supplied Proton, then one alternative at a time.
- For poor performance, lower the preset or costliest settings and reproduce the same scene with the overlay visible.
- Use a documented launch option or
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%only when the symptom calls for it. - Send Steam Support the versions, exact failure point, tests performed, and requested logs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my Steam Deck game launch?
Install SteamOS and game updates, restart the Deck, close third-party Desktop Mode applications, read the game’s compatibility details, check its files, and test an appropriate Proton build if it is a Windows title. Note whether it returns to Play immediately, crashes at a launcher, or fails later; each points to a different next check.
How do I fix a Steam Deck game stuck on “Preparing to Launch”?
Close Desktop Mode applications, finish pending Steam and game updates, restart, and launch again. If the game uses Windows through Proton, test the latest Steam-supplied Proton build and then another installed build individually. Reaching the preparation screen does not prove that the title is compatible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Which Proton version should I use?
Start with the latest Proton build supplied by Steam. If it fails, test another installed build one at a time and record the result. Keep the version that reliably launches, then revisit that choice after a game or SteamOS update because a newer build may fix the problem or introduce a different incompatibility.
Why is my Steam Deck game stuttering or running badly?
Lower the Steam Deck preset or the most expensive individual settings, reproduce the same scene, and watch the performance overlay. GPU load usually calls for lower resolution or visual effects; CPU load may call for lower crowd, simulation, or view-distance settings. Brief hitches when new effects appear can be shader compilation rather than a permanent frame-rate limit.
Is an Unsupported game impossible to run on Steam Deck?
Unsupported means Valve currently classifies the title as not functional on Steam Deck, so lower graphics settings cannot be expected to make it compatible. Compatibility reviews and game updates are ongoing, and a later change can alter the label, but there is no supported configuration that guarantees an Unsupported title will run.
Does Verified guarantee a specific frame rate?
No. Verified means Valve found the game works well out of the box under criteria such as supported Deck resolutions, sensible defaults, readable text, controller input, launcher behavior, and Proton or middleware support. It is not a promise of a particular frame rate in every scene.
Recommended Free Tools
When should I reinstall a Steam Deck game?
Only consider reinstalling after updates and Steam’s file-integrity check indicate damaged or missing data, or when Steam Support directs you to do so. Reinstalling does not fix an Unsupported classification, a launcher limitation, an unsuitable Proton build, or hardware that is overloaded.
The Bottom Line
Update, restart, and remove Desktop Mode variables first. Then use the compatibility label, requirements, file check, Proton comparison, and performance overlay to identify the actual limit. Change one setting at a time, keep a known-good configuration, and give Steam Support exact versions and reproducible symptoms when the problem remains.
