If your sleep tracker is missing a night, shifting your bedtime, or changing its sleep-stage estimates, start with the basics: confirm you wore it correctly, check its charge and tracking settings, sync it, and update its app or firmware. Then inspect sensor contact and look for a known issue for your exact device and software version. A tracker estimates sleep; it is not a medical diagnostic tool, and changing sleep-stage results do not necessarily mean the device is broken.
First identify what is inconsistent
Different symptoms point to different causes. A completely missing night is not the same problem as a changing REM estimate or a gap in heart-rate data.
- No sleep record: Check whether the tracker was worn, had power, recorded data, and synced with its app.
- Wrong bedtime or wake time: Review the device’s sleep-tracking setup and whether movement or disrupted sleep may have affected detection.
- Changing sleep stages or score: Treat these as estimates, and compare patterns over multiple nights rather than judging the device on one result.
- Gaps in heart-rate or oxygen readings: Check fit, sensor contact, skin condition, and any device-specific sensor instructions.
Work through the basic checks
1. Confirm overnight wear, fit, and charge
Make sure you wore the device overnight and placed it as its maker directs. A loose or poorly positioned sensor can interfere with readings; a device that is too tight can be uncomfortable, so do not tighten it beyond the manufacturer’s guidance. Also check that it had enough battery to record the night.
For Oura specifically, its guidance recommends charging to at least 30% before bed and syncing daily. Those figures are Oura-specific, not universal requirements for other trackers. Oura also lists power loss, not wearing the ring, short sleep periods, movement or disrupted sleep, unsynced data, software glitches, and possible hardware problems among reasons sleep data may be missing: Oura’s troubleshooting guidance.

2. Check tracking settings and connection
Confirm that sleep tracking is enabled and that the device and phone can communicate. Open the companion app and sync the tracker; then check whether the missing data appears. If the device requires a particular sleep mode, schedule, or other setting, verify that it was active for the night in question.
Requirements can differ by feature and model. For example, Apple’s wrist-temperature data require a supported Apple Watch, enabled sleep tracking, and Sleep Focus for the specified duration. Apple describes the feature’s requirements and limitations here: Apple’s wrist-temperature guidance.
3. Inspect sensor contact and the wearing surface
Check that the sensor area and the skin beneath it are clean and dry, and that the device sits in the position its maker recommends. Garmin notes that optical heart-rate readings can be affected by interference and advises a snug fit with minimal movement. Apple also notes that a loose fit can affect wrist-temperature data. Use the instructions for your own model rather than applying one brand’s fit rules to every device.
For Garmin’s Index Sleep Monitor specifically, the manual recommends cleaning and drying the arm, positioning the band at heart level, keeping sunscreen, lotion, and insect repellent away from the band area, and avoiding scratches to the optical sensor when pulse-oximeter data are erratic or absent. These are model-specific instructions, not universal advice: Garmin Index Sleep Monitor Owner’s Manual.

4. Update the app and device software
Install available updates for the companion app and the tracker, then sync again. Before assuming a hardware failure, search the manufacturer’s known-issues page using the exact device model, phone platform, and software version. Issue lists can document data problems tied to a particular configuration, but a listed issue applies only to the versions and status identified by the manufacturer. Oura’s issue page, for example, identifies affected versions and whether issues are open or fixed: Oura Known Issues.
5. Check whether movement or other factors may explain the result
Restless movement can interfere with sleep-stage detection, and Oura notes that some movement disorders may appear as awake time. Oura also cautions that arrhythmias and circulation issues can affect some readings. These possibilities do not establish what happened in an individual night; they are reasons not to interpret a single unusual result as a definitive account of your sleep.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why sleep-stage readings can change even when the tracker works
Consumer wearables infer sleep from sensors and algorithms; they do not measure sleep in the same way as an overnight polysomnography (PSG) study. A 2024 study in Sensors compared Oura, Fitbit, and Apple devices with PSG in healthy adults. Its reported intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) varied by metric:
| Metric | Study-reported ICC range | Agreement reported by the study |
|---|---|---|
| Total sleep time | 0.56–0.85 | Fair to excellent |
| Light sleep | 0.37–0.52 | Poor to fair |
| Deep sleep | 0.13–0.36 | Poor |
| REM sleep | 0.13–0.37 | Poor |
| Sleep latency | 0.94–0.95 | Excellent |
| Wake after sleep onset (WASO) | 0.41–0.72 | Fair to good |
These are results for the devices and healthy-adult sample in that study, not a guarantee for every tracker, software version, health condition, or wearer. The study does not justify ranking brands overall. Its findings do show why stage estimates deserve more caution than a broad trend in total sleep time. For practical use, compare your own readings across several nights and focus on recurring patterns rather than treating one stage breakdown as exact. Do not use a tracker’s estimate to diagnose a sleep disorder or change prescribed care. Apple says its wrist-temperature feature is not intended for medical diagnosis or treatment; persistent health concerns should be discussed with a qualified health professional.
When to contact the manufacturer
Contact the device maker if full nights remain missing, sensor readings repeatedly disappear, or syncing continues to fail after you have checked wear, charge, settings, connection, and software. Oura recommends contacting support when sleep data remain consistently missing for several nights after its suggested steps; for other devices, use the maker’s corresponding support route. Hardware service may be appropriate once basic wear and software causes have been ruled out.
If the tracker records data but its sleep stages or score do not match how you felt, that difference alone does not establish a device fault. Use the device’s support channel for persistent technical failures and a qualified health professional for ongoing symptoms or health concerns.
