If that fails, use a wired connection and try the normal update screen; then move to Safe Mode or Sony’s official USB update. Reinstalling system software is a separate, last-resort option that deletes all console data.
1. Retry the failed update from Downloads/Uploads
-
Press the PS button to open the control center, then select Downloads/Uploads.
-
Highlight the system software update and select View Error Info to see the reported error.
-
Select Try Again.
If the download fails multiple times, move on to the computer-and-USB method rather than repeatedly retrying. Sony’s steps are on its PS5 system software update page.

- Vertical Stand sold seperately
2. Try the normal update over a wired connection
If the PS5 still reaches the home screen, connect it to your router with a LAN cable where possible. Then go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and select Update System Software. This is preferable to recovery options when the console is usable because it does not require reinstalling system software.
3. Update the PS5 through Safe Mode
Safe Mode offers a way to update when ordinary access is limited. Sony supports updating directly over the internet from Safe Mode, as well as updating from USB storage.
-
Turn off the PS5 completely.
-
Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, which Sony says sounds about seven seconds after the first.

5. Reinstall only as a last resort
Warning: Reinstalling system software deletes all data on the PS5. Back up your data first if possible, and do not treat reinstallation as an ordinary update retry.
Sony’s reinstallation procedure uses a separate reinstallation file—not the regular update file—and the Safe Mode option Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). Follow Sony’s official reinstallation instructions carefully. PlayStation Support states: “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.”
6. Check the error code or contact support
Use the exact code shown on the console to look up the relevant guidance in Sony’s PS5 error code index. It lists CE-113338-9 for an error while updating PS5 system software and CE-109737-7 for USB storage not being recognized. A different download, account, or network error code does not by itself establish that the system software is corrupt.
If the official manual update fails, the PS5 cannot enter Safe Mode, or the problem continues, use PlayStation Repairs diagnostics and support for next steps. Repair options and eligibility depend on the console and region.

Do not interrupt an installation
Once installation begins, leave the console powered on and do not disconnect it. PlayStation Support warns: “Don’t turn off your console during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause your console to be damaged.”
