A PS5 disc problem usually falls into one of three groups: the disc is inserted incorrectly or dirty, the console recognizes the disc but cannot install it, or several known-good discs fail and the drive may need service. Work through the checks in that order. Clean and compare more than one compatible disc before assuming the drive is broken, and use the manual-eject procedure rather than pulling a stuck disc.
Identify which problem you have
The symptom determines the safest first move. A disc that is not recognized needs a physical-media and drive check; a recognized disc that stops during copying needs an installation and storage check.

1. Confirm the physical setup before testing
Fully shut down the PS5 before handling the drive. Do not troubleshoot with the console running or with a disc being inserted and removed repeatedly while the system is operating.
Insert a disc in the correct orientation
When the PS5 is standing vertically on its stand, insert the disc with its labeled side facing left. If the label is facing the other way, remove the disc and insert it again in the correct orientation. After each troubleshooting step, remove and reinsert the disc before deciding whether the step worked.

If the console is positioned differently from the vertical arrangement described above, do not guess at the orientation. Check the model’s physical markings and the official setup instructions before inserting another disc.
Check for obvious physical damage
- Look for fingerprints, dust, cracks, deep scratches, or a visibly warped disc.
- Do not use a cracked or badly damaged disc as your only diagnostic test; it cannot distinguish a media fault from a console fault.
- Keep the console stable while you insert or remove media.
2. Clean the disc and compare several types of media
Clean from the center toward the edge
Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth intended for Blu-ray or DVD media. Wipe in straight strokes from the center hole toward the outside edge. Avoid rubbing in circles, and hold the disc by its edge so you do not add fingerprints to the readable surface. Reinsert the cleaned disc and test it.
Cleaning is a low-risk first action, not a guaranteed repair for a failing drive. If the disc has a crack or substantial scratch, use a different, undamaged disc for diagnosis.

Try a second commercial game. If available, also try a commercial Blu-ray disc and a DVD. The comparison is more informative than repeatedly trying one title:

PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. Those formats are not valid tests of the console’s game-disc drive, so a failure with them does not establish a hardware defect.
3. Separate a reading failure from an installation failure
When the PS5 does not recognize the disc
Stay with the physical checks in the previous sections: verify orientation, clean the media, and compare multiple commercial discs. A single failed disc should not be used to justify a replacement drive. A pattern across several undamaged, compatible discs is more significant, but only a service inspection can confirm the hardware cause.
When the disc is recognized but the game will not install
Recognition and installation are different stages. The console can identify a disc and still stop while copying its data. Confirm that the installation is directed to the PS5 console itself, then verify that sufficient free storage is available for the installation. Free space must be checked on the destination selected by the console, not assumed from the capacity printed on an external device or another storage location.

What to do about error CE-100005-6
If CE-100005-6 appears while a disc game is being installed, treat it as an installation failure and perform the destination and free-space checks above. Then retry the installation with a clean disc. If other commercial discs also fail to install or read, continue to Safe Mode recovery rather than assuming that the error proves the disc drive needs replacement.
4. Use Safe Mode to clear cache and rebuild the database
When physical media checks do not resolve the problem, Sony’s next software-level step is Safe Mode. Start the PS5 in Safe Mode using the console’s startup procedure, connect the controller as prompted, and select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. This is the database-recovery option; it is not the same as erasing the console.
- Shut the PS5 down completely.
- Start Safe Mode according to the on-screen startup instructions.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Allow the process to finish without interrupting power.
- After the PS5 returns to normal operation, reinsert the disc and test it again.
Database rebuilding is useful when the console’s stored system information is interfering with normal recognition or installation. It does not repair a cracked disc or a failed mechanical drive, so repeat the cross-disc test after the process.

Sony lists Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) after database rebuilding. This operation deletes all information on the console. Back up data before considering it, and do not select it merely because one game disc is dirty or damaged. Use it only after the less destructive checks have failed and you accept the data-loss consequence.

5. Remove a stuck disc without damaging the drive
Never pull forcefully on a disc that will not eject. Sony’s safety instruction is: “Do not forcibly pull the disc from the disc drive.” Use the manual-eject procedure instead.
Prepare the console
- Turn the PS5 off completely.
- Disconnect every cable and attached device.
- Place the console on a soft, clean cloth to protect its surfaces.
- Remove the stand.
- Remove the appropriate outer cover for your PS5 model.
Turn the manual-eject screw
- Locate the manual-eject screw inside the exposed drive area.
- Use a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver.
- Turn the screw clockwise until the disc is almost completely visible.
- Gently lift the disc out by its edge.
- Reinstall the cover and stand before reconnecting cables.
Stop if the disc does not move with the specified gentle screw rotation. Do not pry the disc, insert tools into the slot, or increase force. Do not operate or play the PS5 with its cover removed. If the disc remains trapped, use PlayStation Repairs rather than risking damage to the mechanism.

When to contact PlayStation Repairs
Escalate after you have cleaned the media, tested several compatible discs, completed the Safe Mode database recovery, and checked installation destination and storage when the issue is copying rather than recognition. Contact PlayStation Repairs if multiple known-good discs still fail, the drive repeatedly traps or refuses to eject media, or the console cannot complete installation despite adequate space.

A cross-disc failure raises the likelihood of a console or drive fault, but it does not identify the failed component by itself. PlayStation Repairs is the path for an official diagnosis. Do not buy a replacement drive until you identify the model
Sony’s detachable replacement drive is not universal. Sony lists compatibility for PS5 Pro and for PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim model groups. Verify the model number printed on your console before purchasing a drive.

Pairing is part of installation
For a compatible console, the detachable drive requires an internet connection to pair during setup. A drive that physically fits is not automatically ready to use; model compatibility and the online pairing requirement both have to be satisfied. If you cannot provide internet access during setup, resolve that requirement before opening the console or purchasing the replacement.
7. A practical decision path
Use the following order so that each test answers a different question and you avoid replacing hardware prematurely:
- Power the console down and verify the disc orientation for a vertically positioned PS5.
- Inspect and clean the disc with a soft cloth, wiping from the center outward.
- Test another commercial game, then a Blu-ray or DVD if available.
- If the disc is recognized but copying fails, confirm the PS5 console is the installation destination and check free storage.
- Start Safe Mode and run Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- If software recovery fails, weigh the data loss of Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) before selecting it.
- If a disc is stuck, use the powered-off manual-eject procedure; never pull it out.
- If several known-good discs still fail, use PlayStation Repairs. Consider a detachable drive only after confirming that your model is a PS5 Pro or a CFI-2000/2100 PS5 Digital Edition slim model and that internet pairing is possible.
8. Mistakes that make diagnosis harder
- Testing only one disc: one scratched or contaminated disc cannot reveal whether the console is healthy.
- Using an unsupported format: burned discs and audio CDs are not playable on PS5 and should not be used as drive tests.
- Forcing a stuck disc: pulling can damage the disc or mechanism; use the manual-eject screw and stop if gentle movement does not work.
- Resetting too early: reinstalling system software erases console information and is listed after database rebuilding.
- Buying by appearance: detachable-drive compatibility is tied to specific model groups, not simply to the console’s color or external shape.
- Ignoring installation storage: a readable disc can still fail to install when the destination lacks sufficient free space.
Final verdict
Start with orientation, cleaning, and a cross-disc test. Then distinguish recognition from installation: installation failures require a correct PS5 destination and enough free storage. Use Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database before considering the destructive reinstall option. Remove stuck media only with the powered-off manual-eject procedure. When multiple compatible discs continue to fail, let PlayStation Repairs diagnose the hardware; purchase a replacement drive only after confirming a supported PS5 Pro or CFI-2000/2100 slim digital model and arranging internet pairing.
