Start with the least destructive test: fully power off the PS Vita, then hold L while powering it on. This suppresses taiHEN plugin loading for that boot. If the dashboard or affected bubble opens, a recently added or changed plugin or configuration entry is the leading suspect. Restore that change in the active tai configuration instead of deleting the entire custom-firmware installation.
If holding L does not restore boot, stop installing packages or repeatedly deleting files. A persistent black screen may be a boot loop or a more serious failure that needs a dedicated recovery procedure or experienced help. The correct fix depends on whether the Vita fails before the LiveArea appears, loses bubbles after a storage change, cannot activate its temporary exploit, or crashes only in one application.
Identify which failure you actually have
“Custom dashboard will not launch” can describe several different faults. Choose the branch that matches what you see before changing anything:

| Symptom | Most useful first action | What it usually indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Black screen or failed boot after a plugin or configuration change | Power off, then boot while holding L | taiHEN plugin conflict or malformed configuration |
| Vita boots, but homebrew bubbles disappeared after inserting or changing SD2Vita or another storage device | Check whether the intended ux0: volume is mounted | Storage-mount or storage-plugin problem, not necessarily deleted applications |
| HENkaku or HENlo will not activate in the browser | Use the browser recovery sequence | Temporary-exploit activation failure |
| Only Adrenaline fails | Use Adrenaline’s installation cleanup and reinstall sequence | Adrenaline bubble, kernel module, or PSP firmware issue |
| The Vita boots and only the customized start-screen picture is wrong | Use Settings > Format > Restore Start Screen Image | Visual-shell setting, not a broken executable or plugin |
Before reinstalling an application, rebuilding the database, or removing plugins, record the exact application name and any error code. That information prevents a storage or plugin fault from being mistaken for an application deletion.

Prepare before editing anything
Make the first successful boot a fact-finding session, not an opportunity to install more software. If the Vita starts only with plugins suppressed, leave it in that state while you copy important files and write down what changed. A backup of the active config.txt, the last plugin package added, and the storage arrangement gives you a way back if an edit has an unexpected result.
- Note whether the failure began after a plugin install, a configuration edit, an SD2Vita or USB change, an exploit attempt, or an application update.
- Record whether the Vita reaches the Sony logo, the LiveArea, or neither, and whether normal power controls still respond.
- Keep the original storage device and adapter available. Swapping hardware repeatedly can make it harder to tell which state is being tested.
- Do not format a card, delete a tai directory, or remove Ensō before preserving the information that could identify the fault.
The L-button test, reading Error History, and inspecting a configuration file are reversible and do not require buying anything. An SD2Vita adapter or microSD card is a hardware option only when the evidence points to a storage-mount problem.
1. Isolate taiHEN plugins with the L-button boot
- Turn the Vita completely off. Do not merely put it into standby.
- Press and hold L.
- While continuing to hold L, power the Vita on and keep holding the button through the start of the boot.
- Test the dashboard or bubble that previously failed.
This boot suppresses taiHEN plugin loading without removing files. It is therefore the safest diagnostic step for a black screen or a failure that began immediately after installing or editing a plugin.
If the dashboard works with plugins suppressed
The change is probably in the active tai configuration. The Vita Hacks Guide gives this practical direction: “If your device boots, try editing ux0:tai/config.txt and remove any plugins you may have recently added.” Treat that as a targeted rollback, not an instruction to erase every tai folder.
- Open a file manager such as VitaShell while the system is in its working state.
- Determine which tai directory is active: commonly
ux0:taiorur0:tai. The active location depends on the way the installation is configured; do not assume thatux0:is active. - Make a backup copy of the relevant
config.txtbefore editing it. Preserve the original path and filename so you can restore it. - Review the newest plugin lines and the most recent configuration change. Remove or comment out only the entry associated with the change that preceded the failure.
- Save the file, reboot normally without holding L, and test the dashboard.
If the Vita boots normally after one entry is removed, keep the backup and add plugins back one at a time only when you understand their purpose and compatibility. Do not remove unrelated entries merely because they appear in the same file; broad deletion can create additional failures.
When the active configuration is unclear
Do not edit both ux0:tai/config.txt and ur0:tai/config.txt at random. First establish which volume the installation uses and which configuration is being read. If you cannot identify the active file, preserve both copies and ask for help with the exact paths, plugin names, and symptoms. A detailed description is more useful than reporting only that the Vita is “bricked.”
Common plugin-rollback pitfalls
Removing a line from the wrong configuration file has no effect, while deleting the entire tai folder removes useful diagnostic evidence and can create new boot problems. Editing while the wrong storage volume is mounted can also make a correct change appear ineffective. Reboot normally after each deliberate change so you know which edit altered the result. If one plugin is suspected, test with that entry disabled before touching the others.

2. If the Vita still shows a black screen
If holding L does not allow the Vita to boot, stop installing advanced homebrew packages and stop making unrecorded edits. The documented troubleshooting guidance treats an unresolved failure at this stage as a possible boot loop or brick and directs users to a dedicated boot-loop procedure.
- Keep any configuration backups and note the last plugin, application, storage change, or firmware action performed.
- Write down whether the screen is completely black, whether the system reaches the Sony logo, and whether the device responds to normal power controls.
- Do not jump to custom-firmware removal or a stock-firmware update merely because normal boot failed.
- Seek help with the exact sequence you tried, including whether the L-button boot changed anything.
Repeatedly deleting tai folders, replacing random modules, or installing more packages can destroy the evidence needed to diagnose the original fault. A suspected brick is the point to use a dedicated boot-loop procedure or experienced repair help, not to keep experimenting with unrelated dashboards.
3. Recover missing bubbles after a storage change
When VitaShell, a custom dashboard, or other homebrew bubbles disappear immediately after inserting an SD2Vita adapter or changing storage, treat the symptom as a mount problem first. Applications may still exist on a volume that the Vita is not currently using as ux0:.
Check the storage state before reinstalling anything
- Boot the Vita normally if possible. If normal boot fails, perform the L-button isolation test first; a storage fault and a plugin fault can occur together.
- Open the storage or file-management view available on the system and verify that the intended
ux0:volume is present. - Check that the storage plugin or adapter is mounted in the way your setup expects. Look for a missing volume, an unexpectedly small capacity, or a mount that changes between reboots.
- Only after the correct volume is mounted should you decide whether an application is actually missing. Reinstalling a bubble while the wrong
ux0:is active can place files on the wrong device and make the situation more confusing.
The setup documentation describes alternative storage using a microSD card or USB drive. Consequently, an SD2Vita adapter and compatible microSD card are relevant physical accessories when the failure follows a storage swap, failed mount, missing volume, or disappearing bubbles.
They are not universal repairs. New storage cannot fix a malformed taiHEN configuration, an incompatible plugin, damaged system software, or a broken dashboard executable. Buy or replace storage only when the timing and symptoms point to the storage branch. There is no fixed accessory cost that applies to every Vita setup; compatibility and the existing storage arrangement matter more than choosing hardware blindly.
Signs that storage is the likely cause
- Bubbles vanish immediately after changing the adapter, card, or storage plugin.
- The Vita reports a different capacity than expected or no longer shows the intended volume.
- Applications return after the original storage device is restored.
- The system itself boots reliably, but content stored on
ux0:is unavailable.
If the Vita remains black-screened even with plugins suppressed, storage alone is not an adequate explanation; return to the boot-loop branch instead of repeatedly formatting cards. Formatting can erase data without fixing the configuration that prevented the mount.
4. Recover a temporary exploit that will not activate
A dashboard that used to launch and then stopped is different from HENkaku or HENlo failing to activate in the browser. For an activation failure, use the browser-specific recovery sequence:

- Verify a stable network connection.
- Make sure JavaScript is enabled in the Vita browser.
- Delete the browser cookies and search history.
- Reboot the Vita.
- Wait briefly after the reboot, then retry the exploit.
Browser exploits can be unstable, so a failed activation does not by itself prove that the installed dashboard or its files are damaged. Conversely, browser cleanup will not repair a plugin conflict when taiHEN is already active and only one installed application fails. Do not send a reader through exploit recovery when the Vita already reaches LiveArea and the failure is confined to a single bubble.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →5. Record the exact error in Sony’s Error History
Sony’s PlayStation Vita User’s Guide documents Settings > System > Error History. The guide states that you can check “the most recent 10 errors, such as download failures and failures to connect to the Internet.” Selecting an entry may show details that help identify a remedy. The guide is dated 2021.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open Error History.
- Record the code, date or order, and application name shown for the failure.
Capture this information before removing plugins, reinstalling a bubble, rebuilding the database, or changing storage. An exact code can distinguish an application-specific crash from a missing volume, permission issue, plugin failure, or network problem. If Error History contains no matching entry, record that absence as well. The list holds the most recent 10 errors, so older events may no longer appear; write down an entry before performing more tests.
6. Use the Adrenaline-specific repair only when Adrenaline is the failing dashboard
Adrenaline is not a generic Vita bubble. It modifies the official PSP emulator through the taiHEN custom-firmware framework, so its repair sequence involves a bubble and a kernel module that do not apply to unrelated dashboards.
Fresh Adrenaline installation sequence
- Remove the existing Adrenaline bubble.
- In the active tai configuration, remove the line for
ux0:app/PSPEMUCFW/sce_module/adrenaline_kernel.skprx. - Reboot the Vita.
- Use VitaShell to install
Adrenaline.vpk. - Launch Adrenaline.
- Press X when prompted to download the PSP 6.61 firmware.
- Relaunch Adrenaline after the firmware download completes.
Confirm the tai configuration path before removing the kernel-module line. If your active configuration is under ur0:, editing an unused ux0: file will not change the behavior. Do not apply this module-removal sequence to VitaShell, a different dashboard, or an unrelated homebrew title. If other applications also fail, return to the general plugin and storage branches rather than repeating an Adrenaline reinstall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems7. Do not remove Ensō as a first-line repair
Removing HENkaku Ensō is a deliberate return-to-stock operation, not a generic troubleshooting shortcut. The current uninstallation guidance says that complete removal also removes the custom firmware and plugins. It warns that VPK or PKG files installed with homebrew will not run on stock firmware and that the process is irreversible if something goes wrong.
| Recovery option | Reversibility | Best match | Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boot while holding L | High | Black screen or failure after a plugin change | Temporarily suppresses plugin loading; does not delete files |
| Restore the newest tai configuration change | High if backed up | Vita boots with plugins suppressed | Targets one suspected conflict while preserving the rest of the setup |
Verify ux0: and storage mounting |
High | Bubbles disappear after storage changes | May restore access to existing applications; does not repair software conflicts |
| Browser cleanup and retry | High | HENkaku or HENlo activation failure | Addresses exploit activation, not an already-installed dashboard crash |
| Adrenaline cleanup and reinstall | Medium | Adrenaline-only failure | Removes its bubble and kernel-module entry before reinstalling |
| Remove Ensō or update to stock firmware | Low | Conscious decision to abandon custom firmware | Plugins and homebrew-installed VPK/PKG titles become inaccessible on stock firmware |
Only consider CFW removal after backups, diagnosis, and acceptance of that loss of homebrew functionality. It should never be the first response to a dashboard that will not launch. Treat a stock return as a separate project with its own preparation, not as a quick reset button.

8. Reset only a damaged start-screen image
If the Vita boots normally and the only problem is a customized start-screen picture, Sony documents Settings > Format > Restore Start Screen Image. Selecting that option restores the system’s start-screen image to the default image.
This narrow reset does not repair a missing bubble, failed executable, unavailable ux0: volume, plugin conflict, or broken custom-firmware installation. Use it only when the defect is visual and the rest of the system works. Do not choose a broader format option when restoring the image is all that is needed.

How to choose the next step
Use reversibility and symptom match as your safeguards. Holding L, checking Error History, and verifying a mount preserve the installation. Editing one backed-up configuration line is still targeted. Reinstalling an application, changing storage, or removing a kernel module has a larger effect and should follow evidence that the affected component is responsible. Removing Ensō or updating to stock has the greatest homebrew impact and belongs at the end of the decision tree.
Hardware purchases should follow the same rule. An SD2Vita adapter and compatible microSD card can address a missing or incorrectly mounted ux0: volume, but they cannot repair taiHEN entries, a dashboard executable, or a suspected brick. There is no reason to buy storage for a Vita that boots normally and fails only after a plugin was added.
A practical order of operations
- Classify the symptom: black screen, missing bubbles after storage work, exploit activation failure, one-app crash, or visual-only problem.
- Record the application name and Error History entry, including the code if one exists.
- For a black screen or post-plugin failure, perform the L-button boot.
- If that works, back up and edit the active tai configuration, removing only the newest suspected entry.
- If bubbles disappeared after a storage change, verify the intended
ux0:mount before reinstalling applications. - If the browser exploit will not activate, clear cookies and history, enable JavaScript, reboot, and retry.
- If the failing application is Adrenaline, follow its specific kernel-module and firmware sequence.
- If none of these branches restores boot, stop experimenting and escalate as a possible boot loop or brick.
- Reserve Ensō removal or a stock-firmware update for a deliberate return-to-stock decision.
What to include when asking for help
A useful support report should state the Vita model if known, whether it reaches the Sony logo or LiveArea, the exact dashboard or bubble that fails, the last plugin or storage change, whether holding L changes the result, the active tai path if known, and the Error History code. Include what you already tried and whether the original storage device restores the bubbles. This level of detail lets someone distinguish a plugin conflict from a mount problem or an actual boot loop without asking you to repeat destructive steps.
Also state whether the failure affects every homebrew bubble or only one, whether the Vita boots after a complete power-off, and whether the problem appears with the storage adapter removed. Mention any backup you made and leave the original files untouched until someone has reviewed the symptoms. A precise timeline—what worked, what changed, and what failed next—is more useful than a general statement that the custom dashboard is broken.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
My hacked PS Vita dashboard will not open. What should I try first?
Fully power off the Vita and boot while holding L. This suppresses taiHEN plugin loading for that boot. If the dashboard opens, back up the active tai configuration and remove or restore only the newest suspected plugin or configuration entry.

Why did my Vita homebrew bubbles disappear after I inserted an SD2Vita?
Check whether the intended ux0: volume is mounted and whether the storage adapter or plugin reports the expected capacity. The applications may still be on the previous volume. Reinstalling them before correcting the mount can put files on the wrong device.
How do I fix a PS Vita black screen after installing a plugin?
Power off, hold L during startup, and test the Vita. If it boots, edit the active ux0:tai/config.txt or ur0:tai/config.txt—whichever is actually in use—after making a backup. Remove the recently added entry rather than deleting every tai folder.
Why does VitaShell crash while other bubbles work?
Record the exact error in Settings > System > Error History, then test with plugins suppressed by holding L during boot. If VitaShell works in that mode, a plugin or configuration conflict is more likely than a missing application.
Why does Adrenaline crash on launch?
Use the Adrenaline-specific sequence: remove its bubble, remove the active configuration line for ux0:app/PSPEMUCFW/sce_module/adrenaline_kernel.skprx, reboot, install Adrenaline.vpk through VitaShell, launch it, press X to download PSP 6.61 firmware, and relaunch. Do not use this procedure for unrelated applications.
Can I repair my Vita without removing Ensō?
Usually, yes. L-button plugin isolation, a targeted tai configuration rollback, storage-mount verification, browser cleanup, and an Adrenaline-specific reinstall are less destructive. Removing Ensō removes custom firmware and plugins, and VPK or PKG titles installed through homebrew will not run on stock firmware.
What if my PS Vita custom firmware is stuck in a boot loop?
Try the L-button boot once. If the Vita still will not boot, stop installing packages or deleting files, preserve configuration backups, and use a dedicated boot-loop procedure or seek experienced help. Report the last change and whether holding L altered the result.
Will buying a new microSD card fix a dashboard that will not launch?
Only if the symptoms follow a storage swap, failed mount, missing ux0: volume, or disappearing bubbles. A microSD card and SD2Vita adapter cannot repair a malformed taiHEN configuration, incompatible plugin, damaged system software, or broken executable.
Can restoring the start-screen image repair a missing dashboard bubble?
No. Settings > Format > Restore Start Screen Image only returns the customized start-screen picture to Sony’s default. It does not repair plugins, storage mounts, missing applications, or custom-firmware failures.
The Bottom Line
Use the L-button boot first. If it restores the dashboard, roll back the newest entry in the active tai configuration and keep a backup. If bubbles vanished after a storage change, verify ux0: before reinstalling anything; use SD2Vita hardware only for that storage-specific case. Browser cleanup is for HENkaku or HENlo activation failures, and Adrenaline has its own repair sequence. If plugin isolation does not restore boot, stop experimenting and treat the problem as a possible boot loop. Removing Ensō is a deliberate return-to-stock choice, not a routine fix.
