If a PS Plus Premium game trial is missing or will not download on your PS5, first verify that the Premium subscription is active on the account you are using and that the trial is still offered in your country. A trial that is absent from the catalog usually indicates an entitlement, plan, region, catalog, or account issue. A trial that appears but remains in the queue usually needs a license refresh, a service check, a system update, or a clean download retry. Follow the checks below in order; storage expansion matters only when the console specifically reports that it is out of space.

Identify whether this is an entitlement problem or a download problem

The quickest diagnosis is to compare what you see on screen with the symptom you are experiencing. The two situations require different fixes.

What you see Most likely area First action
The trial tile or trial option is completely absent Account, subscription tier, region, or changing catalog Sign in with the Premium account and confirm the title is currently included
The title is listed but shows a lock or asks you to subscribe License or entitlement recognition Confirm the active subscription, then restore licenses
The trial starts downloading but pauses, fails, or remains queued Download queue, PlayStation Network service, system software, or storage Check service status, then pause and resume the download
The console reports insufficient free space Local storage capacity Free space before retrying; consider compatible expansion only if needed

Do not buy storage or repeatedly reinstall a game when the trial is not available to the account. Hardware cannot create a missing subscription entitlement.

Confirm the Premium entitlement, title and region

Use the account that owns Premium

Open the PlayStation Plus games and trials catalog while signed in to the account that actually pays for or otherwise holds the Premium subscription. Premium, or Deluxe in markets where that tier is used, is the PlayStation Plus level that includes Game Trials. Essential and Extra do not provide the same trial benefit.

Check the subscription page for an active status rather than relying on a previous renewal or a family member’s account. If the subscription payment failed, expired, was cancelled, or is pending a change, the trial may disappear or become locked. PlayStation’s download guidance likewise requires the subscription to be active when a game is included through PlayStation Plus.

Check that the catalog still includes the game

Game Trials are not a permanent list. PlayStation can add or remove titles, and the available catalog can differ by country or region. Search for the game in the current catalog and read the listing for the account’s market. A title that appeared in a promotion, news story, or an earlier visit may no longer be offered as a Premium trial.

If another user on the same PS5 can see the game, compare the account and region shown on each profile. A different country account, a different subscription tier, or a changed catalog can explain the discrepancy without any fault on the console.

Make sure the listing is a trial, not a different edition

A game can have separate entries for a full purchase, a demo, downloadable content, a PS4 version, and a time-limited Premium trial. Open the product page from the PlayStation Plus catalog and look for the trial option associated with the subscription. Starting a purchase of the full game does not fix a missing trial entitlement, and downloading a PS4 edition may not satisfy a PS5 trial listing.

Understand why sharing does not provide the trial

Console Sharing and Offline Play can share many purchased games and some PlayStation Plus benefits, but early access to time-limited game trials is specifically excluded from the benefits that can be shared. If Premium belongs to a different user on the PS5, the other profile should not be expected to receive that trial.

Have the Premium owner sign in and test the trial first. If it works only for that owner, the behavior is normal rather than a broken download. The owner can use the trial on the account with the subscription; changing the console’s sharing setting will not transfer the early-access entitlement to another profile.

Check account, network service and PS5 software basics

Verify the subscription and account session

  1. Sign out of any profile that does not own Premium, then sign in to the subscribing account.
  2. Open PlayStation Plus and confirm the plan displays Premium, or Deluxe where that is the local equivalent, with an active expiration or renewal status.
  3. Return to the game listing and check whether the trial option appears for that account.

If the account recently renewed, changed plans, or restored a payment, allow the console to refresh its account information by signing out and back in before testing again.

Check PlayStation Network status

A service incident can prevent the catalog, licenses, store pages, or downloads from responding correctly. Check the official PlayStation Network status page from a phone or computer. If the service page shows an outage affecting account management, PlayStation Store, gaming and social, or downloads, wait for the incident to clear before changing local settings. Repeated retries during an outage can leave multiple failed entries in the queue.

Install the latest PS5 system software

On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and install any available update. Restart the console after the update completes, then sign in to the Premium account and check the listing again. A current system version helps the console communicate with PlayStation services and process newer store metadata.

Restore licenses on PS5

Restore Licenses is the standard fix when the account has the right to use a game but the console displays a lock, omits the trial option, or behaves as if the entitlement is missing. It does not cancel a subscription or remove installed games.

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Users and Accounts.
  3. Choose Other.
  4. Select Restore Licenses and confirm.
  5. Wait for the process to finish, then return to the PlayStation Plus catalog.
  6. Open the game’s listing and try the trial download again.

Restore licenses while signed in to the account that owns Premium. Running it on a profile without the entitlement cannot grant that profile access. If the listing remains locked after restoration, recheck the subscription, region and catalog before attempting the download repeatedly.

Clear a trial that is stuck in the download queue

When the trial is visible but does not progress, use the PS5’s queue controls instead of immediately deleting the game or rebuilding the database.

Pause and resume first

  1. Press the PS button to open the control centre.
  2. Select Downloads/Uploads.
  3. Highlight the trial download.
  4. Choose Pause, wait a few seconds, and choose Resume.

This restarts the transfer while preserving the queue entry. Watch for a new error code or a progress change. If the download resumes, leave the PS5 connected to the network until it completes.

Cancel and delete, then start a clean download

If pause and resume does not help, PlayStation’s download guidance recommends removing the failed queue item and starting again.

  1. Open the control centre with the PS button.
  2. Select Downloads/Uploads and highlight the trial.
  3. Choose Cancel and Delete and confirm.
  4. Open Game Library and find the title, or return to its PlayStation Plus catalog page.
  5. Select the trial download again.

Cancel and Delete removes the current download data from the queue; it does not remove your Premium account or change the subscription. If the option to start the trial is gone after deletion, return to the entitlement checks rather than assuming the deletion caused the loss.

Retry only after checking for a service interruption

A clean retry is useful for a corrupted or stalled local queue, but it cannot overcome a PlayStation Network outage or an expired entitlement. If the same error appears immediately after a fresh attempt, note the code and stop repeating the cycle until the account and service checks are complete.

Free storage only when the PS5 reports a capacity problem

Look for an explicit insufficient-storage message or a download size that exceeds the available free space. If neither is present, storage is unlikely to be the cause of a missing catalog tile or a license lock.

Make room on the internal drive

  • Open Settings > Storage to review free space.
  • Delete games or media you no longer need, or move eligible games to USB extended storage.
  • Empty space by removing incomplete downloads that are no longer wanted.
  • Return to Downloads/Uploads and retry the trial after the free-space figure updates.

Keep enough headroom for the download and installation process; the required amount is determined by the title and the console’s installation behavior. The relevant evidence is the PS5’s own capacity warning, not the fact that another game is large.

Consider an M.2 NVMe SSD only for sustained capacity needs

A PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with a heatsink can add internal storage when the console repeatedly runs out of room. Before buying, verify that the drive meets Sony’s supported interface, speed, capacity and physical-dimension requirements, including the heatsink clearance. An incompatible drive can fail to install or operate unreliably.

Expansion storage does not repair subscription, catalog, regional, sharing, license, or PlayStation Network problems. Treat it as a capacity solution after the console identifies free space as the blocker, not as a general fix for a missing Premium trial.

Collect the right evidence before contacting PlayStation Support

Contact support when the Premium owner has an active plan, the title is still listed for the correct region, licenses have been restored, the PS5 software is current, and a clean queue retry still fails. Support can investigate an account or service condition that local troubleshooting cannot change.

Prepare a concise record so the agent can reproduce the problem:

  • The exact error code and its full wording.
  • The date and time, including your time zone if relevant.
  • The PSN account used, identified without sharing your password or payment details.
  • The country or region on the account and the Premium or Deluxe tier shown.
  • The game’s exact title and whether the trial tile is missing, locked, or stuck in Downloads/Uploads.
  • The steps already tried: service-status check, system update, license restoration, pause/resume, and Cancel and Delete.
  • A screenshot or short video showing the listing, error, or queue state.

Do not repeatedly create new accounts or change the console region to force a listing. Those actions can complicate entitlement records and do not make an unavailable regional trial valid for your account.

What not to do

  • Do not assume that another household member’s Premium subscription shares early access to a time-limited trial.
  • Do not purchase the full game merely because the trial tile is missing; first establish whether the trial is still in the catalog.
  • Do not buy an SSD until the PS5 reports that storage is the actual limitation.
  • Do not keep restarting a download during a confirmed PlayStation Network outage.
  • Do not provide passwords, full payment-card numbers, or two-factor authentication codes to anyone claiming to fix the account.

Quick recovery checklist

  1. Sign in to the account with Premium or the supported Deluxe tier.
  2. Confirm the subscription is active.
  3. Confirm the game trial is still listed for the account’s country or region.
  4. Check that the problem is not simply a non-owner profile attempting to use a non-shareable trial.
  5. Check PlayStation Network status.
  6. Install the latest PS5 system software and restart.
  7. Use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
  8. From the control centre, open Downloads/Uploads, then pause and resume the trial.
  9. If it still fails, choose Cancel and Delete and redownload it from Game Library or the catalog.
  10. Free storage only if the PS5 reports insufficient space.
  11. Record the error and reproduction details before contacting PlayStation Support.
