If a Pokémon download, update, or installation appears frozen on Nintendo Switch, start with the non-destructive checks: test the internet connection, close Pokémon, confirm free storage, restart the console and router, then let the system work in sleep mode with the charger connected. Most stalled transfers are caused by a connection problem, insufficient space, or the download queue being paused while an online-capable game is open—not by a Pokémon-specific defect.
The sequence below covers Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, and Switch 2 situations, including digital purchases and game-card updates. It also explains when deleting software is safe, how account ownership affects redownloading, and what information Nintendo Support needs if the progress bar still does not move.
First, identify what is actually stuck
A download, an update, and an installation are related but different stages. The fix depends on which stage has stopped.
Recommended Free Tools
| What you see | Likely stage | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| A percentage, spinning indicator, or “downloading” message in HOME or Nintendo eShop | Data is being transferred | Internet test, router, storage, and whether Pokémon is open |
| An update prompt appears, but the update never starts or repeatedly pauses | Update data is waiting in the queue | Close the game, check storage, and retry from HOME |
| The download reaches the end, then the game remains unavailable | Installation or verification is pending | Keep the console in sleep mode and check account or virtual-game-card status |
| The title disappeared after you deleted it or changed consoles | Redownload entitlement is not being found | Use the Nintendo Account that bought the software and verify virtual-game-card availability |
Do not assume a bar that moves slowly is frozen. A transfer can advance in small increments, and installation begins automatically only after the download has completed. Nintendo’s support guidance states that installation is performed automatically after downloading finishes.

1. Check the internet connection
A weak or interrupted connection is the most direct explanation for an “unable to connect” message, repeated pauses, or a percentage that does not change. Nintendo documents both wireless and wired internet setup for Switch systems.
Run the built-in connection test
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Internet, then Test Connection.
- Wait for the test to report whether the console can reach the internet. Note any error code or NAT result shown.
- If the test fails, move the console closer to the wireless router, remove obvious sources of interference, and test again.
Restart the router if other devices are also offline. Then restart the Switch and run the test once more. Nintendo’s system-update guidance specifically notes that restarting the console can restore a connection when an update cannot connect.
Try a wired connection when available
A wired connection can remove wireless interference from the equation. A standard Switch dock or a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter may be required, depending on the console and dock model. Connect the Ethernet cable, open System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings, select the wired network, and test the connection. Switch Lite requires compatible accessories for wired networking; do not assume it has a built-in Ethernet port.
After the test succeeds, return to HOME and resume the Pokémon transfer. If the connection test succeeds but the transfer still pauses, continue with the storage and queue checks rather than repeatedly changing network settings.
2. Close Pokémon so the download queue can run
Nintendo states that eShop downloads can proceed while the console is asleep or while a title without online-play functions is being played. Downloads stop while an online-play-capable title is being played, even when you are not actively using its online features. Pokémon software can therefore hold its own update or another queued download while it is open.

- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
- Press the HOME button to leave Pokémon.
- Highlight the Pokémon icon on the HOME Menu.
- Press the X button.
- Choose Close and confirm.
- Open HOME > Download Management (the down-arrow icon) and check whether the Pokémon item resumes.
Do not merely suspend the game by pressing HOME. Close it completely when troubleshooting a paused transfer. If another online-capable game is open, close that title as well.
3. Use sleep mode to finish the transfer
Sleep mode is a supported download state, not a workaround that risks the transfer. Connect the charger, confirm that the network test passed, and put the console to sleep.
- Close Pokémon as described above.
- Connect the official charger or a compatible power supply.
- Press the POWER button once, or choose Power Options > Sleep Mode from the POWER menu.
- Leave the console within reliable wireless range, or keep its wired network connected through the dock.
- Wake the console after a reasonable interval and check HOME > Download Management.
Installation starts automatically after the download completes. If the percentage advances in sleep mode, the queue was working and the apparent freeze was caused by the game being open or by foreground activity.
4. Check free space before deleting anything
Switch software requires enough free capacity in system memory or on a microSD card. Update data can require additional space beyond the size of the existing game, so a title can fail near completion even when the game itself appears to fit.
- Open System Settings from HOME.
- Select Data Management.
- Review System Memory and the installed microSD card, if present.
- Compare the available space with the download or update requirement shown by the eShop or game prompt.
If space is low, first remove content you can restore safely. Screenshots and videos can be copied to a computer or microSD card; completed games can be archived; and software can be redownloaded later by the purchasing account. Do not delete save data as a space-saving shortcut.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Archive versus delete
Archiving software removes the game’s program data while keeping its icon and save data. You can select the icon later and download the software again. Deleting software also removes the program data, but save data is managed separately. Before choosing either option, verify that the user profile has the correct save data and that you can sign in to the purchasing Nintendo Account.

A compatible microSD card adds storage for software and updates, but it does not repair a bad network connection or an account entitlement problem. After inserting a card, return to System Settings > Data Management and confirm that the console recognizes it. If the card is full, damaged, or intermittently disconnecting, keep enough space in system memory to retry and investigate the card rather than repeatedly restarting the download.
5. Update the Switch system software
An outdated system can interfere with downloading or installing current game data. Nintendo’s documented path is:
- Open HOME > System Settings.
- Select System.
- Select System Update.
- Allow the console to check for and install an available update.
If the system update cannot connect, restart the console and retry after confirming the internet test succeeds. Keep the charger connected during the update. Once the system software is current, retry the Pokémon download or update.
6. Verify the Nintendo Account and virtual-game-card state
Digital software is tied to the Nintendo Account that purchased or registered it. Bundled software needs a Nintendo Account-linked user for first registration. A download can therefore appear missing, refuse to start, or fail to reappear after deletion when the console is using a different account.

If the game was deleted
- Open Nintendo eShop with the Nintendo Account that bought the Pokémon title.
- Open the account menu and view the account’s purchase history or redownload list.
- Confirm that the title appears as owned.
- Check that the corresponding virtual game card is available on the console, then select the redownload option.
Do not buy the game again simply because its HOME icon is gone. If the purchase does not appear under the original account, signing in with a different user will not restore the entitlement.
If you changed consoles
On another Switch-family console, sign in with the purchasing Nintendo Account and follow the virtual-game-card prompts before attempting the redownload. A game-card copy is different: the physical card must be inserted, while its update data still downloads to the console or microSD card.
7. Retry the download or update cleanly
After checking connection, storage, queue state, system software, and account ownership, retry once rather than repeatedly interrupting the process.
- Close Pokémon completely.
- Open HOME > Download Management and select the stalled item if a resume option is shown.
- If the item is not listed, start the update from the Pokémon icon by pressing + or –, choosing Software Update, and selecting Via the Internet.
- Keep the charger connected and place the console in sleep mode.
- Recheck the progress after waking the console.
A game-card update follows the same network and storage checks. The card supplies the base software, but update data still needs a working internet connection and free space.

| Fix | Primary cause addressed | Save-data risk | Extra hardware | Typical effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Internet test and router restart | Connection failure or instability | Non-destructive | None | Quick |
| Close Pokémon and use sleep mode | Download queue paused by an open online-capable title | Non-destructive | Charger recommended | Quick, then transfer time |
| Free system or microSD space | Insufficient capacity, especially for update data | Non-destructive if you archive; protect saves | Optional compatible microSD card | Minutes plus redownload time |
| System software update | Console software compatibility or connection recovery | Non-destructive | None | Several minutes or longer |
| Redownload from purchase history | Account or virtual-game-card entitlement | Save data remains separate, but verify the account first | None | Depends on connection and game size |
| Delete or archive and redownload | Corrupted or incomplete program data | Archiving is safer; never delete save data casually | Enough storage | Longest; full transfer required |
Symptoms and the next action
“Unable to connect” or another network error
Run System Settings > Internet > Test Connection, restart the router and console, and retry. Use wired Ethernet where compatible. Record the exact error code if the test continues to fail.

“Not enough space” or a loop near completion
Open System Settings > Data Management, free internal or microSD capacity, and leave additional room for update data. Archive an unneeded game rather than deleting save data.
The download pauses whenever Pokémon is open
Close the game with X > Close, then use HOME or sleep mode. An online-capable title can stop downloads even when online play is not being used.
The transfer is missing after deletion or on another console
Use the purchasing Nintendo Account, verify the virtual game card, and redownload from purchase history. A different user account will not show another account’s digital purchase.
The progress bar is unchanged after every check
Stop making destructive changes. Capture the exact message or error code, note the console model, storage location, and whether the software is digital or a game-card update, then contact Nintendo Support. The available Nintendo guidance does not establish a Pokémon-specific outage or a universal error-code fix, so a single guaranteed remedy cannot be promised.
Protect your save data while troubleshooting
- Closing a game, restarting the console, testing the network, updating system software, and using sleep mode do not intentionally erase save data.
- Archiving or deleting software removes program files, not the separate save-data record, but verify the correct user profile before proceeding.
- Do not initialize the console or delete save data merely because a download is stuck.
- If the title is digital, confirm the purchasing account and virtual game card before removing the only local copy.
- Keep the console powered during system updates and avoid removing a microSD card while data is being written.
What to tell Nintendo Support
Support can diagnose a stalled transfer more effectively when the report includes the exact wording on screen. Prepare:
- The error code and full message, copied exactly.
- The console model: Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, or Switch 2.
- Whether the software is a digital purchase, bundled download, or game-card update.
- Whether data is stored in system memory or on a microSD card.
- The point at which it stops: immediately, at a particular percentage, after reaching 100 percent, or when installation should begin.
- Whether the internet test succeeds and whether sleep mode changes the progress.
- The Nintendo Account used to purchase or register the game.
These details distinguish a connection problem from a capacity, queue, storage-media, or entitlement problem without requiring you to erase the game first.
