If your PC’s screen freezes during a game while the computer stays powered on, the symptom alone does not identify a faulty part. First work out whether Windows is still responding, then check the game and graphics driver, review Windows logs after the next failure, and investigate heat, power, or memory only when the evidence points that way. Change one thing at a time; do not replace a component based on the freeze alone.
First determine what is actually frozen
During the next incident, note what you see and what still works. A game-only hang, a display-driver problem, and a full system lockup can look similar, but they call for different checks. These observations help narrow the route; none proves a specific cause by itself.
- Only the game stops: Note whether Windows remains usable, whether the pointer moves, and whether other apps respond.
- The image freezes or goes black: Check whether audio continues and whether the monitor reports a lost signal. If the display is blank, check the monitor’s power, input, and cable connections.
- Windows may still be responding: Try
Ctrl+Alt+Del. If the security screen appears, Windows is not wholly locked. - The picture appears stuck but the PC may still be running: Press
Windows+Ctrl+Shift+Bto ask Windows to reset the graphics driver. A beep or screen flicker can indicate that the reset occurred; it is a diagnostic attempt, not a guaranteed fix. - Nothing responds: Record the time and what you were doing. If you must hold the power button to shut down, note that as well; later events in the logs may reflect the forced shutdown rather than the original freeze.
- The PC restarts by itself: Capture any stop code or named file shown on screen, and note whether the restart happens in one game or several.
Also record recent changes: graphics or Windows updates, BIOS settings, new hardware, overclocking, or newly installed overlays and apps. The pattern and timing give later checks useful context.
Rule out a game, app, or graphics-driver problem
If the problem occurs in only one game, start with that game and its recently changed settings or related apps rather than assuming the entire PC is failing. Close overlays or recently added apps one at a time if the symptoms suggest an app conflict. Repeat the same game scenario after each change so you can tell whether it made a difference.

A display-driver issue is more plausible when the image goes black, flickers, or stops updating while other signs suggest the system is still alive. Microsoft’s screen-flicker troubleshooting uses Task Manager to help distinguish a display-driver symptom from an incompatible app. Flickering is not the same as a gaming freeze, so this is a related check, not a diagnosis.
If the freeze began after a graphics-driver update
Try rolling back the driver before installing another version. In Windows, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the graphics adapter, select Properties, open the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if the option is available. Restart and test the same game scenario. Microsoft recommends rollback when a display problem starts after an update.
If there was no recent driver update, or rollback is unavailable
Use the PC maker’s or graphics-adapter maker’s supported driver procedure to update. If updating does not help, uninstall and reinstall the driver using that supported procedure. Avoid changing driver, game, and BIOS settings together: if the symptom changes, you will not know which adjustment mattered.

- Streamlined Fan Connections: Daisy-chain multiple fans together and control them all through just one 4-pin PWM connector and one +5V ARGB connector.
- Lighting Made Easy: Eight LEDs per fan shine bright with customisable lighting through your motherboard’s built-in ARGB control (requires compatible motherboard).
- Precise PWM Speeds: Set your fan speeds up to 2,100 RPM while providing up to 72.8 CFM airflow to your system.
- CORSAIR AirGuide Technology: Anti-vortex vanes direct airflow at your hottest components for concentrated cooling, pushing air in the direction you need when mounted to a radiator or heatsink.
- High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.
If the issue began after a Windows, driver, or software change and ordinary checks do not help, disconnect nonessential external devices and consider a supported software or driver rollback. Do not start with a Windows reset: it is disruptive, and important files should be backed up before attempting recovery options.
After a freeze, check Windows evidence
Once Windows has restarted, look at the System and Application logs in Event Viewer around the recorded time. Microsoft also documents the command perfmon /report, which generates a System Diagnostics report. Record the exact event text and timestamp rather than relying on a summary.
A nearby event is a clue, not proof that it caused the freeze. In particular, an error logged after a forced power-off may describe the resulting restart, not what first stopped the game or display. If Windows showed a stop code or restarted unexpectedly, save the code and any named module; recurring stop-code errors can involve hardware, drivers, or software, and Microsoft’s recovery guidance includes Safe Mode, Device Manager, Windows updates, and recovery options.

Configuring memory dumps can provide more advanced evidence, but it may involve registry changes. Leave that path to an experienced user or technician unless you know how to make and reverse those changes.
Check temperatures, fans, and airflow before buying parts
Observe CPU and GPU temperatures and fan operation while reproducing the problem. Use a monitoring tool suited to the exact hardware or built-in diagnostics from the computer maker. There is no single “safe gaming temperature” established for every CPU and GPU model, so interpret readings against the specifications and guidance for your actual components.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIntel’s overheating guidance for self-built PCs using Intel boxed processors identifies cooler compatibility and installation, fan operation, unobstructed airflow, and dust as checks. It explains that overheating can cause throttling and, in an extreme protective condition, a halt. That scope does not diagnose every computer; owners of laptops, prebuilts, or all-in-ones should use the manufacturer’s diagnostics and support.

If you can see dust buildup, shut down and unplug a desktop before cleaning, and follow the component maker’s instructions. Intel’s Arc A770 gaming-reboot guidance describes gently cleaning dust around memory, the graphics card, and slots with a soft cloth or compressed-air can. That advice is specific to its Arc A770 case; cleaning may help with an airflow issue, but it will not establish or cure an unrelated fault.
For a supported ASUS computer, MyASUS may offer system diagnosis. If its available checks and documented steps do not resolve the issue, contact ASUS support. Other manufacturers may offer their own diagnostics.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Investigate power and memory only when there is a reason
Gaming increases system load, so power delivery and component stability are possible avenues—but a freeze alone is not evidence that the power supply is bad. Intel’s general freeze guidance lists inadequate PSU capacity or poor handling of a power spike among possible causes. Its Arc A770 gaming-reboot guidance calls for checking the supply against the graphics system’s requirements. Before considering a PSU change, identify the exact CPU, GPU, and PSU models and check the applicable manufacturer requirements.

Memory problems are another possibility. Intel lists faulty memory or an improperly seated DIMM among potential causes of freezes. Reseating RAM or a graphics card means opening the computer and handling internal components: do it only if you are comfortable with the procedure, with the machine shut down and disconnected, and in accordance with the manufacturer’s service instructions. Otherwise, use OEM or professional support. Component reseating and testing are not proof that memory or the graphics card caused the original symptom.
Escalate when the basic checks do not isolate the cause
Use the computer maker’s hardware tests or contact its support team if the freeze continues, particularly for a laptop, prebuilt, all-in-one, or warranty-covered system. For an experienced desktop builder, testing one component at a time or substituting a known-good part can help isolate a fault. Changing several parts or settings at once makes the result harder to interpret and can introduce new problems.
More invasive steps have different levels of risk: log review and disconnecting a peripheral are low-risk and reversible; driver rollback is generally reversible; BIOS changes, internal reseating, and part substitution require more care and experience. If a cooling problem is confirmed and a cooler replacement is being considered, compatibility depends on the CPU socket, the processor’s thermal requirements, physical clearance, and case airflow. Without the exact PC configuration, no particular cooler or replacement part can be recommended reliably.
