Start with a wired USB mouse and keyboard connected directly to the Xbox. Test them on the Xbox dashboard, then test them in a game that explicitly supports mouse and keyboard input. Xbox supports these peripherals for navigation in select games and apps, so a keyboard that works on the home screen can still be rejected by a particular game. If the device also fails on another computer or compatible device, repair or replace the peripheral instead of changing Xbox settings.
Why your mouse or keyboard works in one place but not another
Xbox describes the feature this way: “Use wired USB mice and keyboards for navigation in select games and apps, and—with a keyboard—getting around on XBOX.” The important qualification is “select.” Xbox dashboard recognition proves that the console can see the peripheral; it does not prove that every installed game accepts mouse and keyboard controls.
There are three separate possibilities:
- Peripheral failure: the mouse, keyboard, cable, battery, or wireless receiver is defective or unpowered.
- Connection problem: a hub, loose connector, damaged USB port, or receiver placement prevents the Xbox from receiving input.
- Game or app limitation: the title does not support mouse and keyboard, or its controls must be enabled in its own menus.
Work through the checks below in order. Each step is designed to separate those causes without replacing hardware prematurely.
1. Check the game or app before changing hardware
Test the Xbox dashboard
Connect the keyboard and mouse and use them to move around the Xbox home screen. A keyboard that can navigate the dashboard is being detected by the console. If neither device responds there, continue with the physical and USB checks in the next sections.

Check the title’s own support information
If the dashboard responds but one game does not, open that game’s current control or accessibility documentation and its input settings. Mouse and keyboard support is determined by the individual title, not just by the console. Some supported games require you to select or enable keyboard-and-mouse controls in the game menus.
Do not treat a successful dashboard test as a guarantee that the game should work. Compare the behavior in a title known to support mouse and keyboard. If the devices work there, the original game is the likely limitation rather than the Xbox or the peripherals.
2. Connect both devices directly to the Xbox
- Unplug the mouse and keyboard from any USB hub, dock, extension, or adapter.
- Plug each device directly into an Xbox USB port.
- Try a different USB port if the first one produces no response.
- Wait briefly for the console to detect the device, then test dashboard navigation again.
- Launch a title that supports mouse and keyboard and check its input settings.
Removing the hub is important because it eliminates an additional power and connection point. Microsoft’s hardware troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends trying another USB port and removing a USB hub when diagnosing input failures.

3. Check power, cables, connectors and moving parts
Keyboard and mouse power
- Charge rechargeable devices fully, or install fresh batteries in battery-powered models.
- For a wired device, make sure the cable is firmly seated at both the peripheral and the Xbox.
- For a wireless model, confirm that its power switch is on before testing the receiver.
Inspect for physical damage
- Look for bent, cracked, or loose USB plugs.
- Check the cable for cuts, severe kinks, or sections that become disconnected when moved.
- Inspect a wireless USB receiver for damage and make sure it is fully inserted.
- On a mouse, clear anything blocking the sensor. On a keyboard, check for keys or debris that prevent normal key movement.
These checks address the most basic causes first: no power, an intermittent cable, a loose connector, a blocked sensor, or a key that cannot move. If the device remains unresponsive after a direct connection and a second USB port, continue with the isolation test rather than repeatedly reconnecting the same setup.
4. Determine whether the peripheral itself has failed
- Disconnect the mouse or keyboard from the Xbox.
- Connect it to another computer or compatible device.
- Test ordinary input there, including several keyboard keys and mouse movement or clicks.
- Repeat the test with the other peripheral if you have one.
If a device fails on the second device as well, the fault is probably in that peripheral, its cable, its batteries, or its receiver. Repair or replacement is more appropriate than changing Xbox settings. A wired USB keyboard or wired USB mouse is the clearest replacement category because Xbox explicitly names wired USB devices for navigation in supported games and apps; no replacement can be assumed to work in every title.
If the device works normally elsewhere, keep it connected directly to the Xbox and continue checking port choice, wireless receiver behavior, game support, and console software.

5. Troubleshoot a wireless mouse or keyboard receiver
Wireless devices that use a USB receiver are not the same as Bluetooth-only devices. For a receiver-based model:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Use the receiver supplied with that exact mouse or keyboard.
- Insert the receiver directly into the Xbox, not into a hub.
- Try another Xbox USB port.
- Confirm the device has charged batteries or adequate charge and is switched on.
- Test the receiver and peripheral on another compatible device if possible.
- After the Xbox detects the device, retest in the dashboard and then in a supported game.
Do not assume that Bluetooth pairing is supported for every model. Official Xbox material does not provide a complete Bluetooth compatibility matrix, so compatibility must be checked for the exact device and the exact game. A Bluetooth device that pairs successfully with a phone or computer may still not be accepted by the Xbox in the way you expect.
Wired USB versus wireless receiver
| Setup | What it eliminates | What can still prevent input | Best diagnostic use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired USB mouse or keyboard | Battery, radio link, and receiver variables | Unsupported game, damaged cable, bad connector, USB-port problem, or defective peripheral | Use as the baseline connection because Xbox explicitly documents wired USB navigation in select games and apps |
| Wireless model with USB receiver | None of the wired cable variables | Low battery, receiver damage, wrong receiver, USB-port or hub issue, model-specific compatibility, or unsupported game | Test the supplied receiver directly on multiple Xbox ports |
| Bluetooth-only model | No USB receiver to test | Xbox and title may not support that Bluetooth device; the official material does not establish universal Bluetooth compatibility | Verify support for the exact model and game before treating pairing failure as an Xbox fault |
Dashboard navigation versus in-game support
| Observed behavior | Most likely area to investigate | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Neither mouse nor keyboard works on the dashboard | Power, cable, receiver, USB port, hub, or failed peripheral | Connect directly, remove the hub, try another port, check power and damage, then test on another device |
| Keyboard works on the dashboard but not in one game | Title-specific support or an in-game control setting | Check that game’s current control/accessibility documentation and enable or select keyboard-and-mouse input if offered |
| Devices work in one supported game but not another | Different support policies between titles | Use the second game’s documentation and input menu; do not infer universal support from the first game |
| Device works on another computer but nowhere on Xbox | Xbox port, receiver path, console software, or compatibility | Repeat direct-port and receiver checks, then verify the title and device support |
| Device fails on Xbox and another device | Peripheral or its power path | Repair or replace the mouse, keyboard, cable, batteries, or receiver as appropriate |
6. Retest in a supported title
- Leave the mouse and keyboard connected directly to the Xbox.
- Open a game known to support mouse and keyboard controls.
- Open the game’s control, input, or accessibility settings.
- Select or enable keyboard-and-mouse controls if the title provides that option.
- Test movement, clicking, and several keyboard keys in gameplay.
If the devices function in this title but not the original one, the result identifies a game-support difference. If they fail in the supported title and on the dashboard, return to the port, power, receiver, and second-device checks rather than assuming the game is responsible.

What to do when only one device fails
Keyboard fails, mouse works
Check the keyboard’s charge or batteries, cable, connector, and individual keys on another device. If it works elsewhere, try a different Xbox USB port without a hub and verify that the game has a keyboard-and-mouse option. If it fails elsewhere too, replace or repair the keyboard or its cable.
Mouse fails, keyboard works
Check the mouse’s power, cable or receiver, and sensor for blockage. Test movement and clicks on another device, then try another Xbox port directly. A game may accept keyboard input while not supporting mouse input, so confirm the title’s documentation and settings before replacing the mouse.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBoth fail together
Because two independent peripherals failing at once can indicate a shared connection issue, remove any hub, connect each directly, and test another Xbox USB port. Verify power on both devices and test at least one on another compatible device. These results distinguish a common Xbox connection problem from two separate peripheral faults.

Common mistakes that waste time
- Replacing hardware after testing only one game: a title may not support the devices even when the dashboard does.
- Leaving a USB hub in the chain: diagnose with direct connections first.
- Assuming wireless means Bluetooth: a USB-receiver device and a Bluetooth-only device follow different compatibility paths.
- Skipping the second-device test: this is the fastest way to identify a failed mouse, keyboard, cable, battery, or receiver.
- Ignoring in-game settings: some titles require keyboard-and-mouse controls to be selected or enabled.
- Expecting a universal compatibility list: support varies by device and title, and the available official Xbox material does not establish a complete Bluetooth matrix or a fixed count of supported games.
A compact decision path
- Does the keyboard or mouse work on the Xbox dashboard? If no, connect directly, remove the hub, try another USB port, check power and physical condition, and test the device elsewhere.
- Does it work on another computer or compatible device? If no, repair or replace the peripheral. If yes, continue with Xbox port, receiver, and compatibility checks.
- Does it work in a title known to support mouse and keyboard? If yes, investigate the original game’s support and settings. If no, repeat the direct-connection and receiver checks and verify the exact device’s compatibility.
- Is the device Bluetooth-only? Do not infer support from successful pairing elsewhere; verify the exact model and game.
When a wired replacement makes sense
After you have removed the hub, tried another Xbox USB port, checked power and damage, and tested the peripheral on another device, a failed mouse or keyboard is the strongest case for replacement. Choose a wired USB model when you want the simplest baseline: it removes battery and wireless-receiver variables and matches the connection type Xbox explicitly documents for navigation in select games and apps.
Even with a new wired USB device, check the target game’s support and input settings. Hardware that is detected by Xbox can still be unusable in a title that does not implement mouse and keyboard controls.
