If your Logitech F710 will not connect or keeps dropping out, check its batteries and USB receiver first, then improve receiver placement. The F710 is a 2.4 GHz wireless controller that connects through a USB nano receiver—not Bluetooth—so there is no Bluetooth pairing step. If Windows detects it but a game does not, check the controller’s physical X/D input-mode switch.

1. Check the F710’s batteries and power

  1. Turn the controller off, then reseat its batteries. Check that they make contact with the battery terminals.
  2. Try fresh AA batteries if the current ones may be depleted. Weak power can cause connection problems, but new batteries will not fix a USB receiver or game input-mode issue.
  3. Turn the controller back on and check whether it connects.

2. Check the USB receiver and port

  1. Make sure the F710’s USB nano receiver is firmly plugged in.
  2. Connect it directly to a USB port on the computer, rather than through a hub, switch, or extender. Logitech says a hub used with the F710 must have its own power supply, and its general wireless-device guidance favors a direct computer connection.
  3. If the receiver is connected directly but the controller still fails, try another full-powered USB port. Logitech notes that the receiver works best in a full-powered port.

3. Improve receiver placement if the connection drops

A receiver hidden behind a computer case may have a weaker path to the controller, and nearby wireless or electrical devices can interfere with the signal. Move the receiver to a closer or front-facing USB port, and keep it away from other wireless devices where practical. If you have the included USB extension cable, use it to position the receiver closer to the controller. Logitech specifically recommends the cable when the wireless connection fails intermittently.

4. Check whether Windows detects the controller

On Windows, open the Game Controllers panel and look for the F710. Logitech’s getting-started guide says the expected status is OK and the controller ID is 1. If Windows does not show the gamepad, return to the battery, receiver, and USB-port checks, then restart the computer.

5. Match the X/D switch to the game

The F710 has a physical switch for XInput and DirectInput. A game may fail to respond even when Windows detects the controller if the selected mode does not match the game’s input support.

Logitech G F710 Wireless Gamepad with USB Nano Receiver - Grey/Black
  • The 2.4 GHz wireless connection uses a tiny Plug-and-Forget Nano-receiver that stays in your USB port, even on laptops, for fast data transmission with minimal delays, dropouts, or interference.
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* Requires software installation
  • Dual vibration motors let you feel every hit, crash and explosion in games that support vibration feedback for a more realistic and immersive experience
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on game console controllers
Mode When to try it Behavior to know
XInput (X) Logitech recommends X as the starting point for new Windows games. Some older DirectInput games may need a different mode or configuration. In a DirectInput game using XInput, triggers may be combined and vibration may be unavailable, according to Logitech’s manual.
DirectInput (D) Try D for older games or when you need custom mappings. An XInput game may not work in DirectInput mode without switching or configuring input, according to Logitech’s manual.

Move the switch to the mode suited to the game, then test again. If neither mode works, the game may not support either input standard; check its controller settings or documentation.

6. Restart and test another computer

After checking the batteries, receiver, port, and mode, restart the computer and try again. If possible, connect the F710 and its receiver to another computer. If the same problem follows the controller and receiver, a hardware problem becomes more plausible; if it works on the other computer, the original computer’s USB or software environment may be involved. This is an isolation check, not proof that a particular part has failed.

Windows driver fixes: note the version limit

Logitech’s F710 recognition workaround applies specifically to Windows 8.x. It describes opening Set up USB game controllers and, if the F710 still does not appear, switching X/D or trying another receiver port. That guidance does not establish the correct procedure for Windows 10 or Windows 11, so do not assume the Windows 8.x steps apply to those versions.

Logitech’s support pages state that the Logitech Connection Utility is no longer supported or maintained. Do not treat it as a current, maintained fix or assume it will pair an arbitrary replacement receiver with an F710. Verify exact receiver compatibility and a supported pairing method before considering a replacement.
