Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your PC starts straight into Windows after an update, that alone does not mean Linux was erased. First check the firmware’s one-time boot menu for an Ubuntu or other Linux entry; if it still boots Linux, correct the startup order. If the entry is missing or GRUB fails, use live recovery media in the same UEFI or Legacy mode as the installation and follow your distribution’s bootloader instructions. Before changing firmware settings, locate your BitLocker recovery key: a boot-order change can trigger a recovery prompt.
Identify what is failing before changing anything
“Linux disappeared” can describe several different problems. Note exactly what happens when you turn on the computer:
- Windows starts without a menu: the firmware may be selecting Windows Boot Manager first, even if Linux is still installed.
- The Linux entry is missing from the firmware menu: the Linux boot entry or its EFI boot files may be unavailable, or firmware may be using a different boot mode.
- GRUB appears but reports an error: the bootloader is present, but its configuration or the path to Linux may need attention.
- Windows also fails to start: this may be a Windows boot problem rather than a Linux bootloader problem.
- A Secure Boot warning appears: firmware may be rejecting a boot component under its current trust or revocation policy.
The fact that the symptom appeared after a Windows update establishes timing, not that the update deleted Linux. Avoid formatting the EFI System Partition, reinstalling Linux, clearing the TPM, or running broad partition-repair commands as first steps.
Check the firmware boot menu and startup order
Before repairing partitions, open the computer’s one-time boot menu or UEFI setup and look for an Ubuntu or other Linux entry. The key and menu labels vary by manufacturer; use the computer maker’s instructions if you do not know how to open it. Microsoft notes that a change to boot order can alter the system measurement BitLocker checks and prompt for the recovery key, so find that key before changing startup settings (Microsoft BitLocker FAQ).

If the Linux entry is present and starts Linux
Select the Linux entry from the one-time boot menu. If Linux starts, the immediate issue is likely the firmware’s startup selection, not a missing Linux installation. Use the manufacturer’s UEFI setup instructions to move the intended Linux or GRUB entry ahead of Windows Boot Manager. Keep the BitLocker recovery key available for the next Windows startup.
If the Linux entry is present but does not start
Record the exact error and whether Secure Boot is enabled. A visible entry that fails is different from Windows simply being first in the boot order; proceed to the relevant GRUB or Secure Boot checks below rather than repeatedly changing the order.
If the Linux entry is absent
Do not assume the Linux partitions are gone. Continue with firmware-mode checks and, if needed, boot live media to inspect and repair the Linux boot path.

Match UEFI or Legacy mode before using recovery media
Repair media should be booted in the same firmware mode used by the installed systems. Ubuntu’s UEFI guidance says that if the other installed operating systems use UEFI, Ubuntu should also be installed in UEFI mode; if they use Legacy mode, Ubuntu should use Legacy mode too (Ubuntu UEFI guidance). Mixing modes can make a repair target a boot path the firmware is not using.
Check the firmware’s boot menu for entries that distinguish UEFI from Legacy, and consult your computer maker’s documentation if the mode is unclear. When preparing an Ubuntu live USB, choose the boot-menu option corresponding to the installed system’s mode. The USB provides access to recovery tools; it is not by itself a guaranteed repair.
Repair GRUB from a Linux live session
If Linux remains on disk but its boot entry or GRUB menu is unavailable, boot Ubuntu installation media in the matching mode and select the live-session option. Ubuntu’s Community Help Wiki describes using Boot-Repair from a live session and following its recommended repair flow (Ubuntu Boot-Repair instructions). These instructions are Ubuntu-specific and community-maintained; Fedora, Debian, Mint, and other distributions should use their current distribution-specific bootloader recovery guidance.

Before attempting manual repair
- Identify the Linux root partition.
- If the installation uses UEFI, identify the EFI System Partition.
- Confirm the target disk, mount points, and whether the machine is booted in UEFI or Legacy mode.
- Use instructions for the installed distribution and its current release.
There is no safe universal grub-install command for every distribution and disk layout. Do not copy a command without verifying its target and mount points; an incorrect target can make recovery harder.
Use Windows recovery only when Windows boot files are the problem
If Windows itself will not start, Windows Recovery Environment or Windows installation media may be appropriate. Microsoft documents BCDBoot for adding Windows boot options and repairing Windows boot files (Microsoft BCDBoot command reference). BCDBoot addresses the Windows boot path; it does not reinstall GRUB or repair a Linux bootloader.

Check Secure Boot without treating it as the default culprit
Secure Boot checks whether boot software is trusted under the firmware’s policy. A Linux boot failure can therefore involve signed shim or bootloader trust, or a revocation state, even when the Linux files remain on disk. Microsoft describes Secure Boot as the initial boot-up protection followed by Trusted Boot (Microsoft Secure Boot and Trusted Boot).

Do not make disabling Secure Boot the routine first fix. Check the Linux distribution’s current guidance for signed boot components and review the firmware trust settings for the specific machine. Microsoft’s guidance for Linux distribution maintainers says an existing 2011-signed shim can continue to boot if the firmware’s Secure Boot database still contains the Microsoft Corporation UEFI CA 2011 and neither the shim nor its SBAT level has been revoked (Microsoft Linux distribution certificate-transition guidance).
Certificate timing and revocation state are subject to change. Microsoft says 2011 certificates begin expiring in June 2026, and describes the 2023 certificate transition for Linux distributions as beginning June 26, 2026 (Microsoft OEM Secure Boot guidance; Microsoft Linux distribution certificate-transition guidance). Those dates do not establish that a particular PC’s failure is certificate-related; check current firmware and distribution-specific guidance before changing trust settings.
Do ordinary Windows updates require BitLocker suspension?
Microsoft says standard quality and feature updates require no user action for BitLocker. That is separate from firmware or Secure Boot database changes: in some configurations, Microsoft says suspension may be needed for certain non-Microsoft firmware or Secure Boot changes. A boot-order change can independently prompt for the recovery key, so make sure you can retrieve it before editing firmware startup settings (Microsoft BitLocker FAQ).
