A platform refresh can fix previews for future shares, but it may not change a post that has already been published. Troubleshoot each service separately.
Why a link preview can show the wrong text
A social preview is assembled from information the platform extracts from the page, not necessarily from the title you see in your browser or a search result. LinkedIn says its share box relies on Open Graph Protocol (OGP) and/or oEmbed metadata for the title, description, and image. If metadata is missing, content may not be pulled or other page content may appear instead. LinkedIn’s URL-sharing guidance explains this.
The problem usually falls into one of two categories: the page is publishing incorrect or conflicting metadata, or the platform is still showing information it previously stored. Inspecting the platform’s extracted values helps distinguish them.
Check the metadata the page publishes
- Inspect the live page’s HTML. View the page source or use the CMS’s social-sharing settings, then find its Open Graph tags.
- Verify page-specific values. Check that
og:titleandog:descriptioncontain the intended text, and thatog:urlidentifies the URL you are sharing. LinkedIn also listsog:imageamong the fields its sharing module requires. LinkedIn’s sharing-module requirements list these fields. - Check the canonical URL. Make sure it does not point to a different page than the one you intend to share.
- Review the generated HTML, not just the editor. If a CMS plugin or theme adds social metadata, check the response it generates for conflicting site-wide defaults and page-level tags. Which value a platform selects can depend on the candidates it finds.
A visible browser title or search snippet is not proof that a social crawler extracted the same text. LinkedIn describes its content-ingestion process as examining and validating metadata candidates before selecting values. LinkedIn’s engineering article describes that process.

Inspect and refresh the affected platform
Open LinkedIn Post Inspector, enter the URL, and inspect the preview and extracted metadata. If the page’s metadata is correct, use the inspector to refresh LinkedIn’s URL data, then create a new post to check the updated preview. LinkedIn says the refresh applies to new posts: “The preview for any existing posts with this URL will remain the same.” The inspector cannot be relied on to rewrite an already-published post. Secondary troubleshooting guides commonly point to Meta’s Sharing Debugger and its “Scrape Again” action to request a fresh scrape. The current official Meta workflow is not established here, so confirm the tool’s current interface rather than treating that label or process as guaranteed. Other services
Use the affected service’s own current preview inspector or refresh tool, if it offers one. A LinkedIn refresh does not refresh the preview stored by Facebook, X, Slack, or another service. Do not assume that different platforms share one cache or that a single refresh updates every network.
What to do when the preview is still wrong
- The inspector shows the wrong title or description: Treat this as a page or extraction issue, not merely a stale display. Recheck the live HTML, the page-specific tags, the URL being inspected, and any canonical URL. Correct the generated response and inspect it again.
- The inspector shows the right values, but a new share is wrong: Confirm you refreshed the exact URL on the platform where the error appears. Then try a new share and check whether that platform’s preview has updated.
- Only an existing LinkedIn post is wrong: LinkedIn explicitly says Post Inspector refreshes do not change previews on existing posts. Use a new post if you need to show the refreshed preview.
- Only one platform is affected: Debug that platform’s extraction and stored URL data independently; correct results from another service do not establish what this one extracted.
Some secondary guides suggest adding a harmless query parameter to make a service treat a URL as new. This is platform-dependent advice, not a standards-based guarantee. It changes the URL you share and can affect analytics, routing, canonicalization, or duplicate-content handling, so prefer the platform’s own refresh mechanism when available. LinkedIn’s refresh instructions describe its own method.

How long should I wait for a link preview to update?
There is no universal refresh time established across platforms. Use the affected platform’s inspector or refresh tool and verify its extracted preview instead of relying on a fixed waiting period.

Will refreshing LinkedIn’s URL preview change an old post?
No. LinkedIn says Post Inspector refresh affects new posts; existing posts with that URL keep their old preview.
