If your gaming mouse skips, stutters, or disconnects, first identify which problem you have: erratic cursor tracking usually points to the sensor, surface, settings, or wireless conditions; a mouse that vanishes or reconnects points more toward power, the receiver, cable, or USB connection. Work through the checks below in order, changing one thing at a time so you can see what helps.
1. Check power and basic tracking
Recharge or replace the battery
For a wireless mouse, fully charge it or install a fresh battery before investigating signal problems. A low battery can make behavior unreliable, and this is a quick variable to rule out.
Temporarily lower sensitivity
If the mouse stays connected but the cursor jumps or loses tracking, reduce sensitivity temporarily in the manufacturer’s software if that control is available. Logitech also recommends surface tuning on supported gaming mice. These are diagnostic checks, not a guarantee that sensitivity or tuning is the cause. 2. Clean the sensor and test another surface
Dust or an unsuitable surface can interrupt optical tracking. Turn the mouse over and inspect the sensor opening. SteelSeries recommends updating firmware through GG on supported devices, then using compressed air to clear the sensor if the issue continues. Do not spray liquid cleaner onto the sensor: SteelSeries warns that liquid can permanently damage it. Follow the instructions for your particular model.

Try the mouse on a different, clean surface. SteelSeries suggests a single-color matte surface for optical mice; for laser mice, it suggests a matte or glossy dark surface. 3. If a wireless mouse disconnects or stutters, check its receiver and surroundings
First bring the receiver closer to the mouse and temporarily disconnect nearby wireless devices. If the symptom changes, receiver placement or radio activity may be contributing. Logitech’s guidance for its gaming mice is to keep the receiver within 20 cm of the mouse and the mouse and receiver at least 2 m from wireless routers and other 2.4 GHz devices. These are Logitech recommendations, not universal placement limits for every mouse.

For Razer HyperPolling wireless operation specifically, Razer recommends keeping the dongle in line of sight and within 30 cm, away from active USB 3 hubs. Its wired HyperPolling setup should use a direct native USB connection. Apply these steps only if they match your device and setup; see Razer’s HyperPolling guidance and Logitech’s wireless tracking guidance.
4. If a wired mouse disconnects, isolate the USB connection
- Connect directly to another USB port. Avoid a hub while testing if possible. Logitech also suggests trying USB 2.0 if the mouse is currently connected through USB 3.0.
- Test on another computer. If the same disconnect occurs there, the issue is less likely to be limited to the original computer’s port or configuration.
- Check USB power management if needed. Logitech lists disabling USB Selective Suspend as a troubleshooting step for connection problems. The menu path varies by operating system and version, so use the current instructions for your OS rather than assuming a fixed path.

5. Lower polling rate when mouse use coincides with FPS drops
Polling rate, also called report rate, is how often a mouse sends its position to the computer. It is a separate issue from a cursor that loses tracking or a device that disconnects. If the game’s frame rate drops when you move or use the mouse, temporarily lower the rate in the mouse software and compare the result; testing another game can help determine whether the problem is game-specific.
Logitech says rates above 1 kHz can cause FPS drops for some users because of added USB traffic. Razer notes that some PCs may not have enough resources to process 8,000 reports per second with HyperPolling. 6. When to contact the manufacturer
If the mouse still skips or disconnects after surface, power, receiver or port checks—and especially if the same problem occurs on another computer—look up support for the exact model. Firmware update procedures and available warranty options differ by product and region, so check the manufacturer’s current model-specific support information. Logitech notes that its Firmware Update Tool is no longer supported or maintained; do not rely on that utility for updates.
