Check Epic Games Server Status and your platform’s service-status page before changing anything. If services are operating, start the update from the platform’s official control, restart the game and device, and test your connection. A wired LAN connection, cache cleanup, file verification, free storage, and (only when necessary) a reinstall resolve most local failures.
Use the platform section below for exact menu paths. The least disruptive checks come first; reinstalling is the final local step before contacting Epic, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, or your mobile-store support team.
Start with the right diagnosis
“Stuck” can mean several different things. Identify the symptom before deleting files:

An outage or service-side communication fault cannot be repaired by repeatedly restarting a local download. Epic specifically notes that the PlayStation and Nintendo “Checking for Updates” condition can result from miscommunication with Epic’s servers.

Use a low-risk order of operations
Work from the least disruptive action to the most disruptive. First check service status, then close Fortnite and restart the device. Next restart the modem or router and retry the official update command. After that, clear the relevant cache and verify PC files. Only then should you remove unused software, change network settings, move the installation, or reinstall. This order prevents you from downloading the entire game again when the actual cause is a temporary outage or a suspended queue.
Record the exact wording of any error before you dismiss it. A code that appears only once can still help Epic or the platform manufacturer identify whether the failure involves storage, authentication, networking, or local files. Note which platform is affected and whether other games or downloads work normally.
Use the official update command for your platform
Launching Fortnite normally is enough for an available PC update in the Epic Games Launcher, but consoles and mobile devices have explicit update controls.

If the command is missing, close Fortnite, wait briefly for the platform to refresh its license and download list, and open the same menu again. Do not interrupt a download merely because the progress percentage pauses while files are being unpacked or checked. A paused percentage does not by itself prove that the update has failed.
Fix a Fortnite update on PC
1. Check the error and requirements
Write down the complete error text or code. Search that exact wording in Epic Help rather than applying a generic registry or “optimizer” fix. Confirm that the computer still meets Fortnite’s minimum requirements and that the installation drive is connected, writable, and has enough free space for both the download and temporary files.
2. Verify the game files
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Library and locate Fortnite.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the game.
- Choose Manage, then Verify (the label can appear as Verify files).
- Allow the scan and repair to finish, then relaunch the update.
Verification replaces damaged or incomplete files without removing the whole installation. Keep the launcher open until it reports completion. If the scan finds nothing, continue to the cache and launcher checks instead of repeatedly running verification.
3. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
Exit Fortnite and quit Epic Games Launcher completely, including its notification-area process. Reopen the launcher and clear its web cache using Epic’s documented cache-clearing procedure, then sign in and retry. Cache removal affects launcher temporary data, not your account progress. If the launcher still shows an old state after clearing the cache, close it again and restart Windows before trying the update command.

4. Apply the remaining PC checks in order
- Update the computer’s video driver from the graphics manufacturer’s official software.
- Right-click Epic Games Launcher and choose Run as administrator, then retry the update.
- Temporarily close background applications that can lock files, consume bandwidth, or overlay the game.
- Check the installation drive for file-system errors and confirm that security software is not quarantining Fortnite files.
- Try installing or moving Fortnite to a different healthy drive if the current drive reports errors or lacks space.
- As a last local repair, reinstall the launcher and Fortnite. Epic’s PC troubleshooting guidance also lists removing the FortniteGame folder after the earlier repairs fail; back up any files you need before deleting it.
Reinstalling can require downloading the entire game again, so do not use it as the first response to a temporary server outage. Make sure the launcher is signed into the account that owns the installation and that the destination drive remains connected throughout the download.
Fix “Checking for Updates” or a failed update on PlayStation
1. Confirm service availability
Check Epic Games Server Status and PlayStation Network status. If either service reports an incident, wait for the service to recover before changing local settings.
2. Run the manual update and close Fortnite
- Open Library, highlight Fortnite, press Options, and choose Check for Update.
- If the screen remains on Checking for Updates, close Fortnite completely rather than leaving it suspended.
- Restart the PlayStation and try the same update command again.
3. Stabilize the connection
Reset the modem or router, then reconnect the console. Epic’s PlayStation guidance states, “LAN/wired connection is highly recommended.” If your setup allows it, try a wired LAN connection with a Cat6 Ethernet cable; the cable does not bypass an Epic outage, and its actual result depends on your router, console, and internet plan.
4. Restore licenses and use the documented manual network values
Restore licenses from the PlayStation account settings, then configure the connection again. If the problem persists, use manual DNS values 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, set MTU to 1500, save the connection, and restart the console. Test the connection before launching Fortnite. Change these values only after checking service status; DNS and MTU adjustments cannot correct a server-side incident.

5. Clear cache or reinstall only after the network checks
Use the PlayStation safe-mode cache-clearing option appropriate to your model, power-cycle the console, and retry. If the update still fails, reinstall Fortnite. Contact PlayStation Support when a reinstall and the documented network steps do not change the behavior.
Fix a Fortnite update on Xbox
Manual update
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open My Games & Apps, then See All and Games.
- Highlight Fortnite and select Update when the option appears.
When the update will not start
Check Xbox service status and any known-issues notice first. Quit Fortnite, restart the console, and retry the update from My Games & Apps. A full power cycle can clear a stalled download queue and temporary system data. If other Xbox downloads are also failing, treat the problem as a platform or network issue rather than a Fortnite-only problem.
Clear space before reinstalling
If the console reports insufficient storage, clear the cache first and delete unused games or applications. Reopen the update after space is available. If the update remains broken, reinstall Fortnite; preserve any account credentials needed to sign back in. Do not delete additional games until you have checked how much space the update requires and identified what can safely be removed.

Fix a Fortnite update on Nintendo Switch
Manual update
- Connect the Switch to the internet.
- Highlight Fortnite on the HOME menu.
- Press + or −.
- Choose Software Update, then Via the Internet.
When Switch shows “Checking for Updates”
Check Epic Games Server Status, close Fortnite, and restart the Switch. Follow Nintendo’s save-data guidance before taking any step that could affect local data. In the internet-connection settings, set DNS manually to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, test the connection, and relaunch Fortnite. If the test fails, resolve the Switch connection problem before attempting another Fortnite update.

Clear the Switch cache, then retry the update. Reinstall Fortnite only if the cache and connection test do not help. Contact Nintendo Support if the console cannot update other software or the Fortnite reinstall also fails.
Fix the mobile version
Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi or cellular connection, open the Epic Games Launcher app, select Fortnite, and press Update. On Android, use Google Play’s app-update instructions when Epic directs you there. Check available storage before starting and keep the connection active for the entire download. If the store reports an account, payment-profile, or device-compatibility error, resolve that store issue rather than repeatedly reinstalling Fortnite.
When the mobile update is not listed, close the launcher or store, reopen it, and check the Fortnite entry again. If other apps also cannot update, troubleshoot the store connection or account first; a Fortnite reinstall will not repair a store-wide problem.
Improve a slow or stalled download
Separate a true stall from unpacking
Download speed can show zero while the device verifies, decrypts, or writes files. Watch the launcher or console’s disk-activity indicator and available-space value. If disk activity continues, allow the process to finish. If both network and disk activity remain idle for an extended period, pause and resume once, then restart the game and device.
Use the least congested connection
- Prefer wired LAN where available; Epic explicitly recommends it for PlayStation troubleshooting.
- Stop other large downloads, cloud backups, video streams, and game updates on the same network.
- Move close to the Wi-Fi access point or use the less-congested band supported by your equipment.
- Restart the modem or router, wait for it to reconnect fully, and test another device before retrying Fortnite.
- Avoid repeatedly changing DNS while a service outage is active; DNS cannot repair an Epic-side incident.
Interpret the result
If other devices are also slow, the bottleneck is probably the home network or internet service. If only Fortnite is slow while other downloads are normal, check Epic and platform status and leave the update running long enough to complete file processing. If speed improves after a wired connection, retain that connection for the update; it does not guarantee a faster result on every network.
Do not judge the update solely by a fluctuating percentage. Compare network activity, disk activity, and the remaining free-space figure. Rebooting repeatedly can restart file checks and make a large update appear to move backward, so give each restart or resume attempt time to complete.

Free storage and cache checks
An update may need temporary working space in addition to the size shown for the patch. When a console runs out of disk space during installation or updating, Epic advises clearing cache and deleting unused games or applications. On PC, remove or move large files from the installation drive and empty the recycle bin before retrying.
Cache clearing is reversible and removes temporary data; it does not replace a complete reinstall. Power-cycling after cache cleanup ensures the platform rebuilds its temporary state before you run the update again. Check storage again after clearing the cache because temporary files can be recreated during verification.

Common pitfalls to avoid
- Do not reinstall during a confirmed Epic or platform outage.
- Do not change several network settings at once; you will not know which change mattered.
- Do not delete the FortniteGame folder or other local files before trying verification and cache cleanup.
- Do not assume a zero network reading means the process is dead while disk activity shows verification or file writing.
- Do not keep Fortnite suspended while trying to force a manual console update; close it first.
When to escalate
Contact Epic Support with the platform, exact error text, approximate time, and which documented steps you completed. Contact the platform manufacturer when its store, network test, cache, or other games also fail. Include screenshots only after removing account identifiers. If a status page shows an outage, wait for the incident to clear and then retry the official update command rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
Escalate sooner if the installation drive repeatedly reports errors, the console cannot update any software, or the same failure returns immediately after a clean reinstall. Those patterns point beyond a single Fortnite patch and are more useful to platform support than another round of random setting changes.

Other downloads, Wi-Fi interference, router congestion, or an Epic or platform service issue can reduce throughput. Stop competing traffic, restart the router, and use a wired LAN connection when possible.
