Check for damage first, test power with a known-working compatible charger, then use the restart instructions for your exact model. If the phone rings but its screen stays blank—or the phone is physically damaged—stop troubleshooting and arrange qualified service.
First, check for damage or moisture
Before charging, pressing buttons, or folding and unfolding the phone, look for cracks, impact marks, a bent or damaged enclosure, swelling, or signs that the device is wet. If you see any of these, do not keep trying to revive it or force the hinge or screen; follow the manufacturer’s safety guidance and seek service. Google cautions against using a physically damaged Pixel Fold, and Samsung recommends professional inspection when a Galaxy device is damaged. For a device that looks undamaged, remove a case or accessory only if it may be blocking a button or preventing the charging cable from seating properly.
Check whether the phone is getting power
- Connect the phone to a known-working outlet using an undamaged charger and cable compatible with your exact model. If possible, verify the outlet and accessories with another device.
- Make sure the cable is fully seated. Visually check the charging port for obstruction, but do not poke inside it or force the connector.
- Leave a possibly depleted phone connected for a while before judging the result. A completely drained Galaxy may not show a charging icon immediately; a Pixel may also respond slowly when its battery is very low. Use charging accessories approved for your device. Google’s recommendations apply to Pixel models, while Samsung recommends Samsung-certified accessories in its Galaxy guidance; there is no universal charger wattage that applies to every foldable.

Force-restart with the instructions for your phone
Button sequences vary by brand and model, so do not treat one combination as universal. A force-restart is different from a factory reset and is not intended to erase your data.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip
Samsung’s general Galaxy instructions say to hold the Side key and Volume Down key together for more than seven seconds, until the device restarts. If the documentation for your exact model specifies a different sequence or timing, follow that documentation. Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet will not turn on.

Google Pixel Fold
Google’s blank-screen instructions say to hold the Power button for about 35 seconds, wait about two minutes, then call the phone or use Find Hub to trigger a ring. Another foldable brand or model
Check the manufacturer’s support page or manual for the precise restart procedure. The Galaxy and Pixel instructions above should not be assumed to work on other foldables.

If the phone turns on but the screen stays black
Look for signs that the phone is operating: a ring, vibration, notification sound, or other response. If it rings while the screen remains blank, the phone may be running despite a display problem. Google recommends authorized repair for a Pixel in this situation; for other brands, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. Avoid repeated button combinations or opening the phone to investigate.
Arrange service if the inner display has cracks, lines, or black spots; the hinge or enclosure is damaged; or the screen remains nonfunctional after checking the charger and trying the correct restart. Samsung recommends service-center inspection for damaged or unresolved Galaxy failures, while Google recommends professional support for Pixel Fold repairs. If the phone becomes usable, back up important data before service. Repair outcomes, data handling, fees, and warranty eligibility depend on the model, fault, and region.

If the screen is visible but touch does not work
If you can use the phone’s buttons, restart it first. Samsung identifies moisture, gloves, dirty fingers or screen, debris or air under a protector, non-genuine accessories, and some settings as possible causes of Galaxy touch problems. Clean and dry the screen and your hands, and remove a non-genuine accessory if it could be interfering. Samsung guidance for Galaxy touchscreen problems.
On Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip inner screens, do not peel off the factory protective film or replace it with an unofficial film: Samsung warns that doing so can cause touch abnormalities or screen damage and recommends service-center replacement. If the film has already been removed, Samsung notes that touch sensitivity may need to be turned off in Display settings. The menu wording can vary by model and software version, so check the device’s current instructions or ask Samsung support.
