If your Fire TV Stick 4K remote won’t pair or respond, start with fresh AAA alkaline batteries, move within 10 feet (3 m) of the Fire TV, then press and hold Home for about 10 seconds. If that does not work, try the reset and restart steps below. You can also use the Fire TV app as a temporary controller while troubleshooting.
1. Check the batteries, power, and distance
- Confirm the Fire TV Stick is powered on. If its screen is blank or it appears unresponsive, check its power connection.
- Replace both remote batteries. Use a fresh pair of AAA alkaline batteries. Battery-cover designs vary by remote, so open yours according to its design rather than assuming a particular release method. Amazon identifies slow red blinking during its compatible-remote diagnostic as a low-battery signal. Amazon’s remote troubleshooting guidance recommends AAA alkaline batteries.
- Move close to the Fire TV. For pairing, keep the remote within 10 feet (3 m) of the device. Amazon’s initial-pairing instructions specify this range.
2. Pair it with the Home button
- Point the remote toward the Fire TV and press and hold Home for about 10 seconds.
- Watch the TV for an on-screen pairing prompt or confirmation.
- If it does not pair, remove the batteries, wait 30 seconds, reinstall them, and try holding Home again. Use fresh alkaline batteries if you have not already replaced the old ones.
Amazon gives this Home-button sequence for pairing a remote during setup and when pairing does not happen automatically: Pair Your Fire TV Remote.
3. Check the remote’s LED, if it has one
Some Fire TV remotes do not have an LED, so skip this check if yours lacks one. On compatible remotes, Amazon’s diagnostic sequence is:
- Press the Alexa Voice button and look for a flashing LED.
- Hold Rewind and Right together for three seconds.
- Press Menu, then press another remote button to see the LED signal.
Amazon associates these signals with the following conditions: remote troubleshooting guidance:

4. Reset most Fire TV remotes
Amazon’s reset sequence for most remotes involves disconnecting the Fire TV and pressing three remote buttons. Follow the steps in order:
- Disconnect the Fire TV from both power and HDMI for 60 seconds.
- On the remote, hold Left, Menu, and Back together for 12 seconds, then release them.
- Wait five seconds, then remove the remote batteries.
- Reconnect the Fire TV to power and HDMI. Wait for the on-screen message that detects the remote.
- Put the batteries back in and press Home. If it has not paired, hold Home for 10 seconds.
These steps are for most Fire TV remotes, not every model. Amazon specifies different procedures for the Basic Edition remote and first-generation Alexa Voice Remote. Identify your remote and use the matching instructions on Amazon’s remote reset page if you have one of those older types.

5. Restart the Fire TV and try pairing again
If you have not performed the full reset above, restart the Fire TV by unplugging it from power for five seconds, reconnecting it, and waiting for it to restart. Then press and hold Home on the remote to pair it. Amazon’s setup guidance gives this five-second restart step when pairing fails: Pair Your Fire TV Remote.
If you are following the reset sequence, use its 60-second disconnect instead; do not substitute the shorter restart step midway through that procedure.

6. Use the Fire TV app as a temporary controller
If the physical remote is unusable, Amazon’s Fire TV app can control the device and help you pair a remote. See Amazon’s Fire TV remote pairing guidance for the app option. This is a workaround while you troubleshoot, not proof that the remote itself is defective.
7. Pair a replacement only if needed
Try batteries, range, Home-button pairing, and the applicable reset or restart before replacing the remote. Amazon warns that “Not all remotes are compatible with every Fire TV device.” Check compatibility for your exact Fire TV Stick 4K generation and model before choosing a replacement; the Fire TV brand name alone does not establish compatibility. Amazon’s instructions for pairing another Fire TV remote explain the supported options.
