A text login means Fedora reached a console, but it does not identify why the graphical login or desktop failed to appear. Log in at the prompt and check the default boot target and the display-manager service before changing packages or graphics settings.
Run these checks from the text login
Enter your Fedora username and password at the console prompt. The password will not appear as you type. Then run:
systemctl get-default
systemctl is-active multi-user.target
systemctl status gdm.service
journalctl -b -p errgdm.service is the right service to inspect for GNOME Workstation, but Fedora spins and other desktop editions may use a different display manager. Identify the installed desktop before using a service name; Fedora’s graphical login documentation explains desktop login, while its KDE guidance illustrates that manager choices can differ.
In the boot journal, focus on errors that mention the display manager, graphics, or session startup. A reported error is not automatically the cause of the missing desktop. The target and service checks are practical troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee that one command fixes every Fedora installation; see the Fedora-focused troubleshooting steps at FossLinux.

If Fedora’s default target is text-only
If systemctl get-default returns multi-user.target, and a desktop is installed and worked previously, set graphical startup as the default:
sudo systemctl set-default graphical.target
systemctl get-default
sudo rebootThe second command should report graphical.target. This changes the target Fedora selects on subsequent boots; it does not install a desktop or repair a display manager that is failing. If no desktop is installed, changing the target alone will not create one. The target distinction is covered in the Fedora-focused guidance linked above.

If the default target is already graphical
If systemctl get-default reports graphical.target, investigate the installed display manager and its logs instead of changing the boot target.
Check the manager for your desktop
For GNOME Workstation, inspect GDM:
systemctl status gdm.serviceFor KDE or another Fedora variant, check the display manager that installation actually uses. Do not enable GDM simply because the graphical login is missing; Fedora variants can use alternatives, as the Fedora KDE guidance shows.

Use service and journal output to choose the next step
If the manager is failed or inactive, read its status details and the current-boot journal before reinstalling packages or changing drivers or SELinux settings. Look for a specific missing dependency or error. If the manager is active but no session appears, the problem may be later in session startup; these checks do not establish one universal fix for that case.
For more targeted advice, gather your Fedora release, desktop edition, graphics hardware, the relevant display-manager status, and errors from journalctl -b. Avoid guessing at driver or package changes without evidence tying them to the failure.

When rescue media is appropriate
A text console is usually enough to run the initial target, service, and journal checks; you do not need a USB drive just to try them. If the installed system is inaccessible or its own tools cannot repair it, Fedora’s installation documentation describes booting a rescue system from Fedora installation media or USB. Treat that as a fallback recovery route, not a fix for a routine target or display-manager problem.
