If Dressmaker shows green commission requirements but no Finish Dress button, the garment is usually incomplete at the construction level: a seam is still unstitched, a small panel was never attached, or a piece remains uncut. Rotate and zoom around the entire mannequin, inspect every fabric roll and both the Patterns and Accessories tabs, then save, quit, and reload. If the dress seems to have vanished, find its unfinished page in the sketchbook before using Restart Dress or the bell, because those controls can discard work.
What the error usually means
Dressmaker has separate checks for a commission and for the garment’s construction. A requirement card can turn green when you have selected the requested fabric, color, style, or decoration, while the dress itself still has an unstitched seam or unattached piece. The game does not enable Finish Dress until every pattern piece is on the mannequin and every seam between pieces has been sewn.
That distinction explains the most common report: “No Finish Dress button even though every requirement is green.” Treat the problem as one of three states:

The official Steam listing describes Dressmaker as a game in which you choose fabric, arrange and cut patterns, sew garments, add decorations, and submit dresses for reputation and coin. It lists Steam Cloud support. It identifies the game as developed by Cozy Lives and published by Free Lives, with a September 21, 2026 release date. Bug-specific behavior below comes from player reports and independent troubleshooting references, so individual workarounds are practical reports rather than guaranteed fixes.

Do this safe recovery sequence first
Use the following order. It starts with reversible inspection and postpones controls that may throw away cut material or the active commission.
- Stop cutting and do not press Restart Dress. If you already cut scraps, restarting can remove those scraps according to player reports.
- Inspect the mannequin in construction view. Rotate it a full 360 degrees and zoom in. Look at the front, back, sides, inside sleeves, beneath collars, cuffs, skirt edges, and any overlap where a sewing icon could be hidden.
- Check every fabric roll. Look for a small uncut collar, cuff, skirt tip, trim, or other panel. A single remaining piece can keep the dress from being finishable.
- Open both inventory tabs. Check Patterns for a cut panel that was never placed and Accessories for a decoration or trim that was cut but not attached.
- Sew every visible seam. A requirement card can be green while one seam remains unstitched. Select each sewing icon until no seam indicator remains.
- Save, quit, and reload. Save from the game’s normal menu, quit to the menu or desktop, launch the game again, and reopen the project. Reports indicate that a reload can make a missing panel or piece appear.
- Return through the sketchbook if necessary. Turn pages until you reach the unfinished dress, then select it and return to the mannequin. Do this before attempting any reset.
If the button appears after one of these steps, finish and submit the dress normally. If it does not, use the targeted checks below instead of repeatedly restarting the commission.
Fix a missing Finish Dress button
1. Search for hidden seams
The mannequin can hide a seam from the default camera angle. Rotate all the way around rather than stopping when the front looks complete. Zoom close enough to distinguish fabric edges and small sewing icons. Pay particular attention to:
- the inside and underside of sleeves;
- the back of the bodice and shoulder joins;
- the area under a collar or lapel;
- cuffs, hems, and narrow skirt tips;
- overlapping trim where one panel covers another.
A seam is complete only after the game registers the stitch, not merely when the two pieces look aligned. If an icon is partly hidden, rotate or zoom until you can select it and sew it.

2. Find an uncut piece on a fabric roll
Review every roll, including rolls that seem to have supplied all the large panels. The remaining item may be a small collar, cuff, trim, or skirt tip. The commission can look visually complete while that last piece is still waiting to be cut.
Cut the missing shape, place it on the mannequin, and sew each new seam. Do not assume that a green requirement card means every physical piece has been processed; the card describes the commission specification, not necessarily the construction checklist.
3. Check for a cut but unattached panel
Open Patterns and inspect the complete list of cut panels. Then open Accessories and check trims and decorations. A panel may have been cut successfully but left in inventory, making it easy to miss when you inspect only the mannequin.

Attach any loose item to its matching outline and sew all connecting seams. If the item appears in a tab but cannot be placed, save, quit, and reload before cutting another replacement; reports say a reload can restore a panel that failed to render or register.

4. Recheck construction after every correction
After sewing or attaching an item, rotate the mannequin once more. A new seam can be created on the opposite side of a panel, and that seam may not be visible from the angle at which you placed it. Continue until the mannequin, both tabs, and all fabric rolls show no remaining work.
When the unfinished dress is missing from the wardrobe or sketchbook
An unfinished project may still be saved even when it is not the project currently displayed. The reported recovery path is to open the sketchbook or journal and turn pages to the unfinished dress. A Steam Community user, Kattz, wrote on September 30, 2026: “As long as you haven’t clicked ‘finish dress’ you should be able to go back to any unfinished pieces by turning the page to them in your sketchbook.”
- Open the sketchbook or journal from the normal game interface.
- Turn forward and backward through the dress pages rather than checking only the currently selected commission.
- Select the page that shows the unfinished garment.
- Return to the mannequin and complete the missing construction step.
- Save before leaving the project again.
This is different from a system-wide save failure. If other projects and settings persist but one unfinished dress is not on the active page, navigation is the more likely explanation. If every project rolls back after quitting, continue to the Windows and Steam checks below.
Why Restart Dress and the bell can make recovery harder
Restart Dress
Restart Dress is not a harmless refresh when you have already cut fabric. A Steam Community report dated October 6, 2026 warns: “If you ‘cut’ your fabric scraps before you complete your dress, then go to Restart Dress, you will lose any fabric you already cut.” Treat the control as a destructive reset. Use it only when you deliberately accept losing the current cut pieces.

The bell
Do not ring the bell merely to escape a dress that appears stuck. A player report says the bell scraps the active dress and summons the next client. That changes the project state and can remove the evidence needed to diagnose the missing seam or panel. Inspect, save, reload, and check the sketchbook first.

If completed work disappears after every restart, the issue may be outside the dress construction screen. Windows Controlled Folder Access can block a game from writing to its save directory. Before changing protection settings or reinstalling anything, close the game and make a backup of:
C:Users<you>AppDataLocalLowCozy LivesDressmaker
Check Controlled Folder Access
- Open Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Open Ransomware protection, then Manage ransomware protection.
- Review Controlled folder access. If it is blocking Dressmaker, allow the game through the feature or use your organization’s approved policy for trusted applications.
- Launch Dressmaker, make a small non-destructive change, save, quit, and reopen it to test whether the change persists.
On a managed computer, security policy may prevent you from changing this setting. In that case, ask the administrator rather than disabling protection broadly.

- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Dressmaker and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Start the game and test saving with a minor change before returning to a long dress project.
Verification repairs damaged or missing installation files; it does not restore a save that was already overwritten. That is why backing up the local folder first matters.

Understand Steam Cloud limits
The Steam listing reports Steam Cloud support, but cross-platform transfers may not carry a save between Mac, Windows, and Steam Deck. If you switch platforms, do not assume that the newest local project will appear automatically. Preserve the local save folder on the original machine and test the target platform with a copy or a low-value project before relying on cloud synchronization.

Prevent the problem on future commissions
- Finish construction before cutting optional extras. Keep track of the required panels and seams before adding decorative work.
- Use a full camera sweep. Make a front, back, left, right, and close-up inspection part of your normal completion routine.
- Check both tabs before submitting. A cut item in Patterns or Accessories is not finished until it is attached and sewn.
- Save before leaving a project. Saving before opening another sketchbook page gives you a recoverable state if the next project loads incorrectly.
- Keep a local backup on Windows. Copy the Dressmaker folder while the game is closed, especially before changing security settings, verifying files, or moving between platforms.
- Use reset controls only intentionally. Restart and the bell change the active project; they are not substitutes for a reload.
What is known about these reports
Steam’s official listing confirms Dressmaker’s identity, release date, garment-building mechanics, and Steam Cloud feature. At the access time reported in the listing, it showed 98% positive English reviews from 11,606 reviews. That is a player-review figure, not a measurement of how often save or finishing bugs occur.

No cited source publishes a reliable incidence rate for these problems, so the steps above should be read as reported workarounds rather than guarantees.
