First find out where the buffering happens: in the broadcaster’s Castr preview or health data, for every viewer on YouTube, or only for some viewers, devices, or networks. That distinction determines whether to troubleshoot the encoder and upload connection or the viewer’s playback. Castr and YouTube publish configuration guidance, but it does not establish an India-wide outage or a cause specific to any Indian ISP.
1. Identify where the stream is buffering
Ask the broadcaster to check the Castr preview and input-health charts while affected viewers describe what they see on YouTube. Compare the same stream across viewers, devices, and networks where practical.

This is a diagnostic starting point, not a diagnosis of a particular Indian location or connection. Castr’s Help Center says most quality issues originate at the source encoder or streaming software, but check the observed symptoms before deciding where the problem lies.
2. If you are broadcasting: stabilize the encoder and upload
Use a sensible baseline for the encoder
Castr’s 2026 troubleshooting guidance recommends H.264/AVC video, AAC audio, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and 128 Kbps stereo audio. It suggests 30 fps as a baseline; use 60 fps only if the connection can sustain the higher bitrate. Follow the settings required by your selected platform and stream configuration.

Castr’s general bitrate recommendations are 3,500–6,500 Kbps for 1080p and 2,500–4,000 Kbps for 720p. If the upload link cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the resolution or bitrate rather than letting an unstable connection struggle to maintain it.
Check sustained upload capacity, not just a peak result
Castr recommends upload speed of at least 1.5 times the stream bitrate. Its example: a 5,000 Kbps stream calls for 7,500 Kbps (7.5 Mbps) upload capacity. This is Castr’s recommendation, not a measurement or guarantee for any Indian provider. A single speed-test peak does not establish that the connection will remain stable throughout a live stream.

Isolate local network and ingest conditions
- If the encoder computer is on Wi-Fi, try a wired Ethernet connection for a controlled comparison. Castr notes that Wi-Fi can introduce packet loss and latency spikes; a cable is a test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Pause downloads, video calls, cloud backups, and other bandwidth-heavy activity during a test stream.
- In Castr’s health charts, look for sudden video-bitrate drops and dropped frames. Castr identifies bitrate drops as a sign of connection trouble and dropped frames as a sign that the encoder or connection may be struggling.
- Choose the closest available Castr ingest server to the broadcaster’s physical location. If RTMP is unstable on a long-distance or unreliable link, Castr suggests trying SRT; neither protocol guarantees a cure.
Keep Castr and YouTube settings distinct
YouTube’s encoder-settings guide specifies RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, with CBR and a recommended 2-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed 4 seconds. Its bitrate table varies by codec and frame rate. For example, the page lists H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 720p30 as minimums, and recommended values of 14 Mbps and 8 Mbps respectively. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not viewer download thresholds; use YouTube’s table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate in use.
YouTube also advises choosing quality that fits the connection, testing with representative audio and motion before going live, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

3. If the Castr source is stable: improve viewer-side playback
Compare playback conditions before changing the stream for everyone
Ask affected viewers to try another supported browser or device and, if possible, a separate network. Castr’s October 2025 requirements document recommends using the latest browser version and lists Android 8.0+ and iOS 16+ mobile support. These are Castr playback recommendations, not a guarantee about every YouTube playback setup.
Offer a lower rendition or enable ABR
Castr recommends Adaptive Bitrate (ABR), which creates multiple quality levels so playback can adjust to a viewer’s connection, or reducing source quality and bitrate. It gives 720p at 3,000 Kbps as one option for broader reach. Castr’s setup guide lists selectable renditions such as 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p, and 240p.

In the Castr dashboard, enable ABR in the stream configuration. The setting cannot be changed while the stream is live, according to Castr’s setup guide, so you may need to disable the stream before changing it.
Use playback-speed recommendations carefully
Castr’s October 2025 document recommends minimum download speeds of 500 Kbps for 240p, 1 Mbps for 360p, 3 Mbps for 720p, 7 Mbps for 1080p, 12 Mbps for 1440p, and 22 Mbps for 4K and above. These are Castr playback recommendations, not YouTube-specific guarantees or measurements of Indian networks.

4. Troubleshoot without guessing at an India-specific cause
- Buffering coincides with Castr bitrate drops: check upload stability, competing traffic, encoder load, and the selected bitrate; reduce the target if needed.
- Frames drop at the source: inspect encoder and connection load, test a lower frame rate or quality, and compare wired with Wi-Fi if applicable.
- Castr looks stable, but viewers report buffering: compare affected viewers’ devices, browsers, and networks; test ABR or a lower source rendition.
- RTMP is unstable over a long-distance or unreliable path: test a closer available ingest server and consider Castr’s suggested SRT option.
- No pattern emerges: record the time, broad location, encoder settings, connection type, health-chart symptoms, and results of alternate-network checks before contacting Castr or the ISP.
The available product guidance does not establish that India as a whole, a named Indian ISP, or a particular Castr-to-YouTube route is responsible. Avoid assuming that a VPN, DNS change, router replacement, ISP upgrade, or a particular cable will fix the issue without a comparison that isolates the cause.
