First check the saved screenshot at 100% scale and note its pixel dimensions. A blurry-looking image can mean the website supplied a low-resolution photo, the capture contains too few pixels for its intended size, or the image is merely enlarged in a preview. The right fix depends on which of those is happening.
Diagnose what is making the screenshot look blurry
- Open the saved file in an image viewer and inspect it at 100% or the viewer’s native-pixel setting. Note its pixel width and height; don’t judge sharpness from a thumbnail or a preview scaled to fit a message pane.
- Compare text and interface edges with photos, logos, and other artwork. If the text is crisp but the images are soft, the site’s image assets are the likely problem. Apple’s archived Safari image-delivery guide explains that text and controls can render crisply while images blur when they lack enough image data: About Proper Image Delivery on the Web.
- If the whole screenshot is soft and its pixel dimensions are below the dimensions you need, the capture may have used too little device scale. Recapture at a higher scale while keeping the CSS viewport dimensions that produce the desired page layout.
- If the file is sharp at native size but looks soft only when enlarged, the screenshot may be fine; the enlarged preview is not adding detail.
These checks distinguish a website asset problem, a capture-resolution problem, and a display-size problem. Increasing the dimensions of a low-resolution file later cannot restore details that were not captured.
Capture a Retina-sized screenshot with shot-scraper
For a browser-generated screenshot, use a capture tool that supports a device scale factor. The shot-scraper manual documents --retina as setting the factor to 2, which doubles the output image’s width and height. Its example captures a 400 by 600 CSS-pixel viewport as an 800 by 1200-pixel image. Those figures describe the manual’s example, not a guarantee about every macOS screenshot mode. See the shot-scraper documentation.
Keep the CSS viewport at the size needed for the page’s layout; the higher device scale increases the output pixels without requiring you to make the page’s layout viewport twice as large. Check the resulting file’s dimensions and inspect it at native size.

If the page is yours and only its photos or graphics are soft, a higher-resolution capture may not solve the underlying issue: the site needs to provide sufficiently detailed image resources. Apple’s archived guidance discusses supplying higher-resolution assets and using vector graphics where appropriate. Its historical examples explain the principle, but should not be treated as the only current implementation: Serving Images Efficiently to Displays of Varying Pixel Density.
Use Safari page zoom for readability, not image enhancement
If your goal is to make a webpage easier to read on screen rather than produce a larger screenshot file, adjust Safari’s page zoom. For one website, use Page menu > Page Zoom. For broader site settings, use Safari > Settings > Websites > Page Zoom. Apple’s current support guide explains how to zoom in on webpages in Safari on Mac.

Page zoom changes how large webpage content appears to you. It does not create missing detail in a raster image or turn an already saved low-resolution screenshot into a sharper file.
Check responsive rendering when you maintain the site
Safari Responsive Design Mode lets developers vary the viewport and pixel ratio while inspecting a site. A preview can be scaled down when the selected viewport is larger than the Safari window, so do not rely on the preview alone to judge the final image. Inspect the actual captured output. See Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation.

The underlying distinction is between CSS layout pixels and device pixels. Apple’s archived guide describes four device pixels within each CSS pixel on Retina displays; this is an explanatory model from a 2013 document, not a promise about every current Safari or macOS implementation. The practical point remains: the capture scale controls the output pixel dimensions, while raster assets must themselves contain enough image data for the intended display density.

Troubleshooting
- Text is sharp but photos or logos are blurry: inspect the site’s source assets. If you maintain the site, provide an appropriately detailed raster image or use vector artwork when suitable; increasing screenshot scale cannot restore detail missing from the asset.
- The whole screenshot is soft and its saved dimensions are too small: recapture with a higher device scale factor. In shot-scraper, the documented
--retinaoption uses factor 2. - The screenshot is sharp at 100% but blurry when enlarged: check it at native size and avoid treating a scaled preview as evidence of a capture defect.
- The webpage is hard to read, but no image file is needed: use Safari page zoom rather than enlarging a saved screenshot.
- The Responsive Design Mode preview looks different from the exported image: the preview may be scaled to fit the Safari window. Judge the actual image output and its pixel dimensions.
