Start with the camera lens and your lighting, then compare the laptop’s built-in Camera preview with the video-call app. A clean lens and brighter, front-facing light often help; if only one app looks bad, check its camera and video settings before changing drivers or buying equipment.
Fix the simplest causes first
- Check the lens and anything covering it. Look for a privacy shutter, cover, dust, smudges, or visible damage. Gently wipe the lens with a soft microfiber cloth; Dell recommends this cleaning method, and Microsoft lists a dirty or damaged lens as a possible cause of blurry or low-quality video. Dell’s webcam image-quality guidance and Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting guidance cover these checks.
- Improve the light on your face. Turn toward an even light source and avoid sitting with a bright window or lamp behind you. Lenovo advises increasing room light when video looks grainy; Dell also recommends good lighting and avoiding backlight. Lenovo’s webcam troubleshooting guidance and Dell’s image-quality guidance explain these lighting checks.
- Compare the built-in Camera preview with the call app. Open the operating system’s Camera app and look at the preview under the same lighting. If it looks clear there but poor in one video-call app, investigate that app’s selected camera, effects, and available video-quality settings. Microsoft says that a camera working in one app but not another points to app settings.
- Check resolution and connection when the problem is call-only. Review the camera or conferencing app’s available resolution settings. If the preview is clear but a call looks blurry or choppy, end and restart the call and check the connection; Lenovo suggests reconnecting Wi-Fi or trying a wired network. Microsoft lists network issues and poor resolution as possible contributors to low-quality video.
- Escalate if several apps still show the same poor image. If the lens is clean, the light is good, and the image remains poor across apps, check support information for your exact laptop model and inspect the lens for damage. Hardware trouble is one possibility, but these checks alone do not confirm a fault or determine the repair.
Tell graininess from blur
If the picture looks grainy
Try more even light on your face, especially if the room is dim. Lenovo specifically recommends increasing room light for grainy video. Avoid backlighting: a bright window or lamp behind you can make the image look worse.
If the picture looks soft or out of focus
Check for a smudged lens or obstruction first, then compare the Camera preview with the call app and review available resolution settings. A lens that is physically damaged—or a camera with limitations specific to that laptop—may not be fixable through software settings.
Use the preview to locate the problem
The built-in Camera preview is a useful comparison, not a definitive hardware test. A clear preview alongside poor video in one call app suggests looking at that app’s camera selection, effects, quality settings, or connection. If the preview and multiple apps all look poor with a clean lens and good light, the laptop’s camera or its condition becomes a more plausible explanation. Camera controls and menu names vary by Windows version, laptop, and app, so consult instructions for the specific model and software.

When an accessory or service makes sense
A microfiber cloth is a practical option if the lens needs cleaning; it cannot correct poor lighting, app settings, or physical damage. An external USB webcam is an optional alternative if the built-in camera remains inadequate. Dell documents selecting among cameras in apps, but no particular external model is established as a best choice or guaranteed improvement. If shopping, compare published resolution and frame rate, performance in your lighting, autofocus or fixed-focus behavior, operating-system compatibility, privacy shutter, mounting, microphone needs, and return policy.
If you suspect physical damage, contact the laptop maker or an authorized repair provider for model-specific advice. The right diagnosis and any replacement part depend on the exact laptop; do not assume that a generic driver utility or update will fix a blurry image. Microsoft’s driver troubleshooting steps primarily address cameras that do not work, while its low-quality-video guidance emphasizes the lens, resolution, and network checks.
