Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If a Blu-ray disc won’t play, first check whether the problem follows the disc or stays with the player. Test another compatible disc, inspect and gently clean the suspect disc, then check format and region support before updating or resetting the player. These steps help narrow down the cause without risking damage or buying equipment unnecessarily.
Find out whether the disc or player is causing the problem
Try a different disc that the player is known to support. If that disc plays, the issue is more likely specific to the original disc; if several known-good discs fail, investigate the player. If possible, test the suspect disc in another compatible player, too. Sony recommends these checks to help distinguish a disc problem from a player problem: Sony’s Blu-ray playback troubleshooting guide.
- Only one disc fails: Inspect and clean it, then check its format and region.
- The suspect disc fails in multiple compatible players: It may be damaged, defective, or incorrectly authored.
- Several known-good discs fail in one player: Check the player’s supported formats, firmware, and reset instructions.
Inspect and gently clean the disc
Make sure the playback side faces the correct direction for your player. Check the playing surface for fingerprints, dust, stains, scratches, or cracks. If you see dirt or fingerprints, wipe the surface gently with a soft, dry cloth, moving carefully to avoid adding scratches. Sony and Panasonic recommend soft-cloth cleaning for surface dirt or smudges; it will not repair scratches, cracks, or authoring problems. See Sony’s cleaning guidance and Panasonic’s disc troubleshooting guidance.
Do not apply household liquids, sand, or polish the disc, or open the player as a general troubleshooting step. Follow the owner’s manual for your exact model.

Check disc format and region compatibility
A disc can be in good condition and still be incompatible with the player. Check the player’s manual or official support page for the media types it supports, and compare that information with the disc packaging or recording details.
Movie Blu-ray discs and region codes
Blu-ray movie discs may be marked Region A, B, or C, or ABC for region-free playback. The player and disc must be compatible for playback. Sony explains these codes and how to check them in its Blu-ray region-code guide. If the player reports an incompatible region even though you believe the codes match, check the exact model’s support information and available firmware; Sony’s model-specific region-error guidance may help.

- Enjoy Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD as well as DVD discs
- Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality
- Easy set-up with included HDMI cord
- Boot up in less than a second with super quick start mode
- Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
Ultra HD Blu-ray discs
Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are region-free, but they require a player that supports Ultra HD Blu-ray. A standard Blu-ray player may not be able to play them. Check the player’s specifications rather than relying on the disc’s region marking.
Recorded BD-R and BD-RE discs
Support for recordable BD-R and BD-RE discs depends on the player model and recording format. Some models may need a firmware update for specific formats; support for BDMV on certain players does not mean BDAV or every recorded disc is supported. Check the model-specific instructions in Sony’s BD-R and BD-RE support article.

Update and power-reset the player
If more than one compatible disc fails, look up the exact player model on the manufacturer’s official support site. Check whether firmware is available and follow that model’s installation instructions. Firmware can address some title or format compatibility issues, but it cannot repair a damaged disc or make unsupported formats playable. Sony provides examples in its BD-R/BD-RE guidance and region-error guidance.
To power-reset the player, remove the disc, turn the player off, unplug it, wait for the period specified in the model’s instructions, then reconnect it and retry. Sony includes a power-reset step in its playback troubleshooting guidance. Reset procedures can vary by model, so use the manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming one wait time or button sequence applies to every player.

Know when to stop troubleshooting
If the suspect disc still fails in multiple compatible players after inspection, cleaning, and compatibility checks, the disc may be defective. If several known-good discs still fail in one player after an appropriate update and power reset, contact the manufacturer or authorized service provider. Sony’s general troubleshooting guide and model-specific disc-reading guidance describe when further support may be needed.
Do not assume a lens-cleaning disc is a safe universal fix. Sony warns for the player family covered by its guidance: “Do not use cleaning discs or disc/lens cleaners (including wet or spray types). These may cause the apparatus to malfunction.” That warning is model-scoped; for another brand or model, follow its owner’s manual. See Sony’s troubleshooting article.
